  • I was 14 years (1982) when I heard this song and brings back many memories of a girl I fell in love in panama in a U.S. air base, I remember till now

  • Comment removed

  • my two friends and I were 19-22 when this came out and we'd blast it every night from our alphabet city apartment balcony thinking we were so lucky and happy to be alive!

To Tracy and Marta...We Played! Love you always.

    Bill

  • Part of my 700+ only-80s songs on my mp3 player and laptop.

The 80s, a decade where music came from the heart first, paycheck second. Not like today's music.

  • I have always loved this song . Much of my life has been spent alone by choice and so I watch everyone else . Mostly its very entertaining but sometimes loanly . I was born in 1974 so I have seen a lot of things come and go and heard a lot of songs I come back to this from time to time for no reason known to me .

  • Hola: Saludos esta canción que yo inspiré. Ahora queda para el recuerdo....

  • I still love it

  • The vid makes me smirk now, but back then I was in love for the first time. MTV had just started, and was playing virtually only three vids: Motels, A Flock of Seagulls' "And I Ran", and Fleetwood Mac's "Gypsy". He had told me that we were only a summer thing, so I cried to the Motels for a month. Doesn't matter now (we've been married 25 years), but at the time, the only things that mattered were his eyes, and the Motels' line, "We lied about each other's strengths..." That's staying power.

  • I love this ladies voice...

  • I have to say that I LOVE the comments posted about this song. Great song, great singer, no doubt. I am 43 now and I loved the 80's music because it was so EVERYTHING. Everything was allowed, pop music, love ballads, hairbands/metalbands, the Springsteen type of middle America, the English Pop Music Scene, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Van Halen, Duran Duran, Solo Artists (from the 70's groups they were in ) like Robert Plant, Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Lionel Ritchie, etc. etc. The 80's ruled.

  • inudude15, you said it very well. There is indeed a "haunting elegance" to this song. Your words are carefully and wisely chosen. I respect your intelligent comment. You said "somber", I would have even added the actual word "sad" to my comments. Thankyou.

  • There's such a somber beauty to this song, even if you don't like eighties music, or rock, etc you have to like this song. It's almost haunting in its elegance.

  • Great band great song.

  • vevo does NOT deserve this awesome music.

  • Great tune. Haven't heard this in forever.

  • This band is my all time favorite band and also my all time FAVORITE SONG.... Always reminds me of my first love.... Alicia Bedard r Ranney....

  • greatest hits were those from eighties

  • I remember when this was on the radio a lot in '82-'83, and it stood apart from other songs because it was just so fucking...classy. I didn't see this video at the time, but it captures the mood of the song perfectly.

  • yes it was a privilege to live the 80s the best music back then i miss it i need a time machine.

  • @80Dantheman I'm with ya, brother.

  • awesome tune...

  • In 1982, THIS tune was always the most haunting to me. That synth work puts a chill in me, even to this very day. They don't make them like this anymore, which is a pity. Thanks for the memories, guys!

  • I've always loved her voice. Loved this song even way back then!

  • The early 80's were gold. Best time ever. Everything before it was too old and after it was too gay.

  • The entire album is great

  • lol hey man i remember the last half of the sixties, seventenies, eighties AND the ninties...im antique...lol...but this song is true too...yeeahhh eighties was my favorite decade...

  • Is she saying "drinks" or "dreams"???

  • @KristinKellyrose it's drinks

  • its like i told you KMET rocks LA good days

  • She sung the hell outta this song!

  • Forever Alone

  • oh my gosh such a great song, the theme song for every lonely person anywhere. i love it.

  • That's what I thought...and I got it. Thank you.

  • Got it! THANKS!!!

  • proof that we dont' need american idol to find quality singers!

  • She could have been another Patsy Cline or Dusty Springfield.

  • The singer died of cancer.

  • @skwiddjergensen Who, Martha Davis? She's not dead!

  • @Ribelin2000 REALLY?!!! Thank GOD! I am a musician and two of my buddies who are musicina's said that she left the band for cancer treatment and then died. Why have I not heard her on the radio anymore? I will look her up!! God! What a woman!!!

  • @skwiddjergensen -not correct. she is very much alive and occasionally tours under the Motels name

  • @Ribelin2000 The video reminds me of the inside of cover of LEd Zeppelin's "In Through the Out Door", album.

The song is right up there with "I'm Gonna Crawl", from the same Zep album.(Last song side two.)

  • @skwiddjergensen The singer is alive, well, and still touring and singing. Do some research first so you don't post garbage.

  • @itsmegp46 I trust other musicians I work with. Thank God she is alive. Thank you.

  • OK...I know that I am going to sound dumb, and whatever it is, I love this song, but what EXACTLY is the lyric: Is it; "only the lonely get blamed" or "only the lonely can play..." or "or-and I don't really think it is this-"only the lonely can pay..." Sorry to be such a doof, but I really want to know!

  • @maygoodcometous1 Only the Lonely Can Play

  • @skwiddjergensen THANK YOU! I thought it was that, but I wanted to be sure.

  • @maygoodcometous1 It's only the lonely can play.

  • @maygoodcometous1 only the lonely can play...

  • Great lyric!

  • @MrChiliman2 They were magical times...But as lots have said..We had less but more so to speak..Take every advantage of what you have now and years later you will look back and think "man those times were good"..

I was a Dj in the late 70s early 80s...Very heady days...Music , clothes ..the world changining as it does...Live each day as the best...

  • The 80's was a magical time not much different from today except that people had better music and actually went to see their friends instead of posting on their facebook.

  • Thank God I was at the perfect age in a perfect decade of music, fun times, teenage crushes and life seemed to be a bit easier :)

  • @MrAxeEdent Yes, life actually DID seem easier...and the music made you FEEL something....

  • @bvilleborn :)

  • @MrChiliman2 Don't be jealous because of the music. Be jealous because we actually had fun. There weren't as many fences, malls, laws. We actually did things. We didn't have internet and youtube so we partied hard and had fights and burned things, and blew things up. And people were healthier, not as fat and not as lazy. Ufortunately, everyone got old, except me. They all had kids, and "grew up". Twats.

  • @SenorCajones well said

  • @SenorCajones FUCK YEAH. That's how it was back in the day!

There isn't much in life that I miss as much as those days, either. I'd give ANYTHING I have to return to those days.

    FUCK the present. LOL

  • It was awesome being a teen in the 80's. We had the best movies, movies, everything. Times were just different in general with the way folks were etc. Lot simpler back then.

  • @staceyleah1 Tons more fun than now. TONS!

  • @staceyleah1 AWSOME!! 80s All the way. I love being an 80s girl!!

  • New-wave flavored muzak. Kind of a cool video, though.

  • I'm 15 and I love 80's music and I hate justin bieber!!

  • I know that my favorite music is not anybody else's favorite music but we all have a commonality in our musical tastes, that's why music clubs/bars are so popular. but what about the nostalgic music of not new, of not popular, of Avant-garde, or pushing the norm. We need to make a collection of shared favorites that we can collectively add to and expect responses to to make a better utopian society. Hey that reminds me of has anybody heard of Todd Rungren's Utopia?

  • I could see Gwen Stefani remaking this song but noone could ever duplicate this original I love the Motels and always will. Martha Davis was a great vocalist. Big up 80's.

  • the woman singing is absolutely gorgeous--she resembles my first Love....Yvonne Irene----

  • 14 PESSOAS GOSTAM DE FUNK

  • The Big 80s !!

  • Such a good thought!

  • Anyone notice a smilarity here between this video and Madonna's "Bad Girl" video?

  • @Ribelin2000 Good observation. There are some similarities between the two vids.

  • sigh.....The 80's......

  • Only Baloney can Spray

    #OWS

  • the 80's with these ageless art pieces are becoming more nostalgic at every visit. just can't get enough of these.

  • @vseae15o Amen! Mtv was cool back then.

  • @vseae15o doesn't it make you feel old?

  • I LOVED THE 80S AND THE MUSIC THAT CAME OUT OF IT

  • THUMBS UP IF YOU HEAR THIS ON GTA VCS radio Emotion 98.3 :D

  • When the director told the group all his ideas for the video, Martha Davis' comment was "I didn't understand a word you just said".

  • great!!!!!

  • PERFECT pop song.

    Always will be.

  • @XfuckyouX24 fuck yeah, i fuckin love this motherfucking song to. fuck, did i leave any fucks out. fuck it.(why is fuck such a bad word)

  • @MrBellender Fuck is one of the most versatile words in the English language.

  • hay que padrisima cancion,,todavia recuerdo cuando la escuchaba en la secundaria en los años 80s,,wow q recuerdos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • What a privilege to live in the 1980's ...

  • @TheFallToRise damn right ! :-)

  • @TheFallToRise yes, but don't overly romanticize the 80s. nowadays we're payin' for the excesses back then.

  • @TheFallToRise We didn't think so back then and couldn't wait for the 90's to see what the future held. And then it went to hell quickly. So yes! It was more than a privilege... it was an honor to come from the MTV video age. Movies like Back To The Future didn't hurt either.

  • Heard this on the radio last night...and forgot who sang it!...Was killing me finding it, but finally "Google" helped me out!.....LOL...Thanks for the Vid!

  • Martha was a very gifted vocalist. (Excellent band, too)...got a chance to see them back in the 80's...What a killer show!!!

  • thumbs way up for this classic from the 80's

  • The saxaphone makes this song.

  • One of the hottest performances of the 80s. She's all pouty and lonely. Very nice!

  • Fantastic song!

  • Did you know they play this over the PA system at Walmart. Make Walmart suck even more than usual.

  • 11 people are idiots

  • @howlingwolfntx64 Seriously; how did that many people find the energy to press the "dislike" button?

  • twoja stfara to dziwka jebac tom piosenke

  • Brian Glasscock @ 1:26 (sigh!)

  • My all time FAVORITE song of the 80'S!!!! ....AND BLADER Runner was my MOVIE(Harrison Ford)

  • My all time FAVORITE song of the 80'S!!!!

  • I believe the word is "Sultry". Martha was such a gorgeous woman, her voice and her looks harken back to a time when ladies had class and dignity. She is breathtaking in this video.

  • Martha Davis has a great voice

  • Martha Davis is red hot looking in her 40's hair and period dress with padded sauared shoulders.......smoking!

  • this is one of those beautiful little heart songs. i wonder how many of us guys, like this, but don't feel comfortable admitting to it.

  • The hollow guitar sound really projects the whole lonely feel of the song.

  • This song is awesome I remember watching my brother playing pop warner football back in the day Burbank Vikings he was a starter and a hard hitter I never saw him on the bench only he was injured and that was rarley!

  • my favorite and best karaoke song!

  • I always thought that the lyrics were "Only the lonely get laid."

  • @AB5L lol

  • @AB5L I used to parody that line out myself a few times, and even once in awhile to this day. A commenter a few months back also brought this up:-)

  • This song is how I feel in my life, this is what Im living through at this time.

  • Great song....and great video. I can't even listen to the radio anymore but I'll cruise through these 80 vids in a heartbeat.

  • Ubersexy @1:48

  • I've learned through time that it is not so much the sound of this song as it is the mood of it that moves my soul and makes me love it so much. I could sit in the most crowded room in the world and be blissfully happily playing this over and over in my mind in the corner lonely by myself. I think we've forgotten the beauty of being alone for a moment. Love is such a lonely game in the end anyway, nobody hates admitting losing is all.

  • They just don't make music like this anymore........

  • Previous to "Grand Theft Auto" Vive City", I knew this song when a buddy and myself snuck into an AMC theater, and this tune was played. Excellent tune; really sticks to the gut.

  • The Saxophone solo reminds me of Sade who I saw in concert recently in Seattle. Love the sax in music...it adds a touch of class! A shout out to all the single ladies out there! Only the Lonely can play : (

  • The Motels! This band should be on top of the world, they are so underrated.

  • THUMBS UP IF YOURE CLOSING YOUR EYES AND HOPING WHEN YOU OPEN THEM YOURE BACK IN THE 80'S

  • @sanman1757 I wish...

  • lmao.."only baloney..." cute.

  • Summer, 1982... I was 24 yrs old and had been half-way around the world (Europe), and always thought i'd see the other half someday...but 30 years later I ain't been outside Texas....but i still got this song.

  • @rowdymax1 this really struck me as I read it.... amazing how music always stays in the same place in your heart no matter how many years have passed? I bet you'll get to see the other half of the world :)

  • @vernavoo I meant "Vice City" not "Vive City". I agree that certain music is timeless; some songs remind you of people, some others remind you of moments.

  • @rowdymax1 You fucked up. You chose racist white insanity over Asia. Oh wait...

  • Arrgh! VEVO strikes again. Assholes

  • Won't load

  • I've loved this song since it first came out. The video is really nice too. And I love her hat! I just miss good music like this. The 80's was the last decade of good music all generations could listen to and enjoy together. Good memories.

  • God I hate VEVO. They destroy all music video

  • I fucking love 1930's songs and I'm only 1year old!!111!!!1!

  • I love this song and I'm 94 years old.

  • i love this song!

  • A fun song to sing. Gets ya right in the gut where the diagpram is.

  • This song makes the hair on my arms stand up. Such great memories...

  • @bearmassaro I totally agree with you. This was probably the greatest summer of my life and this song just added to it. It was a song that I waited up to hear. I was only 13 and had no idea of romance, but it still moved me.The other one was hearts, but I can't recall the guy's name now. Terrible video, but again a message, Hearts can change, etc.

  • @vaboxrboy "Hearts" was by Marty Balin of Jefferson Airplane fame. Hope that helps. :)

  • ME PREGUNTO PORQUE HAY GRUPOS QUE SE QUEDARON EN EL TIEMPO TENIENDO UNA BUENA MISTICA MUSICAL, LA MISTICA QUE A MI ME GUSTA.

  • Love 80's music..nothing compares to it. Music for the last 15 yrs or so doesn't have the same kind of soul, heart or meaning. Kinda sad...

  • Martha is hot !!!!

  • she has a great voice.

  • "you mention the time when we're together

so long ago well I don't remember all I know is it

    makes me feel good now...."

::sigh:: the story of my life....

  • Thumbs Me Up if your listening and loving this song in 2011 :3

  • @CBBCrazyBublegumBoom FUCK YOU!

  • @Pharenheitz WTF?!? Is wrong with you I mean seriously I post a comment a simple and unnegative comment and yet you reply it with F U wtf...

  • @CBBCrazyBublegumBoom To be honest, there's something unstable with my mind. I use the internet to vent rage at various moments of my life. I can't even recall what I said to you, but I'm sure it was as angry and bizarre as my other messages.

Why does this matter? I can't even say I feel anything right now. I'm not even aware of where my life is going, but people online will pay attention to my comments. I'm sorry.

  • @Pharenheitz It's difficult being honest with one's own mental capacity; hope things improve for you, since no one should live life in constant unhappy and terminal positions.

  • @Pharenheitz At least you're honest about it

  • I was only 10 years old when this song was released and it still tuggs at my heart. Fucking absolutely beautiful song!!!! masterpiece

  • i need a time machine,i need to go back to year 1982... i love this song.

  • @XfuckyouX24 should all us 14 yearolds start a club?

  • @XfuckyouX24 me 2 but im only 15 great song

  • @XfuckyouX24:: NICE!!! That is Awesome. I am 43 year old Mother of 3 & I like a lot of my daughter's hip hop music, & Vise Versa...They like songs from back when I was a teenager...Back in the 80's..Seems like yesterday. LOL

  • Comment removed

  • Right on, the 80's were awesome for music. I'm 35 and I love Bieber, Katy Perry, Kesha, etc....also

  • @XfuckyouX24 Congratu-fuckin'-lations. Did you want an award for 1,874,290th youngest listener?

  • @XfuckyouX24 you're still an idiot.

  • @XfuckyouX24 lol And....?

  • @XfuckyouX24 This song is timeless!!!! I was only 14 when this song came out...LOL....younger maybe. Boy those were great times. I hope your teen years are as much fun as those.........

  • @SirBrackalot You lucky bastard.

  • @drewwilson1888 Check out Top Gun's Take my Breath away video; that's another classic from my teens years that I will never forget, and they wore it out, all day all night...LOL

  • @SirBrackalot The songs video?

  • @drewwilson1888 yeah, with her two toned hair...way, way, way , way way before her time. Now everyone is doing it, but, back then, she was the only one, then noone for years....at least not mainstream like....

  • @SirBrackalot Terri Nunn got that hot two-tone hair look from Blondie's Deborah Harry , who sports it on the covers of both the Plastic Letters and Parallel Lines albums (1978). Just saying.

  • @crapple009 I stand corrected...lol

  • @SirBrackalot :-)

  • @crapple009 I like Terri Nunn though, even if her early 1980's hair color was inspired by Deborah Harry:-). She loses originality points, but little else.
