And I think everyone here is missing the point... it's a bloody movie. The Vikings in it are heavily stylized so they look scary: that should be immediately obvious. This is a dark, gritty, violent action movie - not a history channel special on North America. Don't look for realism in it.

This is a good movie, but a bad lection of history. The vikings are clearly taken from warhammer fantasty battle chaos marauders. Vikings don't resembel those allmost at all.

It's actually, what I can hear, a mixture of Icelandic and Norwegian :/ I can hear some speak in Icelandic, some I think in Norwegian. So since Icelandic is essentially Old Norse, it's no wonder they used it.
