I read that it was the Oseetians and the Abkhazians that wanted to be in Russia rather than Georgia; Georgia invaded because they did not like that; Russia fought off the Georgians......in that scenario, Russia is not the bad guy.... I could be wrong;

"Will the hot summer in the Caucasus become cold winter in Europe?"
Well, the cold winter did happen since Russia did shut down the gas to Europe!
Formally it was because Ukraine (at that time having a president who was a US puppet) closed the transit gas pipeline since it started to steal Russian gas destined to Europe. At that time Ukraine was refusing to accept the market price (European price) for the Russian gas (twice of what Ukraine was paying for decades).
Informally, I believe shutting down the gas was also a Russian warning to the NATO countries in Europe who supported CIA revolution in Georgia which installed a US puppet (M. Saakashvili), then these NATO European countries equipped and trained Georgian army and then finally they pushed Georgia into the war against Russia. Does anyone really think that Georgia would attack Russian peacekeepers on its own?
The Russian message was: "Do this again and you will freeze for a long time!"
@mac9876ab you know very well that Russia is dreaming to change saakashvili and invaid in georgia. can you plz explain to me why they could not do it. you know why? because saakashvili is men and medvedev is puupet who do every morning blow job to liliput putin. lol
The Future of European Union is Russia. The EU will never be as affective Russia in the regional strategy of peace in mid east and the southern European area!
Russia has always been on top of resources. Resources and military has always been Russias thing. Russia has never been really a powerfull wealth economy.
The EU can kick and squirm all it wants but even if it can reduce Russian energy influence in Europe and gain access to more of central asia 30+% of world gas resources are still actually in Russian territory so Russia will still win in the long run.
...................the never ending battle between russians and americans continues....................you can do it buy i can do it better than you....blah blah blah
im not defending russia, coz im not from russia myself, but shall i ask you, what about "the stupidiest man in the world" -Bush? Did he help the American economy to a very huge extent? as far as i remember, all those issues: Iraq war, Katrina hurricane etc werent that impressive. so stop telling all this stuff against russia if you've never lived there or even never been there before. You should probably better think about all the German "achievements" first of all.
How original. Interesting how the internet and indeed the vast majority of technological advances which depend on and enjoy, yet take for granted were conceived in part or in whole in the United States (and brought to you in Morocco through French conquest). But I'm sure you know that, as you've spent ever so much time in the West, right?
Isn't funny that country with 200 mln population, and 100% public literacy, is unable to build it's own economy, and can't offer anything to the world, except mineral resources, tanks, and empty ambitions:))
Point being: the natural resources are thanks to the planet, not thanks to the Russians. Their having found themselves atop minerals is pure luck and probably the only thing sustaining them. What luck indeed.
And don't be so quick to laugh. History has shown that if the American economy falls, the European economy follows. And economies are probably more interdependent now than ever.
...Goryross. You know nothing about Russia. Russsia is a powerful nation. You have been brain washed by CNN, BBC and Fox News. Think big, think critically and don just belie what you are told. Don be a looser... Read and think.
Fox and BBC are on completely opposite ends of the spectrum. So you'll excuse me if I can't help but see some truth to a common thread. Perhaps it's not the rest of the world that's being brainwashed.. LOL
I think that Russia was justified in repulsing the Georgian invasion of Ossetsya. Georgian troops entered that province contrary to international agreements and began a progrom against ethnic Russians there, who are the majority of the population. Russia had the right under a 1992 treaty to maintain the peace.
I think also it is a mistake to try to turn former Soviet states into missile bases against Russia. Russia will respond, and Russia has more on the ground there than we have.
The ethnic majority of Ossetia is Ossetian although many have been given Russian visas. Russia should show more restriant or they will prolongue there economic troubles even more.
Georgia has the right to missle defense if it wishes to pursue it.
And the Ossetians are pro-Russian, not pro-Georgian.
If you are saying that Russias need the expense of another cold war with America like they need another hole in the head, I agree with you. But if you are saying that they must bow down before American military pressure and accept it passively, I disagree profoundly.
As for Georgia having the right to missile defense, what you are saying is Russians have no defensive rights with it neighbours. What about Cuba? Cuba is where the US put her!
mc0558 you idito, it's doesn't exist such a nation like south osetians! Russia were giving russian pasports to these people months before this invasion!South Osethia is intergal part of Georgia and Russia has no right to attack inpependent Georgian State!!
Whatever its legal status, the majority of people in South Ossetya are demonstrated over and over again that they do not want to belong to Georgia. The situation is analogous to Kosovo, to which the Western states and NATO awarded the status of a sovereign state. Kosovo was undoubtedly Serbian, but a majority of the population wanted independence. Self-determination should determine what happens to South Ossetya too.
The West is not going to fight the Russian army for the same of Georgia!
Visas? Those are pasports, they are Russian citizens! And Russia's economic problem are no bigger then in other developed countries - no, I don't mean USA among them :-P
Georgia could want anything but USA has no money on it :-D
First of all, let's get our definitions right: as a matter of fact, Russia is not what is known as a "developed country." It is a "developing country," and formerly known as "second-world" (as opposed to "1st" or 3rd"), which referred largely communist countries. But the funny thing about this new nomenclature is that, to my knowledge, no communist countries have ever actually reached "developed" status. Unless someone can correct me.
The people of so-called S Ossetia are a mixture of pro-Georgian and pro-Russian supporters. So both country have legitimate claim to protecting their citizens. Setting aside the fact that "South Ossetia" is legally a part of Georgia. We remember Soviet invasion and occupation in 1921 and the reason stated by Bolshevik Russia - Protection of local Communists. Today, Russians are protecting ethnic Osetian "Russian Citizens" in historic region of the central Georgia.
I'm usually very critical of politicians, but there's just nothing bad I can say about Medvedev. His ideas just make sense, and I'm not surprised that he is a technocrat. He seems to support progressivism, and that's exactly what Russia needs right now.
Today the 3rd police officer has been killed in Georgia since the ceasefire and one 75 year old man. Russian soldiers assaulted a Georgian family yesterday to the extent that even Abkahz got astonished. If I were Saakashvili today I would have more than enough reason to start the war right now. I think nobody really cares about us and MAY THE GOD RETURN TO ALL OF YOU WHAT YOU WISH TO GEORGIA!!!
