i was born in 1952 and also grew up in jamaca, queens. there was a great feeling back then,no gangsta rap,no drive bys, just good music and partys in basement.. good memorys.thx 4 the posting.
Chimmin' in...Born in 1954 and remember listening to this fantastic song on WDAS in Philly with the fabulous dj, Georgie Woods...Wow...we should write our stories...The Best to the babies born in the 50's.
IT NICE TO READ ABOUT THE EAST COAST STORY I WAS BORN IN 63 IN LOS ANGELES CA THE EASTSIDE , THE MUSIC FROM PITT PHILLY NY CHICAGO & THE REST OF EAST COAST HAD THE GREATEST SOUNDS , WE IN THE WEST COAST DIG THE SOUND FROM THE MID 60'S MY OLDER BRO SIS WERE HIT PATTI DREW , THE INTRUDERS THE FOUR TOP TEMPS BILLY STEWART.
This is on of my favorites .I love this song. I am glad I was able to find it on you tube. I grew up in Brooklyn. NY in the sumner projects. We use to party in with the blue lights in the basements, Back then we had good house partys. We partied in the Marcy , Sumner, Bushwick and Fortgreene progects etc. For those who still have it going on and live in New York n the metropolitan areas . come to Roseland Rythm Review with Felix Hernandez n Manhattan for an old school party u will love it
George "Smitty" Smith had a unique voice and was the original founder and Lead singer of the Manhattans. He passed away on December 16,1970. Every now and then the Wolfman would play the Manhattans songs. The groups of the 60's, 70's and some of the 80's are all gone; just a memory of what Music and real talent use to be; it will be missed dearly by me!!!
This is the Manhattans at their finest! When Smitty left us, the group just wasn't the same.
The Manhattans were right up there with the 60s O'Jays, 60s Intruders, Jive Five, The Exsavyons, The Esquires, The Whispers, and how can I forget The Four Mints!
Suddenly it's 1966 and I'm cruising Allegheny boulevard in my 59 Galaxy convertible.
Pittsburgh was such a hip place for white kids to listen to soul music. Porky, Hal Brown, Sir Walter, bobby Bennett etc. Thanks fellas for making my early years memorable
@13NJJACK SHOUT OUTS TO ALL U REAL MUSIC FANS!!!! THIS SONG IS CLASSIC !! Way B4 my time but my parents listen to these jams and I do too!! Luv NEO SOUL But nothing like oldies!!
This song was introduced to me by a buddy in 1966, I became a fan of the Manhattans; I saw them perform it @ the Uptown theater in Philly that same year. And they were very nattily attired, were the first group, to where white gloves as part of their act, they put on an impressive show then, as far as I know still do today. Original member Blue Lovette is a true RnB ledgen. Thanks for sharing.
Oh man this brings back some really great times, Roosevelt park (nassau County,NY.) summers sitting in the park listening to "Sage" play music..man that Brother could spin hours and hours non-stop without a repeat..people sittin' tappin' their feet some dancin' to an old jam..kids enjoying it ..trouble-free..stress-free..the place to be..and all free..wow! This is music..makes people wanna sing! vholiness
Sure wish the Manhattans would reach way back and include this golden oldie in their current shows. They would, of course, have to remove the "D" word from the lyrics. Singing a song with the "D" word in the lyrics is not wise since we know so much more now about the power of the spoken (or sung) word.
I heard this song for the first time and the last time ,until tonight back in the 70s when the Manhattens appeared live in Buffalo. By that time Gerald Alston was singing lead and it was a little different
rendition. It made a great impression on me then and still does. Thank you utube
NYC, Philly, and Pittsburgh continued to love doo wopish records long after they had become passe everywhere else. The Manhattans became major stars in the early 70's.
Me? I was born in 1950 in Hip City (NYC) South Jamaica. To be a shy black kid among a sea of fast talking smooth walking dudes, who had strong "raps" and knew how to pull the ladies, was a sorry state to be in at the time. I wanted a girlfriend so bad. I played this cut endlessly. Today, with 4 grown kids and two grands, I have since made up for lost time. This ballad is still in my collection.
I was born in 1952, I'm white, grew up in a black area of Yeadon, PA (outside Philly). Used to listen to this on WHAT AM and own the 45 (somewhere now in storage). It's one of the best songs ever (up there with The Intruders' "United" or The Ethics' "Think About Tomorrow."
@billchew450: Yeah, I lived about two-and-a-half blocks from the Yeadon movies. In the late 50's and early 60's, we could see a double feature on Saturday afternoons for 25 cents! We moved out in 1968. I used to walk Baltmore Pike, either to go to the Bazaar, or the opposite way into Center City. As it is now, I live in Center City. About the only time I glimpse Yeadon now is from the R-3 Media-Elwyn local, through the Fernwood-Yeadon train station.
@adopaz THE BAZAAR!!!!!!!! i am from West Philly, from a different generation, but I loved that spot you mentioned. Ah, the smell of cinnamon rolls as soon as I walked in the Bazaar! I remember this song from when Harvey Holiday was on WDAS on Sunday nights with the oldies, which I use to love to listen to and check the older ones reminiscing.
@adopaz I was born in West Philly in 52 and went to the Nile swim club in Yeadon. This was a Philly Hit. one of the cool things is that there is NO BASS ! Just a Tuba for the bass guitar part. The arranger lives in Richmond ,Va. Bad tune....
Great post, I identify with you, although I'm black it was the best of times and also the worst of times for me!!! You also grow up with Jimmy Bishop and Georgie Woods the guy with the goods and let's not forget about the 1st super cool white dude; the Geator with the heater Jerry Blavat and that dude Butter-ball!!
Of all the great sides George Smith and this group from Jersey City recorded for Joe Evan's Carnival label out of Newark, NJ during the '60's, I think this is their finest one. Outstanding!
glad you like this, one of pittsburgh's favorites, and mine. and i might say it's pretty hard to be the first to post anything, there are so many great youtubers.

How can you perfect perfection?
Slim Smith & The Uniques DID this
