  • I will be seeing Fintan again very soon and will give your regards. Be sure of that.

  • The Stanley name is just a coincidence. No connection.

  • to be honest it was my great grandad david michie that wrote this music and can be proved

  • Thanks for the info

  • @itsinthetrees1 Check out Kerr's Merry Melodies from 1875,,,,,,Bluebell polka is in there !!!!

It was composed before Jimmy Shand was born !!

  • just in case anyone is interested Fintan Stanley is home on Oct 4th in Ireland to play a few dates. He might even play the bluebell for a few. Four dates in all I think.

  • Spoke with my dear frlend Fintan on Wed and Thurs last and he DID NOT write the Bluebell polka. Just coinsidence that it's written by an F Stanley. No connection to Fintan

  • Well, what can I say ? I must try & find out WHO the composer was / is.

Possibly the tune is older than one would imagine

  • @hennyjess No where has it ever been said that Fintan Stanley wrote the Bluebell polka.....It was written by Florence Stanley IF you see Fintan again please give him my regards

  • by the way Stanley never mentions to anyone that he wrote this. Not in his nature!!

But the scottish cut makes it a lovely tune.

  • Try Tom Alexander's version of this. Another long ago friend of mine . He plays a lovely version of it too but lively. Fintan and O'Brien are both friends of mine 'though sadly we no longer have O'Brien but had many a good session in Ireland listening to Tom!!

Stanley never boasts that he composed this only has praise for Jimmy Shand.

  • well he wrote a nice bluebell polka if not the book!! and a few other bits and pieces but the bluebell was always associated with Jimmy Shand. Stanley never took the credit! Could compose wonderfully but rarely did I hear him play it. prefers other scottish pieces like waltzs. And the Dark Island

  • Fintan Stanley does indeed play it at that pace but...he never plays it the same way twice nor any other piece. That's' what make him individual.

  • I'm the same I never play anything the same way twice either as I play most of my tunes by ear

  • @hennyjess in your dreams woman FS wouldn't be able to keep up at that pace, he'd be leaving out notes here and there if he tried, I remember hearing FS play the Coulin once and he absolutely murdered it, I thought it would never be over, but the music here is nice no comparrison at all to FS's rubbish, its hard to believe FS composed it, but then its the way its played too!

  • Aye well, I ALWAYS gave the credit to him as I knew from a young age Shand did not compose this tune !

  • Very nice indeed. Love it! Thank you!

  • Thanks very much for the comment

  • Enjoyed that ...well done.

  • Thanks Benny

  • I've heard Finton Stanley the composer playing this one and this is the tempo he played it at too. Love it Graham, great chord runs, and changes of key WOW !

  • I mind hearing it on Irish radio too Maggie & that's when I started playing it at his tempo as well.

  • Absolutely perfect. I love the lively tempo and the chords you've done. Any chance of the patchwork polka please ?

    June xxxxxx

  • I was wondering when you'd comment on this one June. LOL LOL

    Yep, patchwork polka's no problem

  • It's one of the first I learnt to play.

  • I was used to hearing my parents playing this one. I love the way you change keys on it. Marvellous arrangement & playing.

  • Thanks Paola, it's a very very popular tune

  • This video is very beautiful: the pictures fit perfectly with Spring that's coming, and the music is nice!!!
