  • well.... kendo can be a sport but also can be a martial art. for people that do it daily, well...it's a martial art. For people that train crazy in the summer and don't go more than once a week usually, well.. it's a sport. Many people today also treat kendo very seriously and take it as a life long practice. The changes in kendo have not made it "soft" or "weak" it's just ...different. Don't ever chase skill in kendo because the real person you are to defeat is yourself.

    Thanks,

    -xxgoodideaxx.

  • One first viewing this looks awesome. On second viewing, it seems like he's screwing up all the basic kihon. I'm still a beginner, but much of what he's doing would earn me a lecture if I did them with a sensei.

  • wow! I like it!!!

  • أموت في كده

  • He jumps like a rabbit.

  • Headache garenteed

  • I like it. I don´t claim anyone to do perfect form, because to do so, you need to be a true master.

But as many people said I would raise my left arm a bit more, too.

I don´t block my sight that way and my men comes with the forword motion and less out of my arms.

Still, really nice work, excellent control. Keep it up!

    Ooozzzz.

  • I had no idea how amateur my Kirikaeshi was until I watched this. Amazing :)

  • rase the arms higher

  • head banging Session

  • This is not the way of the sword. It is merely beating a helmet with a stick. Shinaido is a lie.

  • fucking perfect...

  • I agree, there must be a fist of distance between the forehead and the left hand

    GOOD SPIRIT! :)

  • imagine if they didnt put on their men o_o

  • I think this is a good kirikaeshi. The maai and speed are excelent. However, the feet are a little jumpy, the left hand is too low and the kakegoe is not good, in my opinion.

I would sacrifice a little of the speed to correct these, especially the left hand issue. The strikes have no 'furikaburi'. Also, I'd try to maintain my body lower, as it would give me more balance. At last, in Brazil we are oriented to perform the kirikaeshi sequence in a single breath, with extreme vocalization.

    :)

  • I just learned this, this week. The footwork is the toughest for me...I haven't learned men strike while moving backward!

  • I dont get some peoples comments, this is an excellent kirikaeshi! especially at that kind of speed!

  • @silkyjohns0n its not fast lol... with bad form. not proper kihon kendo.

  • @hikitsuzuku Can you do kirikaishi like that?

With that speed, accuracy and the ki-ken-tai?

look at his tenouchi, and accuracy; its so nice.

It doesn't matter if you do not lift your left hand when you do kirikaishi, as long as you are using correct tenouchi and know what you are practicing. many hatchi dans say do big slow and correct... they say that because non pro kenshi (many over seas) cant do correct kirikaishi at high speed like pros. Have you seen professionals do kirikaishi?

  • @tenken1013 youre just showing how much you dont understand. hes hitting with his right hand. your left is always the power hand. there is no correct tenouchi without using the left properly. anyways yes i can hit that fast if i dont lift all the way like him. the hard part is doing it correctly with kihon and speed. your kendo is probaly americanized and sport kendo. its hard to find but old school kendo is the best not the tapping shit you see now days.

  • @hikitsuzuku I agree the last part you said but you have realize that kendo is changing. If we talked about what is right (old school kendo) and what is not right (sports kendo), it will go on forever. I hope you dnt take offense to what I said, I did not mean to be rude, dnt take it personally. But what I dnt understand how you think he is using his right hand..He is using both right and left hand tenouchi. if he did not he wnt be able to hit the target with his left hand in the middle.

  • @tenken1013 uhhh his left hand is not in the middle. if you cant see it you need to train a little more. anyways the best japan has are all old school guys. not sport kendo. sport kendo has no power and is just about touching the point while trying to be fast. old school has more power and takes time to learn correctly but after time the speed will come. proper footwork and koshi are the basis of old school kendo which many sport kendoist lack like the person in the video.

  • @hikitsuzuku You denigrate "sport kendo", but like it or not Kendo is a sport. It's certainly not a martial art; it has absolutely no combat applications whatsoever (no one even carries a sword nowadays - it's not even legal in most countries) so frankly you come across as a bit snobby when you talk about "old school kendo" beind superior when it has absolutely no relevence in the modern world. There's nothing wrong with sports Kendo, since sport is the only application Kendo has.

  • @DrChalkwithering captain obvious strikes! its called martial ARTS for a reason it is an art outdated by technology just like any martial ART. any simply put sport kendo emphasis is on speed before technique to score and win matches but you will never be able to do proper kirikaeshi, kakarigeiko or kikonju with sport kendo simply put. old school kendo focuses on technique and power before speed which will come later. old school kendo is boring and wont interest your casual practioner.

  • @DrChalkwithering old school will focuses on basics and can be tedious and boring but will take you further. why do you thinks other countries tend to get smashed by most japanese kendoists? old school kendo takes lots of time and dedication but will make you better by practicing much more fundamentals and not having its main focus on speed and winning. if youve ever faced someone whos dedicated themselves to this way it would open your eyes and make you envious of what theyve learned as have i.

  • @hikitsuzuku Having read some of your comments on here, there's no way you are an experienced kendo practitioner. Most kendo practitioners I know have humility and dignity, not the massive ego you display. Pretty much every comment you make here ends with some snarky remark about how awesome you are, which is an indicator that you're not nearly as good as you think you are.

  • @hikitsuzuku Look up "Osaka Budosai - Kendo (kihon) " on youtube...

Watch Teramoto (former All Japan champion/national team captain) do basics...

  • @tenken1013 just because the caption says kihon it doesnt mean it is. anyways the technique in the video you mentioned is much better than this. they hit with their left even though its small hits and not up to furikaburi. still correct just smaller. this guy only uses his right. i know more than you about proper from practice not youtube.

  • it's the JJJ meeeeeen

  • 0:43 SOUL TRANSFER COMPLETEEEE

  • feet, left hand... work on them - speed is not as important as it seems , for grading, avoid this video.. nice distance though.

  • Holy crap i still can't strike that fast.

  • @MoQuake Its mainly to warm up before other training, but it does serve a very important purpose in your men strike

  • left thand a bit low..

  • オー!ハヤスギルー!

  • wow.. i looked at this video many times.. great demonstration !!!!

  • I love the sounds in slow motion! :D

  • Actually this isn't bad kirikaeshi. yes his hands don't go above his eyes as far as it should be done in shinsa, but this form of kirikaeshi is more focused on controlling your breathing, keeping good spirit and form (which the kihon isn't too great at first) and good zanshin. he's got good zanshin after the sequence as it shows him attempting to own the center after but also if you look carefully, he's not jumping during his footwork, he's scooting forward.

  • its normal for youtube to have a lot of backseat drivers commenting "expertly" on anything.. kendo, cars, politics, games, sports. Don't think too much of it.

  • In Japan, that is how they do kirikaeshi during practice. I guess the reason why everyone is arguing about his kirikaeshi is because it doesn't resemble a shinsa kirikaeshi? I honestly think his kirikaeshi is pretty damn good! Why? Because his wrist flexibility is quite impressive, he demonstrates good endurance, his arms are stretched out, and his body remains in an upright position ( a common mistake that I've seen in my dojo is bending of the torso forward).

  • @Koyama956 I agree, his accuracy, tenouchi, power, and ki ken tai is all there...

Many people are told from many hachi dans from japan to do kirikaishi slow big and correct because from the eyes of hatchi dan, people who dont do kendo for a living cant produce correct kirikaishi (tenouchi, distance, etc) at a high speed...

Look up "Osaka Budosai - Kendo (kihon) "

Teramoto (former Japan Captain) and the Osaka Police performing basics...

  • First focus on form, then focus on speed.

  • I know that some of the comments are not nice, so I'll try to be as polite as I can.

First, this kirikaeshi IS wrong, no matter how you look at it.

The most important thing in kendo is KIAI. In the second set of sayu men, kakarite is mute.

Besides that, the footwork is wrong.

The left hand is not doing anything, also.

    This is not kihon.

Is it better to do it fast or to do it properly? Sensei always says: Do it "well" AND do it fast.

    Speed is worthless without technique.

  • well to defend those kendoka

i dont know whether u practice urself but i guess so

like all techniques in kendo none of them is easy to learn and kendo is always about perfection

to achieve this grade u need to practice ur whole live

but what i want to say is... yes its wrong ... but its fast and he hits ! ofc the footwork suffered from this as well as the motion being not fully done (aka rise of the arms)

but he hit and he made it fast, but the kiai was bad... and yes technique > speed ;)

  • It's pretty cool to see kendo videos filmed in ur own dojo :P

btw, I filmed a documentary on Kendo in this dojo, check it out on my channel! (also rate and subscribe)

  • The Shinai needs to be raised above the head - look at the position of the left hand during this exercise - it suggests that the right hand is doing the work?

For those that know - rather than disrespectful comments often found on youtube - this exercise is VERY tough to do. Slow down - get it right.

Its very interesting to see oneself on video and is a real boost to improving oneself.

Best of luck with your practice.

  • before you do fast you have to do correct. Doing kirikaeshi a quarter of this speed, but carefully, is infinitively more valuable

  • shitty form...lol...this should not be on youtube.

  • he is fast but he have bad technique. Jumps a lot.

  • da hell man! he's fast, too fast.

  • those shinai sticks arent very heavy so you can move pretty quikly with them

  • it is not good

  • I sure would not want to be the one getting hit on the Head!

  • wow how fast need, some year training for this o_O 5*

  • this kirikaeshi is not good actually.....

  • why it isn't

  • because he never even raised his left hand over his head! one basic of kirikaeshi!

  • haha look at 0:10 he raised his left hand over his head!

  • nope....

thats not the way its meant to be...

nevertheless if he does it once in the 21 strikes he need to do its not near being good....

  • -_- hmm....... also wie lange machst du schon kendo ?

  • 1 1/2 Jahre

  • :D is ja schon gut wollt dich nur einweinig ärgern

und ich finde das er denn men aber trotz der geschwindigkeit gut trifft

  • ja kla^^

sein niveau is fuer mich anfaenger welten entfernt!

aber es gibt ja immer was zu verbesser xP

  • i'm a beginner, so i enjioyed watching this...i would have to agree about the hand position, though. my sensei keeps reminding me of the same thing, "left hand above your head!!"

thanks for the vid, great learning tool for all out there...

  • Yall need to stop dissing and post up some response video. While this isn't perfect, i bet most you aren't either. I think he did a pretty kick butt job.

  • cause this is no competition^^

its just the training for kirikeashi...

  • speed only...... haih, left hand must raise above head...... all the senseis in the world would tell u that....

  • @izzazalexander

watch the zen nippon video and look closely at the fast kirikaeshi.

Is that guy raising his left hand over his head during the fast kirikaeshi? Ya its a year later, but just seeing this comment. If i were them, i would've shown a slow version and a fast one. But i really don't see anything wrong with what he's doing.

  • the slow version meaning at full speed, but nice and big.

  • @izzazalexander he was probably told that, his dad is a 7th Dan sensei, I've practiced with both of the guys in this video.

  • @izzazalexander of course they tell that for beginers but he probably is a san dan or greater.

  • This is not kendo.

    not seme

    not good ashi sabaki

    not good sayu men

    left hand too low

  • wow, he's freakin fast. I can do kirikaeshi but slower, you know, to keep form. But if I tried to go faster, I dont think Id be able to go as fast as he is.

  • Kirikaeshi is more about form than speed. He needs to lift his left hand higher on the backswing. If he is 4th dan, I am sure he knows that and is simply sacrificing movements for increased speed.

  • Question:

    1) Kirikaeshi is about hitting sayu-men, isn't it?

    2) Which hand is supposed to provide the power?

  • How can he block so perfectly with his shinai just straight?? I have to bend mines and move mines so much. lol.

  • He just moves his from side to side.

  • As far as speed or skill, this is great (he'd totally get ippon on me in like, 5 seconds), but as far as technique and form...as far as kihon is concerned, there leaves a bit to be desired.

  • wow.. fastest kirikaeshi ive ever seen.... but bad form

  • whoa, he is fast... im still a junior so.. i will say he is fine.

  • Which Don?

The Don River? Don Juan? Don Vito Corleone?

    :)

  • The foot work........ >.>

  • @HeroOfXanadus is called ashi sabaki

  • hmm..Good speed and kiai. However, my sensei once told me to focus on moving forward, not jumping. In addition, when raising the hand, u must be able to see the opponent. This guy uses too much of his wrists and not his arms

  • O_O THAT WAS FUCKING INSANE!!!!!!!

  • You should always raise the shinai with the left fist above your forehead when striking in kirikaeshi. Go slow and get the footwork (attacking side using okuri ashi, recieving side using ayumi ashi) and striking motion right first is probably best before even thinking about attempting kirikaeshi at the speed shown. Otherwise, you'll be missing the point of kirikaeshi, which would be terrible waste. There are articles explaining the benefits of kirikaeshi online if you're curious.

  • I am new to kendo but some of you seem to know what your talking about from experience. I can't spot it with the eye but can you explain what is wrong with his footwork or form that you are talking about? From an outsider view so it makes sense. It would mean a lot. I am trying to learn and my footwork and form is terrible.

  • wow, i wish my kirikaeshi was one hundredth as good as this. it's so, so, so much harder than it looks. great job!!

  • haha he is sort of.. jumping .. if i didnt see it wrongly

  • You need seme...just that and it`s going to be perfect....

God that was fast...I am so slou......T_T

  • he is very fast. much faster than i could do it. but, his foot work is a bit sloppy. the jukdo (shinai) hits the homyan (men) but its not at the same time as his foot hits the ground (i'm not sure if its like that in Kendo, but in Kumdo its differenet)

  • A healthy discussion of kendo is encouraged; however, as the one who posted this video, I'm dismayed with the juvenile comments of skchoyee and have blocked this user.

  • @burgess77 thanks for the vdeo i need this for my first grade in less than a months time and its always nice to watch people do it proper :)

  • Dude..... get a life...

  • The left hand is not in the center because you kan see the position in relation to the right hand even if you see it from side view

I m sure that kendo for you is something temporary in you life because you cant realaise or at least understand the diference betwend sports and art.

Thank you any way for call me "beginer sensei"; is too much. I most like a beginner.

  • I watch the video again:

When you do kirikaeshi you must have zeme at least before the first and last cut. This kirikaeshi you defend so much is dead. Its looks like the kendoka is some kind of robot.

Ashi sabaki like I told you before is hoping and makes all uglier.

I insist that the left hand is too low and if you watch the slow motion the kendoka not cuts sayu men when motodashi lower his shinai.

  • Very common kirikaeshi among dan graded kendokas. The left hand works too low and not correctly in the midle. Left hand should always come upp above the eyes. Ashi sabaki is hoping in the video and not gliding as should be. The cut in kirikaeshi is sayu men and in the video is something else.

    not beutiful.

  • umm just wondering..are you talking about striker or the receiver? 00:48 check out the ashi-sabaki following the last fumikomi ashi. Correct me if I'm wrong, but is ayumi ashi allowed for the attacker?

  • wow...please...dont talk.. .. like you can keep a form (if u had any) while going that speed. if you can, record your self and please post it..I'm sure everyone want to see your amazing ashi-sabaki << btw..it's footwork (save you the time needed to google it.

  • wow...i guess setting idiots straight makes one gay now huh? Kendoka should be a bit more humble, and definitely more polite, if you are in fact a kendoka. What manners...and a retort worthy of a high schooler.

  • if you are a kendoka, you should be more conprehensive and less agresive. I wouldn't ever follow any of your advices...

  • A true kendoka always spell checks.

  • sorry, but luckily, spanish is my language.

  • i agree! i am flawed as a kendoka but great on being a warrior..meaning i seem to charge in w/o thinking...received countless kaeshi do waza.lawl

  • Man you are so hilarious!

I love it when mudansha get on kendo forums and try to sound like they know what they're talking about.

Have they taught you how to put on dogi yet?

  • /love it !

  • impressive

  • The ashi sabaki is wrong. Even tough the practitiones has hitting speed, he crosses his feet and when executing the last men he advances his left foot.

  • Elenwynd: you eye is very good! I agree in what you say. The ashi sabaki is wrong.

  • This is before tanimura cut his hair haha
