Who's that, you ask? It's Jake La Botz, one of the finest modern blues musicians alive, doing a bit part as a member of Blues Hammer. Dan Clowes, thank you for having a hilarious sense of irony, even in your ironic mockery of bad blues impersonators.
Fuck Blueshammer, it is bad music, although it is in a shitty bar. However, the opening act is the shit, are you kidding? I did hang out in a blues bar for a while that was almost as bad as this one. Glad I left! Good for its patrons, good for me.
@angryangora No, its not about "looking down on others". And even if it was, so what? Taken as a whole, this movie is about the otherworldliness of feeling alienated, disconnected, and unsure of one's place in the world. Maybe that's something you've never experienced or don't feel compassion for, I don't know. Dan Clowes offered the world a completely unique perspective with the comic that this movie is based upon, and it deserves respect, not contempt.
Pop culture can be vapid, but this movie's extreme contempt for average tastes is over the top. We are supposed to feel total contempt for that poor woman dancing to a catchy (if not "authentic") song. This movie is more about the joys of looking down on others than celebrating genuineness.
@angryangora the joys of looking down on others? have you seen this movie? the main characters are miserable. i don't feel contempt for the red head. i wanna bang her but unfortunately i can't relate to her. now if i was a sleazeball instead of being hung up on my over compensation for my poor social skills, i'd probably be bangin' her that night.
@angryangora I like the movie but I agree with you a 100 percent because I have encountered these kind of people many times who have this god awful smug and superiority complex.
@busessuck1 After looking at your YouTube channel (which I just subscribed to by the way) I honestly don't understand why you have to ask that question. Haven't you ever felt disheartened by the vapidity of turn-of-the-century American culture?
@busessuck1 funny you feel that way. i personally find this movie to be a comedic goldmine. it is in my top 5 movies of all time and my best friend and i quote from it on a daily basis. to each his own, i guess.

Hilarious...I had mistaken this for the blues and Buscemi's character provides the correct information. Wow, ragtime had not entered my thought at all. Got alot of learning to do. Also, the lead singer's strumming hand is interesting to take note of: has nothing to do with the actual riffs nor his fretting hand.
Omigod, I just noticed, in the 'Related / Suggestions' list over there ->> that there's a REAL band called Blues Hammer now?!?!! What a bunch of clueless tools; Do you think that they KNOW??
The obvious joke is that the white band is not authentic; but to be fair, white champions of "authenticity" in Blues perpetrate alot of nonsense about the genre as well. Google David Evans "Demythologizing the Blues" and see Allan Moore's "Rock: The Primary Text" for a debunking of some of the nonsense.
@swwaddell The joke isn't that they're white, it's that they suck. As you know, Blues isn't in the color of your skin, it's in the depth of your soul.
Also, @FUQRSOUL... EXACT same story, only with Creed.
I was just listenign to an old Jack White interview form 2005, and he was discussing being white and playing the blues and authenticity, and he mentioned Blueshammer. I wonder if it was in reference to this or something else...
I feel his suffereing here, many a music geek has been in this situation - last night at a shit club was one of many I've been in and it reminds you why you hardly ever leave the house x
No, no-- I'm sure everyone who posts here gets it. Yknow the irony of 4 rowdy white dudes singin' about "pickin cotton all day long" & "authentic down in the Delta blues".
The icing on the cake is seeing the clueless crowd ignore the real bluesman & cheer on the band.
I had a chic in a bar once say while "I Will Survive" was playing: "I love this song. It's my favorite song." I said yeah: "I saw an interview with Gloria Gaynor, yadda, yadda..." She said "Who's Gloria Gaynor?"
My husband's band opened for Three Doors Down a few years ago (right before Cryptonite became a hit)and this is EXACTLY what it was like! They were so horrible, but the entourage they brought with them from Mississippi (on their bus) was going insane for them. People were in shock at how much they sucked! They couldn't even play their instruments, and a month later they were the #1 band in America. Go ahead Jody, show 'em your ass!
I hate bar people, they are so gross! I have cried from laughing at this song, it is one of my favorite because it can make me laugh so hard. Look at the lead singer, he is trying so hard to bring to the people! I know how Enna feels while sitting staring at all of the losers in the bar and the cute guy looking at the hot chicks ass, what a scumbag. I am Blueshammer number 1 fan because how much they suck.
@tmpfan2 You really just have to find the right bar. I was the same way for a while until I started looking around. Now, I have found a nice Arcade bar and love it. It plays good music, has a good atmosphere and mostly good people. With anyplace you will run into assholes and problems but if you look hard enough you might be able to find a good bar.
Thanks for uploading this. Definitely my favorite scene from this film as it reminds me of every awkward conversation I've had with a woman when it comes to old-time music.
that's why I try to keep my music theory and history to myself. means nothing to women, %90 of the time. just makes you seem kind of like a pretentious ass.

You can be authentic singing blues in this day and age but when you are clearly not picking cotton all day then thats where the problem is
