I watched this when it first aired on TV. I had hysterics and was actually laughing until I couln't breathe. All I could think was "Why?" There are just some songs that should not have the "bluegrass treatment". I like Ricky Skaggs, Bruce Hornsby, and Jon Anderson version of the Rick James' song Superfreak. That was actually pretty good, but this was just terrible.
Actually this is awesome! Bluegrass is probably the most difficult genre of music to play or master. Plus this just shows Dave Lee Roth is versatile. You should check out bluegrass motorhead, ozzy, and metallica. Maybe I just enjoy a variety of music and respect musicians for wanting to try something different.
@fallenruins Bluegrass is technically challenging but jazz is more difficult to master than bluegrass because of the more complex harmony involved and rapid chord changes.
@dmoorefsmfn I grew up around bluegrass, and I play jazz. Jazz is indeed more technically complex, aint no doubting it, but I don't think its a fair comparison. Bluegrass actually values the simplicity of its tonal underpinnings, and generally doesn't like to be too showy. Sure theres some flashy improv, but its never meant to be anything more than good to listen to. Why compare?

I watched this when it first aired on TV. I had hysterics and was actually laughing until I couln't breathe. All I could think was "Why?" There are just some songs that should not have the "bluegrass treatment". I like Ricky Skaggs, Bruce Hornsby, and Jon Anderson version of the Rick James' song Superfreak. That was actually pretty good, but this was just terrible.

Actually this is awesome! Bluegrass is probably the most difficult genre of music to play or master. Plus this just shows Dave Lee Roth is versatile. You should check out bluegrass motorhead, ozzy, and metallica. Maybe I just enjoy a variety of music and respect musicians for wanting to try something different.

@fallenruins Bluegrass is technically challenging but jazz is more difficult to master than bluegrass because of the more complex harmony involved and rapid chord changes.

@dmoorefsmfn I grew up around bluegrass, and I play jazz. Jazz is indeed more technically complex, aint no doubting it, but I don't think its a fair comparison. Bluegrass actually values the simplicity of its tonal underpinnings, and generally doesn't like to be too showy. Sure theres some flashy improv, but its never meant to be anything more than good to listen to. Why compare?

This is not accurate and warranted comparison to another improved based genre of music. I too play bluegrass and have a Bachelors of Music in jazz performance. It takes serious dedication to learn the penny whistle well. But would it not be reasonable to comment on a post stating the penny whislte was the hardest instrument to play and master?

@fallenruins Most difficult genre of music to play? Exactly what do you base that statement on? I am pretty sure any good jazz musician could play bluegrass but I am not sure any good bluegrass player could play contemporary jazz. Of course all styles of music are hard to master in that sense that you have to be interested in that particular kind of music in order to develop that special wibe all music styles have. But, to single out bluegrass as particulary difficult is just rubbish!

Just because he is singing this song over the top of a bluegrass combo does not make David Lee Roth a bluegrass musician. You can like it if you want to. I think it is pretty cheesy myself.
