Memorization is tricky. I've noticed that very difficult pieces where I have to look a lot at my hands to get things right at first, will be easier to memorize because I don't look at the sheet all the time. I think if you practice without looking at it, it'll go faster.
im not specialist.... i dont know what pianist can do in interpretation what he cant... his "Samuel Goldenberg...." is perfect.... little chaotic but with strong right hand. This is perfection for me. But try compere his catle (byldo) to Piotr Paleczny interpretation.... and his Promanade ( Kissin) is to fast. I cant find Piotr Paleczny interpretation on yt but will try to post it here....
but so anyway... Kissin "samuel..." is a masterpice....
Evgeny Kissin is an excellent pianist not only technically but also he expresses feelings and passion that makes a performer perfect. This is the best performance I heard of this famous musical piece. Thanks Matty for putting it up.
Everything is good, but one thing I want to criticize is the mistake of one who posted this video....The song had been cut, so this second video contains just a few seconds of the last song which was contained in the first video. I felt a bit of absurdity from that while I was hearing the first one.
Just imagine. You was listening to the video without making any sound, and then, the video - silent! Can you imagine what did I feel?
But I really thank you for sharing this video, mattib2001uk.
Exactly, Rimskij-Korsakov changed some "error" (Mousorskij was too great to be understood by 1800's musicians) and Ravel made transcription for orchestra.
But, for my opinion, original piano version is absolutely the best. Astonish.

memorize it as you learn it. memorize it measure by measure. don't start another measure untill you have finished the 1st measure then add the next and keep going and use the metranome as you are memorizing it
In that case you can always forget what you have to play while being stressed. I don't recommend such a way of practise. Memorizing is as important as working on nice sound and the whole intepretation.
Not sure about other people, but after playing a piece for a while, I'm too impatient to grab the music, or maybe the music stand is in the other room (violinist), so I just play till I get stuck.
The thing I've found amazing when learning this piece, is that it's like reading a work of literature, where every section tells a story giving more of an insight into the composers vision. It's not like any other piece I've seen.
this is one of my favorite classical pieces of all time. Mussorgsky was not only a rebel in the musical scene at the time, but he was a genius at conveying emotion through this piece!

In ballet of the unhatched chicks, the outer sections are played too fast, so when he plays the middle bit, it sounds too slow. EVEN TEMPO KISSIN - STOP SHOWING OFF
hmm... i really appreciate the symphonic orchestrations a lot more. it just seems to be much grander when done with a full symphony. not that his playing isn't amazing at all. apples and oranges.
I'm really "underwhelmed" by your cocky opinions, Virtuoso80 (Virtuoso my ass).
Just came from reading your comment on the video 3 of this performance. I'm so sorry you feel distaste with Mozart... You should switch to other music than classical then.
I used to have this on cassette and it was very good, but this performance leaves that one standing. Truly astonishing, there's no other word to describe this.
Oh, God, Kissin is Samuel Goldenberg and I´m Schmuyle, I feel myself like that — the poor Jew, but now, at seeing him, a bit richer. Just that. Thank you for post it.
I guess many of those who read this, won't understand it's geniallity, but the picture Samuel Goldenberg and Schmuyle is about a rich guy and a poor one!
the movement is in A-B-A format and the opening A section utilizes the harmonic minor scale with the tritone, which is actually a traditional Jewish scale. its still questionable whether or not the movement was written pejoratively (Mussorgsky was an anti-Semite)
They aren't the Rich Jew and the Poor one . It's just said to be so , but it isn't true . One is asking for advice , and the other is the wise one , or a rabbi . More likely , a rabbi .

All I know is that The Tuileries is a hang of a lot harder than it sounds, but Kissin makes it look like a Grade 7 piece.

And Ravel made the transcription for orchetsra.

In the thousands hours of rehearsal you will memorize it.
You should not be working on how to memorize, you should be polishing and with the practice it will happen.
