  • The Lion King, didnt make the list? wth? :(

  • that girl is sooo hot! If she ever switched teams, get her to call me!

  • yeah grave of the fireflies and dancer in the dark share #1 place as the saddest movies ever, to me

  • That guy is handsome..!

  • It's simple, we live and we die, she had the guts to take it

  • damn

    just show it

    damn

  • what the helli?

    just show it

    damn

  • How is this a "damsel in distress" scenario? That makes no sense.

  • There were many films not included, they said is their opinion, any way, I will like to ad "INNOCENT VOICES", you should watch it.

  • I really cried during this movie.

  • is that...mister Pink behind them? GO Steve Buscemi

  • Yeah, all those people who voted for Requiem clearly have not seen The Fountain...

sounds like "My Life" is about a similar subject. Have not seen "Precious", too depressing for me. All of Lars Von Trier's other films are depressing films about women with a martyr complex. He's Scandinavian...

  • What is fando y lis about? / directed by? thanks...

  • "The Fountain" by Aronofsky, far more gut-wrenching than Requiem. Especially with Clint Mansell's music (same composer) and especially for anyone who's ever lost a family member to disease, or contemplated the inevitability of death :( This film and the Fountain are side by side on my list... the Notebook is pretty sad. I haven't seen Grave of the Fireflies but Watership Down is traumatically sad.

  • can't imagine such a list without "Requiem for a Dream" and "Life is Beautiful".

  • Indeed, this was a blistering and haunting dreamscape. I loved this, but will never see it again in full.

  • I love Bjork and I have found a whole new respect for as an artist. No one told me about this movie before I rented it from my local library. i notice that bjork was in it and I thought to myself, "this should be good" considering I love musicals. OMG, I cried my eyes out and couldn't seem to get myself together for about an hour even after watching this tender and wonderful movie. Its AWESOME.

  • @dancersrgreat I don't think I've come across a film like this before, it's not entertainment, it's not easy to watch, but it leaves you totally drained and stunned like no other film. Makes you realise that 99% of films are nothing more than eye candy.

  • terrible movie, fucking nerds.

  • Horrible review.

  • You want "gut-wrenching"? Number one should be "Lilya 4-ever". If you have a warm bed tonight and someone in your life who cares whether you live or die... you'll never take it for granted after seeing this film.

    "Lilya 4-ever".

  • @CityofDreadfulDelite Bjork is an artist, in every sense of the word

  • Where's Requiem for a Dream?

  • i was just gonna say the same thing, haha...

also fando y lis is amazingly miserable. check it out if you've never seen it...

  • I've seen a lot of very sad movies... Dancer in the dark is one I've held to be the saddest effing thing I've ever seen. However, Precious is on par with it. It's a relatively new movie though so I can understand why it's not in your list.

  • Watch the guy's bracelet...looks like a signature QAF bracelet.

  • No1 for me is definitelly Grave of the Fireflies from 1988 :) who didn´t see it than go for it it´s anime btw :) I bet you gona cry.

  • I cried at Grave of the Fireflies and I cried at this movie. Only 2 movies I cry at!

  • Surprised! Not so much by the ending(if you've seen Hellraiser, and Saw movies) but by the 5 star Performance of Bjork1 I don't own a single album of hers, like alot of her music I've heard, but,Just going by this performance It was the best only I think Topped or at least equalled by the late "Heath Ledger" in the "Dark Knight"

  • Yeah it's not about being surprised. The saw movies and hellraiser and horror movies in general are not sad. By gut wrenching they're saying terribly sad..

  • ugh i always start balling at the end of this movie. every time!

  • you two are fucking horiffic, just awful

  • So few people have seen "My Life" starring Michael Keaton and Nicole Kidman. It is probably the saddest movie ever in the history of anything, especially when you're like me and have had someone very close to you die from cancer. I really encourage everyone to watch it.

  • Hey, what about Diving Bell and the Butterfly?

  • ive never cried so much in a movie as i did in dancer in the dark; its too sad that bjork hates acting, she's really expressive and that makes it easier for her. i have goosebumps everytime i think about the ending of the movie. :´(

E.T. sucks, i havent seen it years, i havent actually REALLY seen it through the end, its boring and i never got it haha

  • How can they miss out Marley and me? Everybody I know has cried like a big wuss at the end of that, including me.

Crouching tiger has a terribly tragic ending too, much more so than Titanic (how did that get on the list?)

  • Is marley and me that movie with owen wilson and jennifer anistin? Have you seen dancer in the dark? By the end of the movie you'll probably decide you never want to see it again. It's a good movie, but it's so painful to watch.

  • You want gut wrenching? watch the news.

  • @duendecilla999

    WELL SAID!!!

  • @duendecilla999 The news is repetitive, and boring.

  • Try watching 'REQUIEM FOR A DREAM'

  • Dude, I was thinking the same thing.

  • Second that!! Try watching Requiem for a dream!!

  • my top 5 would be: la vita é bella, nobody knows, the green mile, dancer in the dark, grave of the fireflies.

  • I've definitely gotta agree with Nobody Knows. Saddest movie I've ever seen.

  • uh... all of your picks are recent... if a movie was made in the past does it not count?

Try watching Wild Strawberries by Bergman

  • absolutely amazing.

one of the best films ever ever made

  • Dancer in the Dark is not as soul crushingly depressing as Grave of the Fireflies (which was based on one survivor's account during the war), but it's still quite good. You ought to see it, it will likely make you reevaluate this list. It's a shame Bjork never appeared in any other films, she has quite a natural talent for acting.

  • Grave of the Fireflies dose not surpass Dancer in the Dark in depressingness at least not by alot. i would say its equally Sad Tho, i had to stop watching Grave of the ff about 30 min. in because i was BALLING!!!!!! and im not too fond of being depressed. It should be tied for no. 1.

  • Whether one finds one sadder than the other is subjective, but I have a tough time watching Grave because children are involved. Bjork as great as she was with the material she was given, her character made absolutely bizarre decisions that just made me shake my head throughout the film. When Dancer was over, I felt disoriented, but when Grave was over, I felt like someone had beaten me and sucked my soul out.

  • Also, I'm 100 percent certain that the film "The Girl Next Door" (based on the Jack Ketchum novel and NOT the comedy) ought to receive the top spot on this list forever due to the extremely terrible circumstances depicted in gut wrenching detail. I'm seen many a film, but I just don't have the heart to watch this one.

  • hey i was wondering which Grave of the Fireflies you were talking about. i found out about it because of your comments and i notice there is the animated and live action version. i'm more interested in the animated one, but is that the one you are referring to?

  • I am referring to the animated film directed by Isao Takahata. I actually own the film on DVD, and in the 7 years or so that I have owned it, I have watched it exactly ONE time. It's not because i don't want to watch it, but because it is a thoroughly harrowing experience to sit there and let the film crush your hopes. And after the film is over, you realize that some child, somewhere, may be experiencing what transpired on screen at this very moment. That's what makes it so excruciating.

  • No, I definitely understand, I just finished watching it on youtube. Though I would have rather watched the dvd, it was still so tragic. it's like, there is no winner when there is war. thank you for bringing this film up.

i would like to see more heart wrenching films because so far, dancer in he dark was the only film that made me ball so much, i RARELY cry during movies.

  • True i gotta agree.

I feel they are both very good films but there is a sense that in Dancer of the dark some of the depression is forced over silly decisions and over innocence.

I felt Bjork portrayed her character wonderfully plus it was her first time acting.

  • I don't mean to sound angry.....but her first acting job was on an Icelandic film called The Juniper Tree when she was much younger...ANYway...

  • Lol my bad to not know everything about Bjork.

You make it sound like im attacking her or something.

I read various times this was her first time acting and i assumed it correct.

  • i dont think it takes place in the 60's

  • It does, '64.

  • i'ts true

    incredible
