Raymond Baxter is one cool guy. From fighter pilot on the war to TV presenter in later days ...... if I can be 10% as erudite in my advanced years I'll be one happy bunny rabbit.
Just goes to show where we in the UK are now, we used to look to the future with great anticipation now we have had all that kicked out of us. The best we can do now is look back to how inovative we were, most TV now, like you say is about our past. There is nothing on now to even hold my interest for 5 mins. we've seen it all, there won't be another Raymond Baxter for sure.
Superb, and brings back fond memories. Baxter would test out anything,as would Michael Rodd later. This was classic TV, a science show, which was fun to watch. I liked the BBC symbol montage at the end, thanks for that.
this is the original theme 70s when they really new how to make good music, its got that feel good be bop sound which is rite on the money like a nut flush not like the 80s or shite 90s electronic mush they used as the intro/ never undastand why they ad to balls it up in later incantations/ cant help myself rockin to this thou) luv it
John Dankworths theme was pure quality - i never know why they change from something extraordinarily good to some bland 90s theme which is just plain awful.
Actually, that picture of Raymond Baxter (from 2:16 to 2:20) is from the BBC show, The Goodies (Episode #53, "It Might As Well Be String," October 19, 1976) .
The man was a legend. Such a beautiful, mellifluous and authorative voice. And he flew Spitfires! How cool is that? RIP Raymond and John Dankworth. God bless.
...and Baxter would not survive on TV today. The audience is far too dumb for his concise, precise delivery and the intellectual and scientific content is far beyond most school-leavers of the '00s
Why am I watching this??? Sitting at home, quiet drawing room, slightly bored. I put a sledge hammer through our TV a couple of years ago. Basically I don't like the way they do TV now, it's too disingenuous, mean nasty. Pricks like Sugar, the Dragon's Den "people" even at the other end of the spectrum Paxman is a bit too sneery.
I sat there and though, if I had the TV back who would typify the sort of person I'd like to watch right now?
@brucesterman You're not wrong. I gave up TV in '97, and haven't missed seeing anything except for Newsnight (excellent if you forgot to buy a newspaper!).
Yes, Raymond Baxter, Patrick Moore, etc., were more affable and watchable than the dolts who aspire to 'shock' us now. Yawns.
I think I once saw Raymond Baxter in drag, performing Noel Coward's 'I went to a marvelous party' - or am I imagining that?

Spot Pink Floyd with Syd Barrett at 1:28.

Raymond Baxter, he'd make a good first choice.
