@seehofer20 if you can imagine chopin experiencing symptoms of tuburculosis, residing in a gloomy chapel where a monk used to stay, with only goerge sand to be brave enough to come near you, and a crashing storm pounding on the 3 feet thick walls that contain only you and a pleyel piano, they sound pretty much the same :)
Best performance of this piece ever .. the beginning is so beautiful, but mastery of this prelude is including all of it together where in the middle section you feel pummelled taken away and then returned to the sublime ... Martha succeeds
simply amazing, her passionate performance made me fall in love with this prelude...
to all of you who find it rushed, turned up the volume really high, close your eyes, sit back and wait for the catharsis at 1:58 and tell me if you have ever heard it like that, it's like a whole other piece...
I came looking for this specific recording for one reason: Argerich is a master of dynamic. A lot of pianists start this piece a bit too loud.
The "thunderstrikes" in the middle of the song are preceded by a movement from pianississimo to fortississimo in a single measure. This is the largest dynamic gap in music, and lesser performers reach that measure too loudly to have anywhere to go from there.
No other recording matches this one in the degree of accuracy and violence.
@ashtear016 I couldn't disagree more. This is such a perfect tempo. Slower tempi are probably the norm, since ordinary players figure slower = more expressive. Argerich proves them wrong.

Wow she's actually playing it at a nice slow tempo! (I'm only saying she likes to play chopin much faster than originally intended :P).

@mmoynan I agree. It looks like it was done by a professional typesetter - do those even exist anymore? - with a great attention to detail.

I honestly think this piece is better at a slower tempo. This version seems almost rushed.
Alfredo Perl plays it beautifully and slow, and you can just feel every note.
