  • write-back cache is not safe due to power outages

  • your the best

  • i still have a problem, documents folder can be drive mounted, pictures videos music and downloads folder i want as drive mounts, i wish there's a way to do it like what ive done with user\AppData\Local\Temp mounted drive where i also moved my internet temp folder.

hope you have a new updated video thanks,

    james

  • hello sir james, update, the way you made a drive partition for games, i just discovered you can make one for your user temp folders which can be really nasty, its a bit tricky, i copied the environmental values and move it to another drive temp folder, then emptied the original folder in the ssd so it would allow mounting a drive partition in the original temp, then putting the environmental values back, so it would return to userAppData\Local\Temp drive, used 40gb and works fine!

  • @SirJamesDDJ does this also work for a HDD? or maybe momentus xt?

  • My Raid 0 works like a dream now, thank´s to this guide :D Many thanks!

  • Hey... I have two questions for you bro.. which SSD did you purchase (it's 2AM, I might have missed the brand/make you've mentioned if you did) because you're pushing well over 500mbps.

Second question is.. what do you mean about watching what we delete? I have an SSD (not in Raid) and I've easily deleted over 10GB of data already. I've had this SSD running Windows 7 Pro for about 7 months now.

  • What stripe size your using?

I have the Revodrive X2 for only the Windows 7 Pro 64bit.

Also two Vertex 2 in raid-0 stripe 64KB.

The Revodrive X2 has standard 4 drives in raid-0 stripe 64KB but the performance is slower in HD Tune than my Vertex 2 drives.

  • hey man! awesome video! will probably try this if i ever set up a raid array :) but at the moment i'v got 3 WD green disks..i'v pulled em all out of their external cases and put them in my pc..the thing is though..they shut down after alil while..as they would since they are green disks..is there a way to disable that function? cuz it takes a while to start em up so i can play games, watch a movie etc...any ideas? thanks

  • your number 1 at the jobe

  • Didn't OCZ forum members make a "tweak" tool for SSDs?

  • @Twisted86

    Yes,

    This tool does it all.

  • Does this work for nonraid drives ?

  • By the way, I downloaded ATTO and my benchmarks are reading only around 275 and I notice yours is well over 600. Why do you think that is? Let me know man!

  • Dude..thanks for the great tweaks! I just got my Crucial C300 and loaded Win7 using my Lenovo recovery disks. Unfortunately, recovery cd's did not disable defrag among other things it should have. So I had to do some tweaking of my own with your recommended tweaks.

Can you recommend how I can go about viewing TRIM?

    Thanks again man!

  • SirJamesDJ, whats the name of the song/band? this song I like it thx

  • lol your "talk later" sating sounded really normal in this video.

  • Great videos man! ..

So I ordered my Vertex 2 (may do a Raid-0 ... still deciding) .. with the exception of the raid & partitioning you did, should I do all the same tweaks on my 120 gig Vertex 2 when it arrives? Also, I built a machine for a friend with an Intel X25-M a few months back- should I do these tweaks for that machine as well (again .. with the exception of the raid & partitioning you did?)

Thanks! Keep up the good work!

  • @buddha2oo6 I've got a thread stickied on my website's Forums in the Operating Systems section listing exactly the updated tweaks to perform.

  • Dude you're awesome!! :)

  • Hey James, I just installed Windows 7 on my SSD. Shouldn't I reallocate the directories in the install like Users which contains My Documents, My Videos etc. to a partition on the data drive? Also the temp directories too?

  • wow thanks james ur vid was a big help on my 2x OCZ Aglitiy 2 SSDs thanks bro

  • ahh, ok. well thx for the info anyways, I'll give it a shot :)

  • Can you remake this without the gay fashion show music?

  • @AndyinPhoenix Wish I would have. Google won't pay me for videos that have music in them. Didn't know that back then. I don't have the raw video anymore unfortunately.

  • @SirJamesDDJ do i need the intel matrix thing and what do you mean becareful what you delete??? doesnt TRIM take care of all deleteing issues??? how do you clear garbage on the SSD if you get garbage and if garbage space thats is unused but SSD is not letting you use because stuff is deleted please explain :) (i dont use RAID and idk how to get the intel matrix thing for my asus mobo that was specificly built for my PC asus g73jh) please reply hope i didnt confuse you

  • what for type ssd have you???

  • What would I put for my Second Level Data Cache with a Q9550? Do all these tweaks apply if I have a single Vertex Turbo?

  • Excellent videos man!

  • do that works with all SSD´s or only OCZ?

  • Can you explain more on what you mean by "be careful about what you delete."?

Do I have to save all my junk files instead of frequently deleting them like I would on a computer without SSD?

    Thanks!

  • It's much better now that FW 1.5 has been released for the Turbos.

    Not really an issue anymore.

  • so you mean I don't have to worry about deleting files any longer with 1.5 firmware?

  • @jleeangelo Delete them yes. But with GC now, they won't junk up your SSD as bad as before.

Watch "Keeping your SSD running brilliant"

  • nice vid...what is that track you have going in the background?

  • What song is this btw?

  • do these tips apply to any ssd or just the vertex series ?

  • any SSD really :)

  • did i do something wrong cause now it takes my computer forever to shutdown

  • @zayres29 You have an X-Fi soundcard? If so, turn off the encoder before you shutdown.

    If not, then re-enable pagefile.

  • i just have the onboard sound and i dont know how to turn the page file on or off... im new to this its my first computer build i ran hdtune and its studdering really bad i have 4 patriot warp v2 raid 0 if that helps any

  • @zayres29 Try just changing the clearpagefileatshutdown to where it was by default.

  • Thanks for the video SirJames! Good stuff, very helpful!

  • im just still confused.....the sata controller is only 3.0Gbs right? how are you going past that.....because its 3 of them together or what?

  • Shouldn't you have your Page File moved off your SSD to a HDD because constant writing will lower your SSD's lifetime?

  • doesnt sata 2 run 3.0Gbps? how you getting that high of speed on hd tune...im a newb sorry...but just wanted to know... im lost.

  • @awponder You mean how do I get that high of speed or how does one get to 3GB/s?

My speed is due to 3 Vertex Turbos in RAID 0, and also taking care of the drives.

  • sirjames you the man all i can say is wow i got 3x30gb vertex in raid0 getting 600mb avg reads and 500 avg writes after your masterclass in tweaks i would love to see a video on how to keep these ssd running fast thanks again

  • Thanks bro!

I'll make a video of that, soon as I get my setup up and running again.

One of my SSDs bricked yesterday for some reason.

  • HT is only good for VMs or HyperV, right ?

  • Careful of what I delete?

    Can't I just shift + delete?

  • He's saying you shouldn't download a ton of crap and delete a lot because the drives slow down the more they accumulate, even with garbage colleciton enabled.

  • That is correct. Though a tool called AS Cleaner helps to a degree.

  • I've been thinking about doing this, but I was hoping they would come out with a raid 0 GC solution this year. Just to early of a technology I guess.

  • They've got RAID 0 GC, just not RAID 0 TRIM.

    Two different things.

  • Oh thanks for the correction. I've seen both terms used synonymously so I figured they were the same thing. Is the different that trim runs automatically at the hardware level while GC runs as a program?

  • i7 is 4 core's so why put it on 8 for boot?

is it because multithreading is 8?

  • Yes. 8 = with hyperthreading.

  • OCZ released 1.5 which improves performance and bugs. Make sure to flash!

  • I'm not sure about my 30GB Turbos yet. Plus, it's gotta be flashed from within Windows, and the SSD has to be a secondary drive.

I'll wait til they test it out more, beyond that it sounds like a huge PITA.

  • Ah you're right. For some reason they're lagging on the turbo editions. However, I do not think it has to be flashed from within windows, most are recommending flashing from a bootable disk. Not sure on this though.

  • The FW 1.0 like I have has to be through Windows. If you bought a Turbo with FW 1.4 then you can do it through DOS

  • Ah ok, that makes sense. Do you think you can make another video for a non-RAID setup? I am considering purchasing a vertex now and waiting to get another for a RAID 0 setup. I am unsure as to how much different your tweaks would be if only using one SSD.

  • I just baught an OCZ Vertex 120GB ssd as well and I'm hoping SirJamesDDJ can make a Video for installing it form scratch with tweaks and how to also update the Firmware on the SSD... ALL from scratch please SirJames... we are counting on you :D

  • @djgroundzeroTO

The method for flashing my Vertex Turbo 1.0 FW was a lot different than what you'll have to do.

Yours is as simple as booting to an ISO that you burn onto a disc.

  • I'm probably going to be working on a few new major components for my system as it appears my current M/B is acting up. After, extensive research, I'm probably going to get the OCZ Vertex 60 GB drive.

Your videos look thorough and provide some good tips.

  • i don't mean to swear but SHIT! lol the speed, i saw your posts on EVGA forums

  • Yeah dude but really one has to take such care of what gets written onto these things. Can't just junk em up like regular HDDs, or performance takes a major hit.

  • yea ive seen some of what can happen to them if u do it gets just as slow as a normal hdd, the only thing id put on my would be windows 7 and use my other hdds for programs 7 storage

  • Awesome video man!

I have a quick question though: with the "Second level cache" at datamanagement, your CPU has L1/L2 4x256and L3 shared cache. My CPU is still an older dualcore (E6600) which only has L1 (32kb per core) and L2 shared (4MB).

Any idea what i should use as size, or should i just keep it at 0?

    Thanks in advance! :)

  • Probably just keep it at zero.

But for hypothetical purposes it would be 4096 decimal.

  • nice video with, i hope trim is working soon on the vertex turbo's, i heard ocz made something for the summit's alrdy?

  • Supposidly 1.4 is gonna have it, but it doesn't do me any good with Raid 0

  • Great video, thanks for the info! I'm expecting a shipment of 2x Vertexes 30G in the mail tomorrow and was wondering what firmware you'd recommend I flash (1.3, 1.4 or 1.41) to before following your advice in these 2 vids you posted?

    Thanks!

  • music overwhelms your voice

  • quick q, if i am using an amd motherboard, what should i do for the intel stroage manager step?

  • Thanks for this these great video's, they were very usefull, especially the sanitary erase procedure which I was having problems understanding from the ocz forum threads.

  • Great video James, I was curious out of all these tweaks do any apply to just a single SSD drive? I have an OCZ Turbo 60gb drive.

    Thanks in advance,

    -R

  • Don't take your self for granted, you are very good, got a lot of talent. Some can explain things and one can go into a coma due to bordom. You keep it interesting, that's talent. Got a couple of SSD's and wanting to learn this stuff.

  • The background music is distracting from your very excellent presentation. As a musician I am drawn to the music vs your presentation, thus distracted. You are excellent but the music really draws my mind towards it, vs the information.

    Thanks for posting.

  • I'll take it as a compliment. It's just my style - I presume if there wasn't music some ppl would say I drone on and on. I'll try to keep the volume down a bit though.

  • My Raid suck's :)) i want SSD with 1tb :) ! i can get my hard drives to go over 200mb/sec even with you settings :( !?

  • You done any disk defrags? Diskeeper is a great one. Also, try CCleaner and "wipe free space" in that program. Disk Cleanup would be a good idea as well.

Not every HDD can get great access times though. Pretty much it's just VelociRaptors and 15,000RPM SCSI drives that can.

  • Are this setting or tweaks good or working with usual hard disk's ?

  • I've gotten word that a lot of these work well with VelociRaptors also

  • Thank you for your answer ! i guess i can't have them all in one :) that wont be marketing....! i will try Diskeeper but still i don't think i will passe 200mb in Hd Tune ! Maybe it's from my e8400 to or the maximus formula special edition....so until the prices will go down for i7 and maximus 3 formula for ex. i will stay like this ....! thank you again ! Have Fun !

  • great video thx for the tweaks but i have a question...i'm planning to buy 4 vertex turbo's and install them in raid 0 config...can anyone tell me if the hdd controller can handle the speed of that setup (i'm going for 800+ mb/s read speeds) ? and what is the theoritical max of an ICH10R chipset? thx

  • Hey i for one want you see you run a Lightsmark 2008 test. oh and love you vids

  • just followed your instructions and it worked perfect :) many thanks. i did use a forth ssd and the results are great

  • Comment removed

  • nice vid, but after i did this the shutdown on windows 7 takes like 5 min... do u know any reason why this happened?

  • leave Clear Page File At Shutdown the wayit is and the wait time will go away !

  • Just so you know cache is pronounced like cash.

  • Yeah I went back and forth with cash-eh and cash and just settled on cash-eh. Not my biggest concern.

  • Thanks for any help. What about speedstep

This my first OC. It seems stable.

  • Should I change my QPI PLL Vcore from default 1.1

  • I just leave that on Auto

  • I need help with my evga x58 sli le bios. What are good voltages for i7 920D0 at 160x20 memory 1600 2x10 7-7-7-20-59-1t

    Zalman9900 cooler, hyperx mem fan

Got vdimm at 1.65 4.8gt/s speedstep and turbo enabled also +125 and 1.33vtt

  • What's your vantage score with these SSD's. I'd love to see what they are.

  • Awesome Tute Video M8

Great Post and i like it alot.

Thnx for your tweaks, i want see more tweaks from you!

    Greetings,

    PhoeniX

    From the Netherlands

  • Awesome videos!! The tweaks increase my RAID 0 VelciRaptors performance by an average of 20 MB/sec and increased Burst Rate to 4GB/sec!!!! Overall Windows performance is night and day. Thanks!! I'm also selling my raptors to get three SSD's like you have. You convinced me!

  • whick raptors are they, i may buy them from you if you like.

  • Yes sata III is what I meant, your right, your setup looks like it is hiting the limit of sata II though

  • thx for the video

really gr8 review and music :D

could u post the benchmark from AS SSD app :) ?

  • btw about the game mount dir

i think its better on ssd then the loading is better

and the tiny files could load faster

  • I dunno dude, in Crysis the load screens fly past

  • WOW! That's super fast! Awesome video! 5/5

  • ASUS has a pcie card with USB 3 and sata 6

    It's x4 and $30

  • Oh you mean the 6GB/s. I doubt that card is better than onboard. Every card I've seen that is an improvement over ICH10R is $400 at least.

  • What is the over all boost in performance from all the tweaks I think I'm gonna wait for sata6 support
