  • Beyond pointless? What do you mean by that people.

Theo Jensen creates kinetic life form with such beauty...I might call them art

There are a lot of design principles and kinetic laws that can be easily transferred to

other engineering field such as mechatronics, robotic, and so on.

Besides, He really enjoys making it :D

  • ted rules

  • but its not living....

  • It's amazing how so many people can make such ignorant comments when confronted with genius. Jealousy? What, it has to justified? Why? Does everything need a productive function? Do songs need to be be justified? Do poems? It doesn't hurt anyone. He's not asking for your money or time or effort. As for why he calls them a life form, There is no agreed upon definition of life. You may have one but it no better than his. Presumtions can be limiting to understanding.

  • @skylinealley STFUUUUU

  • @igg73

    GTFOOOO

  • Can someone please explain to me: Why he is referring to them as living things? "Animals", "creatures" etc.- I don't understand the point he is trying to make.

  • Brilliant but a bit of a nutter at the same time

  • like is this serious?! life? herds? save their lives?! im so confused. what is the point of this? why do we want a piece of shit walking the beach that has no purpose. Its so fuckin stupid.

  • @TechnoJunkie20 'piece of shit' - you're obviously no engineer.

  • @1pa2ch obviously not. im 15. Piece of shit is far fetched. what i mean is, it has no purpose.. at all. what is the point of this. can you explain?..

  • @TechnoJunkie20 It hasn't got a purpose, it's just cool. It's like a skateboarding trick for an engineer. :)

  • @1pa2ch It makes sense. But why are they calling it a form of life? and a species? aha

  • @TechnoJunkie20 Well, the man is exaggerating a bit. But he'd like to think he has created a form of life. In a way, it's not so difficult thinking about those 'kinetic sculptures' as a very big, but low life form, capable of fleeing form the tide and protecting itself in storms. It's kind of an interesting thought experiment.

  • @1pa2ch I agree, its cool. But beyond pointless. Id call it a contraption over a life form. And its mid 2011, and iv yet to see one of these.. the man must of come to his senses.

  • @TechnoJunkie20 Why...? It's cool, that's enough justification... I know a lot of people who do much worse things in life, so basically just let him enjoy himself :)

  • @1pa2ch i guess so. i hope to see one so i can light it on fire.. aha

  • @TechnoJunkie20

    "But beyond pointless."

I said the same thing about computers in the 1970's

  • @steevum Lol. I understand that. But nobody is telling me the point to these, things. Only thing i see these doing is trampling people and being vandalized by other kids. (Not me) haha

  • how the fuck is that a "form of life" ?!?!?

  • Stephen Hawking can do that shit with Legos

  • He's created biomechanical prototype organisms out of basically bamboo and water sacs.

Cool. But the military will use that Rhino model to perfect bipedal wartanks. Every invention is a double-edged blade.

  • OH NO IT'S GOING TO KILL US ALL!

  • Absolutely amazing, you sir, have my respect.

  • 1:30 wait a minute how many bioshock refrences EVE-olution, new forms of life, the classical music, at first it seems like a revolution all happy but what will happen in the future?

  • future pollution

  • its funny how they call it evolution when a man designed it hahaha

  • @123blissforfree - "evolution" is simply the process by which something passes into a different stage of being, especially one more complex (look it up!). You're talking about a specific subclass of evolution called biological evolution, which *does* work ostensibly without human intervention. An artist's ability is often said (correctly) to "evolve" (i.e. "grow," "change"). Theo straddles the middle ground of the usage, being an evolving artist exploring the concept of biological evolution :)

  • y dose he keep calling this thing a animal

  • I'm so confused?

  • @Brianjp93 there plastic tubes just with like with some on going motion that never stops moving

  • I will go with CREATURES. They operate organically, are self sustaining, and have a rudimentary brain.

  • It is a bit weird for some to hear that he calls them creatures, but if you think about it, this is the way that he chooses to look at it because it is the inspiration for this things. If we don't think of them as creatures, then what are they? Technically, if this things can survive on their own without any maintenance, then they are creatures.

  • wow... dudes a genius...

  • What ever it is, this man is a genius!

  • A very very fine line between insanity and genius.

  • Ok, thats a strange way to look at it. They are machines.

  • he shuld call it bacteria or virus its just as stupid as one?

  • I think he is reffering to the sculptures as being alive because it is a part of the artistic manifestation. Perhaps the story he created around them is just as important to the artwork as the object itself, in the same manner Duchamp's notes are necessary in order to understand his "Bride stripped bare by her bachelors", and a part of it.

  • wow... he's a little nutty... they won't ever "learn" to live and walk alone in a herd... they won't evolve either LOL...

    but pretty cool engineering.

  • Uhm their not animals.......Their just a bunch of tubes! but i mean ya that's rilly cool!

  • thats so sick

  • What a waste... this guy seems like such a genius, I'm sure there is something much more productive he could be doing with his time and resources.

  • yeah they look cool but what purpose do they serve

  • @crankylobster None, it's art.

  • art with that much engineering should have purpose not just aesthetics

  • perfect for bothering sun bathers

  • who is he god? :O

  • what is this guy, is he a human?

  • I think they're great! Half art, half mechanical engineering.

  • what are the 11 numbers?

  • lmao set them free on the beach in herds

  • Wow, if the world were filled with people like you, this world would suck!

  • Why?

  • i was referring to "phantomasnera" who said that this guy is creepy and his idea's suck. i think the guy in this vid is awesome and his inventions are freaking awesome

  • Oh, okay. I didn't realize you were commenting on phantom's comment. I really like Jansen's sculptures too.

  • Oh wow...kinda poetic in a way

  • This is really cool and everything but he does realize that his inventions are not in fact literally ALIVE, right?

  • yeah in a few years it will be in the market...then they will have clothes too..then we would be hunting them for some purpose and here comes beach animal rights!

  • so true

  • holy crap. absolutley amazing!!

    thnx for posting.

  • WHERE'S YOU GOD NOW?!

  • I'm here muahahahaha...

  • NO! I AM here...

  • why is he referring to it as being living?

  • Those are very cool. But is there any practical purpose that this will accomplish?

  • Same could be said about many forms of 'life'

  • No. Art in itself usually does not accomplish much other than being cool.

  • It's a good design for simple, durable, tide-avoiding platforms. For whatever reason you would need those...

They are quite the feat of mechanical engineering.

  • bigup!!! great
