wonder what little red would look like on camera if he suddenly began showing his hood, well that is if he can spread a hood like other cobras? cool red spitter though
i want a red spitter there my fav snakes i'm only 11 though so i'm not ready for cobras especially not spitting ones but i have and eyelash viper and a green mamba there well behaved and nice, you may think i'm retarded and stupid but i handle them with no protection because i live like 1 block away from a hospital that has anti-venom i took my snakes in and they milked em. well not sure if the hospital did maybe a snake expert did but they got anti-venom. your snake is beautiful thx 4 vid
I love your red spitting cobra, one of the most beautiful ones I've ever seen. I really like watching your videos because I myself have a collection of snakes ( ball python morphs/normals) and I get ideas from how you care for your snakes.
I like red so much that I sent you another email right when you lifted him out of the sand stuff with the hook.. great question to talk about for a min i think :P
I think Red died of "food poisoning" I think he got a bad mouse. I was talking to a well respected venomous snake Vet about it. If mice are killed, frozen, thawed, then refrozen, thawed and fed they can grow bugs inside that produce toxins. That batch I got from my supplier had that happen to it. I'm so sure about it I threw out that batch of mice.
Spitting cobras are the "best" snake at taking down mongooses. Is it true elapids have a venom gland that alows them to continue to make venom like our saliva glands?
The best snake at repelling mongooses maybe...I doubt there are many spitting cobra's short of Naja Ashe that could "take them down" as you say. Constrictors will eat mongooses however, so technically they are the best at what you claim.
if you want to find a good starter for venomous, keep a wild caught coachwhip for about 2 weeks at least, and if you don't get bit your doing alright.
I see how you handle the snakes, with the hook and all, but what kind of cage do you put them in when you're scrubbing their normal one? What substrate do you use?
They go into a large rubbermaid bin or a small plastic garbage can. I use 3 different kinds of cages: Vision, Precision, and Barr. I use a natural forest like bark substrate (Zoomed) I think and a finely crushed walnut for the desert species.
Maybe i should re-word the question, into "what would you reccomend as a docile, and genrally easy going snake, with little capacity to kill through venom alone?"
and also, i ask, if the spitting cobras, are more tendant to spit that bite. because if i was wearing a visor, or face guard, that would be much more welcome than a bite.
thanks for another great and informative vid. I'd like to ask a few questions if i may.
i notice that some of the snakes get very close to the camera at times, and was wondering if it is hand held, or on some type of holder.
also, would you say that a spitting cobra is a good "starter" elapid, becuase of their comparitivly "mild" venom, and tendancy to spit rather than bite.
It's hand held by the battery at the back of the camera. There are NO good starter venomous snakes, period. Many people who keep spitters become allergic to snake venom. That's any snake venom. Anaphylaxis can kill you faster than even an inland Taipan bite.
Thanks for the reply, and i understand that they all can kill me, even my hoggie(H.nasicus) , or mock viper (P.pulverulentus). However, to be honest, if i had just been bitten by O.hannah,or O.microlepidotus (touch wood) the last thing on my mind would be anaphylaxis lol
But, over the next few years, i will be getting into "HOT" snakes, slowly and one day i hope to have a collection as healthy, and vairing as yours.
How do you give your snakes such a broad variety of food, I mean how do you manage to get them to eat chicks, quail, rodents, etc? It seems fairly difficult but I want to know from experienced keepers such as yourself.
By lots of work!! I try to give my specimens personal care and attention. I offer them a variety of food items to promote good health and something "special" for lack of a better word. Despite my best efforts, sometimes they like somethings more than others but I try them on anything they might eat in the wild. As long as it's been frozen and "mostly" free of parasites.
It couldn't have been fun for you, but I laughed when he tried to climb on the camera. Seems like the venomous no-leggers love cameras as much as their constrictor friends do. I usually end up getting blurry photographs of corn snake belly.
And did I mention how much I love your videos already? Cute snakes and an education. Better than regular TV.
Thanks you very much. I try hard to show people what it's really like to keep these fantastic animals. I really try to control my reactions when they climb on the camera. A bad reaction by me, could bring a worse reaction by them. The bottom line is whatever happens, it my fault. The animal is reacting like they should, wild.
