Despite the whole cheese, men's crotch and piss thing you've totally sold me on Black Orchid (or should I say BO) b/c I still want to try this!
I've only tried TF's Jasmine Rouge and White Suede so far but both have really hit the spot. After seeing your other reviews re Ford's scents I can't wait to try out more esp. this one.
Why oh why did they have to discontinue BO VdF though? VdF sounded right up my tuberose-loving alley. :(

@SuddenSparkles Yes, it's really different to Voile de Fleur which is a tuberose affair. You'll have to take your "men's crotch" concerns to Tom Ford - that's what he's reported to have requested in creative directing Black Orchid. Mercifully, that part's not coming through for you!
i've been using for over a year now, and i loved it in the beginning. it's one of those scents that you kinda get bored of after a while because maybe it's very intense. I recommend having 2 or 3 other colognes to switch time to time.
I absolutely adore Black Orchid. To me, it's intoxicating and sensual. Oddly enough, to my nose, it smells like a combination of baby powder, sweet root beer and patchouli...in a good way! Luckily for me, I don't get the piss note :-P Must be a difference of "skin chemistry" haha.
@KatiePuckrikSmells hoping you can clarify something for me... Is there a difference between black orchid and black orchid voile de fleur? Or is it just how it's marketed in different parts of the world? Hope you have answers! Love the vidz. Xo
@pvalex2004 I do have answers! They are 2 completely different perfumes, and sadly, Voile de Fleur is discontinued (though it can still be found online). VdF is a beautiful, feminine gardenia perfume, softer than Fracas, but leaning in that direction.

I think Tom Ford's Private Blend line has some real standouts, but I feel it has a crazy-expensive pricepoint that seems unjustified, other than to signal "this is luxury, people!" It does seem to take cues on some of its more ambitious fragrances from Lutens. To me, the Lutens line feels more deluxe & unique.
Guerlain is such a different animal to Tom Ford Private Blends - no comparison. Guerlain's line contains the very history of modern perfume with Jicky, Mitsouko, Shalimar, etc.
mushroomy chocolate and berry? hmm. I always thought it was mango and coconut milk, trailed by the scent of orchids at the basenotes (it's a dead ringer for yardley's hanging gardens orchid talc/edt) but i do like your description, and facial expressions :p
@littlerayray77 Experimenting with minis is a great way to check out these perfumes. Also, Sephora and some dept stores will make up free sample atomizers of whatever fragrances you want to try.
I finally plucked up the courage to wear this to work today. While it's lovely it just wouldn't budge from the Kouros-esque 'unwashed body' smell. It just kind of lingers in the background. Either that, or I didn't wash thoroughly enough this morning. Hmm... I'll try it again tomorrow.

@RebShloime Don't let the sales assistants steer you wrong: Black Orchid is for men and women. The same stuff in the same bottle is sold at both men's and women's fragrance counters. Get it, wear it, love it.

@DudeFromTheBeach Edp is longer lasting than edt or edc, & yes, pure parfum has the highest concentration of perfume oils of all, & would be longest lasting. But the variables are the built-in tenacity of the fragrances (certain ones just last longer than others, depending on the ingredients and the composition), as well your skin's ability to hold onto a fragrance.
I believe Black Orchid is available in a perfume oil, and you might consider layering the edp with the oil for greatest tenacity.
I'm loving the oil spray, on paper at least. I wonder if the EDP is any different. Intend to try it on my skin soon, and sparingly, since I can smell the paper swatch I got more than 24 hours ago from across the room.
@muniqueen1 Oh yeah - essential to try it on your skin. I've not tried the oil spray of Black Orchid, but I'll bet it's great - probably really long lasting due to oil formulation. If there's an oil version of a fragrance, that's the one I tend to wear, cuz it seems to wear a little closer to the skin (your Black Orchid strip broadcasting across the room notwithstanding) & it's softer, & it's also a bit moisturizing, which I love.
I schmear Frederic Malle Musc Ravageur oil on my legs & arms.

I believe this was first released as ladies, then switched to unisex or mens. IMO it's a bold woman, or sexually comfortable man. (I'm the latter). After testing this only a few times I'm already planning to buy a bottle.

I haven't noticed a longevity issue, but it's handy that Black Orchid comes in a dry oil and other body products, so you can layer them to make the scent last longer.
For everyone that has heard this was MJ favorite perfume..maybe..but can u really believe anything Latoya says? haha. No but really, I read an article from Karen Faye his makeup artist and he did like this fragrance but only wore it when he could not get his favorite fragrance Bal a Versailles (pure parfum of course). They smell similar in my opinion.

I also read that he loved another old one, Jungle Gardenia. It seems he loved big, decadent, "grande dame" fragrances.
LOL..Do you have the Bal a Versailles pure parfum? I have the EDT and I have heard that the pure parfum in the smallest bottle smells waaaay better than the EDT.
I do have the parfum, which is richer and more incense-y than the only other version I've smelled, which is the eau de cologne I sneakily opened at Loehmann's - and then got yelled at for by the SA.

No way of putting it more politely: she doesn't know what she's talking about. There is only one Black Orchid, in only one bottle - black glass with gold label.
(Incidentally, I have the wrong bottle at the beginning of my video - it's the Black Orchid Voile de Fleur bottle, with the black label instead of the gold...I goofed up!)
Ask your lady to show you the "women's" Black Orchid. If it's the black bottle with the gold label that reads "Tom Ford Black Orchid", then that's the right stuff.
Whoops! I do believe your eagle eyes have caught the mistake. It's is indeed the VdF bottle, not the BO bottle, which is the same, but with a gold plate on the front. Apologies.

This scent is pretty weird. The top notes are indeed "interesting". I bought mine for that reason alone [a gift set!]. It was a contender for Chanel Allure Sensuelle. They both have facets of all "perfume families". It's a spiced oriental/gourmand/green/woody/chypre: a chimera of a scent. Black Orchid is a long, raven haired oriental woman wearing a stylish yet loud multilayered kimono. She may seem wild at first but once she exposes the layers of a more muted nature she's really quite tame.
I like this fragance a lot. I love your channel and I am glad I found it. You are a very beautiful lady with great taste and knowledge of perfumes. Thanks for creating these videos!

Your own nose can teach you. Just put a little consciousness into your everyday smelling - all smells: food, nature, people, perfume. You'll start to make connections, and to be able to remember them. It's all about where you put your focus. And how much a "fume-nerd" you are!
Yeah! I know, everyday I try very hard to train myself smelling every possible smell, but come on!! you know there are some secrets you use, and a kind of techniques to keep smells in your mind!
Angel is all about the chocolate/cotton candy/patchouli, and while Black Orchid has a chocolate note, it's more restrained, and blended with florals. Black Orchid isn't as loud and penetrating as Angel, and not as "edible".

I find on my skin the scent is mostly spicy and the lethal dose of coumarin makes the vanilla last forever [once the weird top notes fade, it smells like a derviative of Angel]. And it's definitely a chypre in my book because it contains treemoss and oakmoss extracts.
This scent is one of my favorites! They should have marketed it to both men and women. I had heard that story about Tom Ford and never knew if it were true. If it is he has had his nose in some great places! LOL!!
I really love Black Orchid - 'Pleasingly Weird' is definitely an appropriate label but it's so unique. I always get comments when i wear this, although granted they're not always positive :)

I was prepared to love this one and I do love the dark, truffley, almost liqourice opening, but then it becomes all about the pineapple on me with hints of chocolate and it just annoys me. I wish they would do a version with just the beginning notes! Michael Jackson's favourite perfume apparently.

There are some fragrances that have that "odd" smell to them.
Dolce and Gabbana's "The One" has that somewhat urinary smell to it.

LOL..Do you have the Bal a Versailles pure parfum? I have the EDT and I have heard that the pure parfum in the smallest bottle smells waaaay better than the EDT.

I do have the parfum, which is richer and more incense-y than the only other version I've smelled, which is the eau de cologne I sneakily opened at Loehmann's - and then got yelled at for by the SA.

hmm..when I went to look for it, the lady at the counter said they were all out of Black Orchid for Men, but she did have the womens.She said the Mens has been selling like crazy lately, that they are always running out. So what's the deal?

No way of putting it more politely: she doesn't know what she's talking about. There is only one Black Orchid, in only one bottle - black glass with gold label.
(Incidentally, I have the wrong bottle at the beginning of my video - it's the Black Orchid Voile de Fleur bottle, with the black label instead of the gold...I goofed up!)
Ask your lady to show you the "women's" Black Orchid. If it's the black bottle with the gold label that reads "Tom Ford Black Orchid", then that's the right stuff.

Whoops! I do believe your eagle eyes have caught the mistake. It's is indeed the VdF bottle, not the BO bottle, which is the same, but with a gold plate on the front. Apologies.

This scent is pretty weird. The top notes are indeed "interesting". I bought mine for that reason alone [a gift set!]. It was a contender for Chanel Allure Sensuelle. They both have facets of all "perfume families". It's a spiced oriental/gourmand/green/woody/chypre: a chimera of a scent. Black Orchid is a long, raven haired oriental woman wearing a stylish yet loud multilayered kimono. She may seem wild at first but once she exposes the layers of a more muted nature she's really quite tame.

Your own nose can teach you. Just put a little consciousness into your everyday smelling - all smells: food, nature, people, perfume. You'll start to make connections, and to be able to remember them. It's all about where you put your focus. And how much a "fume-nerd" you are!

My only technique is repetition. Smell enough different perfumes with sandalwood or iris, and you begin to recognize it when you come across it.
And reading all the wonderful perfume blogs and writers out there is so educational and inspiring, too.

Angel is all about the chocolate/cotton candy/patchouli, and while Black Orchid has a chocolate note, it's more restrained, and blended with florals. Black Orchid isn't as loud and penetrating as Angel, and not as "edible".

True. "Debauched", "boozy" etc.
I find on my skin the scent is mostly spicy and the lethal dose of coumarin makes the vanilla last forever [once the weird top notes fade, it smells like a derviative of Angel]. And it's definitely a chypre in my book because it contains treemoss and oakmoss extracts.

This scent is one of my favorites! They should have marketed it to both men and women. I had heard that story about Tom Ford and never knew if it were true. If it is he has had his nose in some great places! LOL!!

I really love Black Orchid - 'Pleasingly Weird' is definitely an appropriate label but it's so unique. I always get comments when i wear this, although granted they're not always positive :)

I was prepared to love this one and I do love the dark, truffley, almost liqourice opening, but then it becomes all about the pineapple on me with hints of chocolate and it just annoys me. I wish they would do a version with just the beginning notes! Michael Jackson's favourite perfume apparently.
