  • Yes,thier early stuff is the best.

  • Claydes Smith went all "Wes Montgomery" on guitar. (... and that's a GOOD thing.) If you don't know what I'm talkin' about, ASK SOMEBODY.

  • @emmettk Yes. You're right. Claydes "Charles" Smith was influenced by Wes and he told that everytime. But he was also a comfortableand a prodigious musician in a lot of style (jazz, funk, rock, etc...). He died in june 2006 and he left us a really great musical heritage. His style must be teached in every music school all over the world.

    Peace be upon him

  • so this is where gang starr's jazz thing came from. i forgot kool and the gang did this

  • The REALLY good song is "I Remember John W.Coltrane". It's posted and somebody TALKED throughout the middle of the song. Someone PLEASE post it without talking!!! I wish I had it and knew how.

  • I have this album and it is killer!!!!!!

  • I love this group. I can choose basically any random song, and just let it play.

  • Hell yes .

  • got this album! Such a good find

  • gangstarr's jazz thing original is Les Fleurs by Ramsey Lewis @ slickfunker

  • @mobetta7 No, that's a different song called "Jazz music"

  • THis was a "B" side to the single, "Hollywood Swingers".

A true unsung contemporary jazz classic.

  • Classic shit...they don't make em like they used to. Grew up hearing this, glad moms and pops had taste.

  • This 6:08 version was on the B side of Hollywood swinging back in the early 70's and made a fan ever since!!!

  • K&TG.. those cats really held substance & what diversity jazz, funk r&b ballads & of course.. that slow jam thats still is a heart string puller..SUMMER MADNESS ruled from the 60's until the 80's just OUTSTANDING ...@veewee YOU GOT SOUL BROTHER!..keep em comin! Port

  • funky and smooth

  • that bass glides

  • damn. muscular as hell. today's artists dont know sh*t from shoe polish.

  • where did our musical genius go ? i miss the horns, sons...the horns of today are cold & silent...

  • @btinsley1

    dig that. . .

  • Dude....what the hell happened to Kool & The Gang? They were the funk kings for a hot minute...then the 1980's just murdered their whole creative spirit...or maybe i should say took them in another direction. Is it me or was there just a BIG dramatic shift in musical style between '78 and '82? It'a phenomenon actually. Some of the "shift" was attributed to record label pressures i guess.

  • @bigkingsha They chose to make money after the albums "Everybody's Dancing" and "The Force". I hated to see them go but because I love them and was happy for them. Like sending a child into the world. In the 70's I was telling everybody how big they were going to be. I could tell then. they were way ahead of their time.

  • never heard this one, but it still takes me back.

  • Sounds like a skit from Showbiz & A.G "runaway slave" lp...obviously Gang Starr!!

  • So darn HOTT!!!

  • Gettin back to my roots !

  • Love this song and this cd ! Thanks for posting it. Anyone know where i can get it?

  • @e14212 Try Rock and Soul 7th Avenue between 35th and 36th streets NYC. They have it in vinyl.

  • The music they made in the 80s has to be laughable to them compared to this stuff. They are the reasons i started playing trumpet in the 4th grade. 1976

  • GangStarr Sampled this one

  • this is their best album

  • Many folks have forfotten all about Kooland the Gans's early stuff like this.all Most know is the stuff like Celebration,Fresh etc.

  • Spike Mickens is not dead.Thank you,I'm from Jersey City.West,Smith and Woody are gone.

  • New York's own, so of course they were from Jersey City, LOL!

  • This is vicious

  • Kool and the Gang's early stuff was amazing!!!

  • @boombap73 In the mid 1990s I started buying their earlier stuff from the 1970s. I was blown away. Their commecial stuff I knew but their more jazzier stuff.......man!! LOL.

  • @boombap73 < Pretty much ANY song from Kool and the gang is legendary! They were years ahead of thier time!

  • This is my favorite cut. I really love this one. Kool & The Gang knew how to play their tails off on this jam.

  • Anyone know what happened to the members of this version of Kool and the Gang before they

got that lead singer and went all commercial?

I've got nothing against making money, but I remember when they changed to the disco sound

and it was the beginning of the end of real funk. Anybody?

  • Robert "Kool" Bell, Ronald Bell (aka "Khalis Bayyan"), George Brown and Dennis "D.T" Thomas are still performing as original KG members. Spike MIckens, Ricky West, and Charles Smith have passed on to a "Higher Plane".
