I think especially now with the economy as it is, people simply can't afford to buy quality fresh food. Obviously no one wakes up one day and chooses to become overweight or obese, so the problem here is at the source, the food industry. Also the addictive nature of chemical additives keeps us "hooked" on their fast, tasty, and cheap food products. The world would be a better place if companies and governments cared about consumers.
Sugar is a contributor, but it is NOT the main cause. I drink 1 can of soda a day, and I'm underweight. The main cause is lack of exercise. People, especially children, are now spending more time surfing the internet and playing video games and less time exercising. I spend about 30 minutes a day doing moderate exercise. Sure, I may not be in the best of shape, but I still feel really good every morning I wake up.
Exercise will only get you so far. The next time you run look at how many calories you burn. 30 minutes of moderate running will burn 450 or so calories. That's what you get in a medium McDonalds french fries or 3 canned Coca Colas. If you have the perseverance to run 3 hours a day then passing over junk food is nothing.
I got to call BS on the last part we eat 1/4 to 1/2 lbs of sugar a day. there is no way you can eat enough food unless you sit down and eat raw sugar to get 1/2 lbs sugar in 17 awake hrs in a day.
have you seen the 2010 statistics? everything is fuckin red lol

it seems to me that everyone feels justified offering opinions on this topic - as if they've made a careful & prolonged study of the subject.
I'd suggest reading the gary taubes book "Good Calories Bad Calories". It is an exhaustive and detailed analysis of the obesity and it's causes.
