  • hey i setup the box and everything but i don't get a picture could you tell me what i did wrong

  • Where did you buy that Neo Myth? I can't find it anywhere.

  • Hey, great vids. I'm kind of at a crossroads though. I want to do NES, SNES, and GENESIS in RGB Component using your methods, but I don't know if I should get a LCD or a CRT. From this video LCD looks amazing. As an overall for the aforementioned 3 consoles, what should I do?

  • @wolfenbreed It looks great on LCD, but I prefer scanlines on a CRT. I bought my 26 inch Sony Trinitron WEGA on Craigslist for 100 dollars.

  • @phonedork Thanks for your help man. I've finally gotten SCART cables for NES GENESIS and SNES, but I can't seem to find the SCART Switcher you have for delivery to the US. How in the world did you get yours?!

  • Comment removed

  • @wolfenbreed While the NES has a scart cable, it only pulls composite out. NES does not have a RGB signal to convert. Unless you modified a NES with the arcade version. Just remember that scart does not mean it has RGB. A scart cable is just a connection point. One of my videos you can clearly see what type of splitter I am using. Just make sure you get a good one. Some splitters bleed 5VDC from one system to another. The Lynsay scart splitter is horrible!

  • I own teh Japanese version of Alien Soldier. Awesome signal man. Your signal destroys my s-video shit.

  • Looks fucking amazing dude!! thanks for share this. Can you upload someday a gameplay of Virtua Racing, Doom or Virtua Fighter?? That would be great :D

  • cool stuff... i like the cart and the game alien soldier.... so an easy way to put it, av to HDMI is not a better resolution than scart to rgb... thx for the info... oh and whats the name of that cartridge and can it change sega cd bios???

  • I have a question. I want to buy a converter box that converts scart to component, for my sega saturn. I noticed it only converts video, and not audio. Do you have a suggestion of how to get audio?

  • What CRT did you test this on and was it an HD CRT with Component?

I tried emulating NES on my analog TV via S-Video and a Scan Converter and it sucks compared to the to the front loader's Composite out, the scan lines look better on a real NES.

However, this setup is a good alternative to to Arcade Emulation on a Computer Monitor, I can see the flicker scanline effect in MAME fine. But I don't have arcadeVGA watch?v=JjKLq-LMgjM

What's important to me is color/pixel accuracy and scanlines.

  • What about AV composite into a scart adaptor, that into a scart switch box with rgb out?

  • Hey man. Another classic video!

I am really thinking about doing this for as many of my classic consoles as possible, but wanted to make sure on a couple things first before buying.

    1. Is the component still the best option (over HDMI)? My TV has 5 HDMI's and only 1 component (which is being used by my Xbox).

    2. Does the 480i (interlacing) introduce any weird artifacting or glimmering visual problems?

    3. Do the SCART switchers noticeably degrade the picture quality?

    Thanks!

  • @videogameobsession If I were you I would do component to keep the signal analog for closest resolution. If you have no alternative then do HDMI. I said it was a good option just not the best. But make sure you are in full screen and not wide. The scart switcher did not degrade my signal. I compared with and without the splitter. To be honest the best picture I have obtained on my SuperNEs, Genesis, Saturn, and Neogeo was to go component into a CRT television.

  • @phonedork Thanks for the reply. I will try and get a component version.

Do you have any suggestions on the best place to buy this stuff from? I saw a place that sells the cables pretty cheap (in the UK), but the SCART to component adapter is over $100 USD. There are some cheap no name brands that look just like the one you have, but I'm not sure if they would perform the same.

I agree with the CRT, but we just don't have room for 2 large TV's anymore so I need to make the 52" LCD work out.

  • @phonedork: where's your video showing your crt results? with all the money you blew on importing scart supplies you could have went the better route and bought a multi-sync crt. using a 27 inch arcade monitor now.. and there's no comparison to your flat pictures. you have no pixel glow, scanlines, or pixel detail (not talking about your blocky images.. you should be able to see individual pixel dots). those 3 combined give a image that has more depth to it, and not be flat painted

  • @Paperclown LOL! I did not spend that much money guy. Anyways when I recorded this years ago I had a Nikon D5000 that recorded in auto mode. It gave shitty results. But now that I have bumped up to the Nikon D7000 I can shoot my CRT results in full manual. Aperture 8, ISO 500, Shutter Speed 60 to keep from recording on a CRT with flickering... so on. I do like the SGL 3000 for high def TVs! But this setup on my Sony Trinitron gives better results in my opinion.

  • @phonedork I may have missed it, but what SCART selector is that?

  • NES does have RGB, but you have to solder it.

  • guys i need your help,im trying to find a scart to component adapter with the sound rca as well, but they are very difficult to come by,i found one online but the rep said it only works on pal tvs because of of the whole 50hz thing,i think it should work because my pc engine duo r puts out a 60 hz signal into the adapter so there for it should work on american tvs,i just dont want to buy a scart splitter just to get sound, tje adaptors are already expensive enough

  • I do own an actual copy of the awesome alien soldier, JPN version

  • Got the last of my parts coming in the mail. So in a week or two I'm hoping to enjoy some component upscaling!

  • Incredible quality.

  • Alien Soldier looks amazing. I was really surprised by Donald Duck (world of illusion?) s-video vs. component. I had my Genesis modded for component, then I got a component-->VGA converter. Too much conversion of the signal going on, but I only have a Dell monitor with s-vid and VGA inputs. Strangely, the s-video produces "jail" vertical bars.

  • hey i just wanna say, thanks to your videos i can get the best quality out of my genesis games!

  • Cool video.I was thinking of getting doing this but ive decided to just stick to playing roms off my laptop hooked up to my tv via hdmi.I use Xbox 360 controllers and well its not the same as playing with real hardware its still pretty fun.Any chance of doing a video on that Neo Myth MD cart you got there?

  • You are my new hero

  • ALIEN SOLDIER too very difficult. But cool wepons.

  • @doujindance Actually as I continued to play I got better. I almost beat the game! It just takes a while to get use to the weapon setup. AWESOME GAME!!!!

  • well, in the end: wrong TV type... Genesis games were made to be played on 4:3 CRT obviously; seems like more and more people simply ignore this fact and throw the poor systems onto these widescreen nonsences instead of getting some good arcade CRT monitor and hook them straight with RGB signals to get genuine 15 kHz signal

  • wow, thats a expensive setup, those scalers go for $50

  • Here is a CSY-2100

    retrogamingcables.co.uk/online-shop/scart-rgb-to-component-converter-csy-2100

We also supply RGB Scart cables with additional RCA connectors to be used injunction with the CSY-2100.

  • @retrogamingcables Cool! Alot of people cannot seem to find the CSY 2100.

  • CVS287 is better than the CSY-2100 from what i here.

  • @MrBasketball2003 Cool! Maybe people should start looking for that version since the CSY 2100 is so hard to find. I only talked about the CSY 2100 because its the only one I ever tested. I did not want to say something else would work without checking it out for sure. But if you tested this then its all good!

  • @MrBasketball2003 After you told me this I ordered one for my NeoGeo. It looks great on the CRT but on a flats screen LCD I have problems with the edges being distorted. I am thinking its my scart cable. I am going to order another scart cable and try again. Then I am doing another video on the Neogeo using this method except with the CVS287.

  • WAIT. That device you are using as an intermediary between the Genesis and the CSY2100 must be upscaling. There is no way your LCD HDTV can display 240p component output from the CSY2100 without upscaling! Everyone needs to see this thread..damn URL's dont work. It's at sega-16

  • i have a snes PAL and from what i've read it outputs RGB throught thr PAL scart cable is that correct ?? i wanted to replicate your setup but i have one question how doyou get audio to your TV ?? with my snes i will use the scart cable to the CSY2100

and then use the component cables to my plasma but i dont see any options to get the audio how do i do that ? the only option i can think of is to get a scart RGB converter to hdmi so that will take the video and audio and output it to HDMI ??

  • @africanmarty I have two videos referring to the scart cable for Pal and using a HDMI setup instead of mine. Also if you need a splitter like the one I have to hook up 3 systems at to this setup with stereo out. The SNES PAL RGB scart requires resistors. Make sure you get the one designed for Pal SNES. I thought you guys in the Pal universe get to use straight scart ready Tvs?? That would be best! However I would imagine not too many TVs in europe would have a dedicated scart input.

  • @phonedork - thanks for the quick reply. i rechecked your videos and it seems you have the audio out from your SCART splitter device. i have found a scart RGB for 'PAL' snes that also has red/white RCA for audio in the one cable ! thankyou for the advice. just one question do you think all RGB to HDMI converter boxes will make the picture shit compared to going through SCART RGB to component. or do you think its purley a SCART RGB to HDMI box case by case bases.. regards Marty.

  • @africanmarty RGB to HDMI is still a good option. JUst not as good as going from RGB to Component RGB at its native analog resolution. No matter what HDMI device you get.... You are basically doing the same thing. Up converting from lower resolution to higher resolution as well as changing from native analog signal to a simulated digital signal that the SNES never had.

  • Do you have to get a JP RGB Scart cable for a NTSC Saturn? Or can I just get a EU RGB Scart cable for the Saturn?

  • so this is pretty much THE BEST VIDEO LOOK i can get from my super nintendo and sega genesis?

  • @SNESosT Thats correct!

  • Can you get stereo sound doing this with your model 2 or can you only do that with a model 1?

  • @Bloodthr0e

the genesis 2 already outputs stereo sound

  • This is something I'd like to consider "The Ultimate Work Around," Thank you for uploading phonedork :), I've heard around youtube that you can modify your sega genesis for component, but this takes the cake :P.

I'm going to defiantly reference to this when I do consider this for my genesis :3.

  • Nice, but how you have sound? on a megadrive/genesis 1 you can plug the headphones out to a amplifier/speakers, but on the model 2 you can't

  • Comment removed

  • What happens with things that are dithered though? Dithering was something used quite frequently on the Genesis to get what appeared to be more colors and transparency effects. Do those effects still blend like they were intended too? That's the only real issue I'd have with something like this.

  • Yes this converter works awesome. I have it for my Saturn, JVC X'eye, Duo-R and Dreamcast.

Anybody who says S-video is better than this is a retard.

  • Phonedork, what brand of power adapter are you using for the CSY-2100?

  • Class 2 Transformer

    Model # RH41-0750500DU

    INPUT : 120V AC 60HZ

    OUTPUT : 7.5 VDC 500 mA

    Go to Radio Shack!

  • @phonedork What letter adataplug did you get?

  • I use this for my genesis and snes. I think I learned about this from a forum post you made...thanks!!

  • No problem!

  • nice video!! by the way where can i get the cartridge that i can put more than one game???

  • Thanks for the info phonedork. But one happened to "Part 1" ? I gonna try this. By the way what was the name of the cartridge where you record multiple-games on one?

  • I renamed it so it would be easier to find. Just go to my videos. The name of the cartridge is called NEO MYTH. I am going to review that soon as well as the tototek device. Both of these devices store games.

  • this video rocks! general chaos music just AWESOME!!! thanks for making this.

  • No problem! Trying to help the community! SNES looks great in RGB. I did a comparison between s-video on the SNES VS RGB as well! 32X looks great also!

  • wow, it looks like the genesis had a really advanced cpu. It was processing games at that quality the whole time, you just never say it because of the default composite. I guess component shows it to you the way it was meant to be seen.

  • is component video better than rgb scart video?? where can I buy an adapter to convert it??

thank you. is it also possible on saturn?

  • No its not better then RGB scart video. It outputs exactly the same. I found mine on ebay.

  • Probably the best you can get is sega scart cable and a RGB monitor. The only problem is that you cannot get a RGB monitor bigger then 13 inches.

  • so since I live in europe, best thing for me is to just get an rgb scart for genesis right?? I use rgb on saturn too on my 42 inch full hdtv and it looks great too.

  • " look at my donald , punk bitch " lol made me spit when i laughed. thanks so much . ive got a 52 1080p samsung that always gets mad at me when i go retro and use some crap signal for her. but now i can play guilt free. keep up the good work. oh and get cracking on that snes signal. laters bro

  • I made a video on SNES rgb to component.

  • You cannot possibly get 720p. The max resolution on the sega genesis is 480i (max resolution of 320 x 224 pixels). This can only be obtained from the RGB connection. Yea there is a jrok device that you can mod within the sega genesis that does this same thing I am doing without all the cables. However, not everybody knows how to mod and you cannot hook a 32x with it.

  • I see this. Can you post your video clarity? My question is if the sega genesis outputs 480I and the HDMI converter outputs 720P.... Does it just attempt to amplify the 480I analog signal to a 720P digital? Its would seem like a photo taken at 640x480 and upscaling it to like 3000 x 3000 with photoshop which would make the picture bigger. But the resolution would not be better. But if you got video proof then yup that might be better.

  • The 32X works with just one scart! IT LOOKS GREAT AS WELL! The scart cable goes to the 32X AV OUT, then the 32X cable comes from the genesis port to the 32X AV IN and I have gotten a 480I signal! Its great! So if you did a s-video mod, then you would not get anything better then a composite AV signal from your 32X. No way to hook the 32X to the genesis if the genesis is using a s-video mod. My way works!

  • Thanks for this. It does look awesome, nice and clear and colorful. I do have the model 1, but if I were to get the 32x, I'm guessing that uses the model 2's AV port. So I may have to get two SCART cables. Either way, I hope this works just as good for me as it does for you. First I find that transcoder.

  • Oh yea... I see what your saying. You would need a model 2 scart if you use a 32x.
