  • great song

  • en mi caso escuche primero este disco que Exile y siempre me gusto este tema, muy bien arreglado, el riff inicial de keith, el bajo de keith, el slide de taylor y la voz oscura de Mick.

    2 palabras: im presionante !!!

my case flisten this album before Exile and I always liked, like this song, very well arranged, the initial riff Keith keith on bass, the slide of taylor and the dark voice of Mick- sorry by inglish

  • If the Stones are involved ( esp. Keith Richards ) this song is about Drugs - D

  • Sorry correction..... "Sympathy For the Devil" part 2

  • This was originally named....Sympathy to the Devil 2.....

  • first Rolling Stone song I've ever listened to! LOVE IT!

  • I thought I was the only one who loves this song. great album!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • about a year ago (when i started to get extremely hooked on the Stones), if you asked me about Goat's Head Soup and songs like this and Coming Down Again, i would have said, "what the hell is Goats Head Soup?!" Now i've started listening to some of the songs on this album, and now i know the true beauty behind this masterpiece.

  • @beantownbig3 This album is fine by most people's standards but neither it or 'It's Only Rock and Roll' are a patch on Sticky Fingers and Exile On Main Street. After Black and Blue was the beginning of the end for Stones' classic music for me

  • It's like a hip shaking white line fever history lesson from the 70's

  • you mean dancing with mr devil

  • I am 24 now and I have discovered The Rolling Stones in 1992 when I was 4 or 5 when spending my pocket money on vinyl, which back then in the age of the CD and cassette, records were dead cheap. I noticed a Goats Head Soup LP complete with posters and a hardly used record. How much did I spend? £2! £2 for musical Excellence!

  • i just love that riff :)

  • Lol I was just on a retarded website that was calling The Stones Devil worshippers because of this and Sympathy For The Devil...WTF?

  • Rock: It's Your Decision said this song was Satanist. Yeah, it's one of *those* movies.

  • Relatively poor album after Exile On Main Street ; the beginning of a slow end to their album career ; last very good album was Black and Blue in '76

  • @TheKenfig

    Some Girls was pretty good.

  • @MrBluesrules As many many fans and critics think, but not my cup of tea much

  • @TheKenfig Slow end doesn't last for 30 something years. I wish a lot of other musicians suffered similar lot.

This slow "dying" turned out to be a very dramatic time for the band that made most of their fame and money since then. I was following their career since early 70's, not turning death ear on other musical trends. I might be subjective, but objectivity stems from facts and not presumptions. Such is the natiure of formal logic. B&B is/WAS their superb album, though underrated heavily.

  • @suprainversus Well, I write 'end' becuase they have not officially ended have they. All the same, I dont care how much money they made after this ; their fame and importance as artists was sealed before this and their image and credibility decreased gradually afterwards ; their cutting edge. I don't even know their last God knows how many albums after 1981. What is B&B ??

  • @TheKenfig Thanks for your message. Opinion counts anyways. I don't want to sway you. Suggestion: check out the artistic entourage of Rolling Stones biography, etc. if you want to weld your POV. B&B is Black and Blue, released in 1976, as you might know. Thanks again for writing. But in my sincere view, analyzing decline of thousands of bands in rock history, the Rolling Stones with helt all possible expectations of the noun "decline." This was all meant for sharing.

  • @suprainversus Oh my God, how dumb am I ?? Of course it is ! . I actually like Black & Blue very much and I like quite a bit of I.O.RnR too, but AFTER B&B they went kind of cosy musically for me and had lost their kind of 'subversive' aspect integral to them. Didn't like Some Girls. I felt it was now showbizzy, establishment and more conformist superstar image

  • criticising the criticists, You Sir, deserve critical acclaim. Bravo.

  • Excelente disco, llevaba años sin escucharlo bien por los Stones !!

  • mick taylor on bass...

  • They should have called the album Red Stripe - another great Jamaican tradition.

  • radio stations should play this song more often at halloween

  • 37 years ago today i got this album from Santa. Great man Santa.

  • @demonsbutterfly Great those memories eh ?. I remeber in 1971 getting the new 'Meddle' album by Pink Floyd I wanted from Santa !

  • The "will it be slow or will it be fast ... (etc.) " nails Mr D as 'Death' but the reference to Mrs. D seems strange ...

  • @amenhop Mr (or Mrs) D is the Devil, not Death.

  • @amenhop not if you see it as a person it could be Anita Pallenberg or one of Mick lovers.

  • @amenhop mr d is the devil... just listen to the chorus it says lord keep your hand off of me. alot of rock stars worshiped the devil i.e. jimmy page

  • @amenhop Sometimes Death is reffered as a lady maybe thats why

  • The BESTEST from "goats head soup", too bad the piece of shit dj's never gave this INCREDIBLE tune the airtime that other lesser songs from the lp got! ;o)

  • @genxxxersize sssh quiet you!...you're ears aren't good enough for this music so go off and listen to justin bieber or something, got it?

  • mr. d is david bowie

  • evil 666

  • @jdlover202 - Mr D is death. Not the devil, not drugs.

  • @jdlover202 - Mr D is death.

  • This is the jam!!

  • @MerseySky Winter is one of there best songs

  • good shit

  • Comment removed

  • that's DOCTOR D to you, Micky.

  • It's about Keith dancing with death and his heroin addiction...not the devil. i am assuming. it's all about interpretation. but i cant imagine any situation where it would be about David Bowie or Neil Diamond or Howard Dean

  • @livewirevirginia Mr. D figures in underground black slang, like, he had it made but messed it up himself -- Mr. D, the devil inside

  • @neverindoubt well, whatever it is, its just artistic expression, i suppose, and im christian but still am able to listen to this without any problems. so i guess, my/our interpretation is just our opinion anyways

  • umm i thought it was mr d the devil go figure goats head soup i never herd it was about david bowie can someone give me some documents i love to see it

  • Mr. "D" was David Bowie. I'm so old that I remember. Bowie's lady is mentioned in the song as well.

  • its in reference to robert johnson making a pact whith the devil mr d is the devil

  • Dance with Keith and Mr D (demerol).

  • @olhapful Mr. D was David Bowie as it was well documented. Great song.

  • mmmm tasty.....

  • Allways thought this was one of the Stones better albums. This was my first Stones album, yeah Im old, so what. This album never got the credit it should of. Guess it was comercial enogh for radio! Good to hear it again . Thanks

  • @hicknan219 I think the Stones were just vitctims of their own greatness. The album prior to Goat was Exhile on Main St (greatest album of all time), at least IMO. Hard to live up to the raw power, and musical genious Exhile exhibited.

GHS though is surely an underrated album. Mick Taylor laid some sick riffs down too,,,

  • Im a huge Stones fan and really really tried to like Goats Head, Its Only Rock n Roll, and Black n Blue...but the trio of these mid-70's albums never clicked for me. I wouldn't ever call them terrible, and I do like some of the songs on all 3..but they seemed to be in a rut during this period. Maybe too many drugs? Or maybe just brunt out from the previous 4 AMAZING rock records and the huge early 70's tours...Anyway, The Stones are still the best ever and Ill try to listen to Goat Head again :)

  • @mikekinney288 Then your not really a stones fan because goats head,it's only rockand roll ,sticky fingersand black and blue are there 4 best alblums ever

  • @spahnman you totally left out tattoo you...i think that one is right up there with sticky fingers, goats head and exile

  • great sound

  • Wicked!! I Love it

  • great song

  • I was a idiot , i had this poster, But my family told me it was to GROSS for the houshold. and i gave it to my friend, now i relaize how rare that poster was....so...my only comment for that was.. FUUUUUCKK . Other then that...love this album, always will, rock on.

  • @punksouth123

I have that poster... I hung it on my door in college. I probably freaked everyone out!!!

  • @punksouth123 had the same one,,,,feel the same way,,,,i love this album

  • @punksouth123 lol :D

  • this album was too kitschy satan for its own good. but i love this jam.

  • Anybody know who the actual women were --the "postcards" that were released with this album (I think) not the Stones in drag but th others?

  • im scared

  • I never really noticed how busy the bass line is during the first verse, that must be Keith playing bass on this one. Killer groove on Dancin' With Mr. D

  • @TheDragonCult Good ears, but I read it was Mick Taylor on bass.

  • mmmm must be LUNCH

  • fuck the critics, they very seldom know what they like. they always just try to give very obvious, blunt descriptions as to not be told that their opinions are 'wrong'

  • Great song by the Stones...forgotten and buried in the past. I love this song and always have. What year is this?????????????

  • @responare 1973

  • everyone knows that mr d is the devil right and the goat is one of the symbols of satanism

  • Brilliant....The Stones last truly great album.

Oh whell....after this they began to earn some serious $ though.

  • @PAULLONDEN I'm glad you saved me the trouble of saying that. Such talk generally gets me the "you left it in the 60s" leer. I think Mick Taylor provided them with some major mojo. I often wonder what would have transpired if Steve Marriott had gotten the nod later on.

  • Oh whell...got to Arabia,and fuck some goats then........just kidding ;]

  • @scalihoo62 Peta's after you now.

  • Mr. D is none other than the notorious "Dubya" (W). Har har.

  • @quintincollins "mr. d" is death.

  • I remember feeling that the Stones had sold out.

  • I remember listening to this as I flew my Kate into Pearl Harbor...

    :::roll eyes:::

  • FUCCKKK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!

  • SUCK MY COCK! YOUR GAY! FILHO DA PUTA!

  • I rmeber my grand paerents litening to this while they made voo=-doo dolls in Prt au prince haiti

  • why does evryone think that "the antichrist" is a person?...read it again.

  • I really love this track-aint heard it in yonks, Glad I remebered this tune....

    Black n Blue's a good album too-Hmmmm- be next i think :-)

  • so you don't think david bowie is the devil?

  • Yep, Mister D is not the devil....fabledmabel nailed the answer to this perfectly. Great Time & Era To have Grown up During-I Should Know !!! 5 Starz!!

  • Well The Stones make better looking women than the Monty Python guys. That's a scary thought.

  • I'm 3 kind's of sideways , move like you've never seen, got the grind just baby, .. drip off-a me, move to the left, then move to the right ,move.. like, I ,like, ...according to me.

Fire and brimstone keep your hand off-a me

  • is mr.d the devil?

  • Haha Bill Perks!!!!!!!!!!!! devil on bass

  • who else would he flippin be?

  • Death

  • i beleave it was pt 2 of sympthy- still great words to the song - what will it be slow or fast .... YOUR DEATH

  • yep he sure is

  • Death

  • "Mr. D." was, according to Mick Jagger, David Bowie.

  • Yeah, I heard that too, AND, 'Angie' was about Angie(DUH, of course!!-lol) Who was Bowie's girlfriend or wife or something like that.

    :-//

  • @jdlover202 No, drugs.

  • @jdlover202 i always thought it was the devil because in the lyrics he said "Lord have mercy FIRE and brimstone i was dancing with mr.D.

  • @imaRoLLingStonzFan i think the fact that he asks the lord for mercy at that point shows it is about death..if he was freely worshipping the devil as many think, he wouldnt be saying that. just my opinion

  • Comment removed

  • @livewirevirginia

oh no i didn`t mean he was >worshiping< the devil!!

i just meant i thought it was just supposed to be spooky!! but i agree with you now that i listen to it more.

  • @imaRoLLingStonzFan hmm yeahh. i think maybe its a combination. the devil AND death..like fear of hell maybe

  • @livewirevirginia Yes exactly!!

  • @livewirevirginia Plenty of people openly worship the devil, take Jimmy Page for instance, he openly did it, even bought "the worlds most evil mans" house so he can play with it. I mean, it could mean Death, it could very well also mean the Devil. But who cares, it makes for good music right? I could care less if he worships the devil, that's his personal choice, I just like their music. There's always going to be bible thumpers who will put down every form of media that's not "Christian"

  • @GotThe89Vision well, pagey was little different. he was into occult and stuff, and he did do that stuff with aleister crowleys house. but he wasnt like those satanic posers you see in heavy metal today. it wasnt so much devil worshipping as interest in it and "do what thou wilt." the stairway stuff is a bunch of bs i think and it has a lot of deist references

  • @livewirevirginia nah stairways real man, I played it backwards myself, shit's scary what they say in it. But i mean, it's like opposites, where theres a stairway to heaven theres a broken elevator to hell. But Jimmy was blamed for the deaths of Jon and I think Robert Plants kid because of his obsession. The kids in heavy metal do it because they think it's something cool to do and don't know what they're fuckin with. Which is why they fight the air.

  • @GotThe89Vision ive heard it too...it doesnt seem like a coincidence, admittedly, but i mean, the amount of concentration it would take to make that message is unbelievable, plus, as robert plant said, the song was made with the best intention, and focusing on subliminal messages isnt their idea of making music. i believe robert plant, but i could easily be wrong and with john -- jimmy went a little crazy with the drugs after about 1975, and he just brought bonzo with him. really sad stuff

  • @livewirevirginia Well, the people making the music can have the "best intentions" but they're mere puppets in Satans presence, when you summon a power such as that, you have no real control, I mean just look at cats like Lil Wayne, and a bunch others I don't feel like bringing up. They're clearly pawns, who hold great influence over the people, and rake in massive amounts of money. many songs backwards are fuckin' creepy. Like in "lil waynes I feel like dying" saying I'm the god beneath you

  • @GotThe89Vision well, i dont believe in that witchcraft stuff personally, i think pagey was interested in "do what thou wilt" and i think that all these other guys, like lil wayne, are posers trying to look hard. but the reason this discussion started, are the stones satanic? personally, i think theyre not. this song, for me, was about death, and sympathy for the devil was about humanity. the great think about art is that it represents what you want it to represent.

  • @livewirevirginia Well doing what thou wilt is a saying from satanists way back who want to drink all the alcohol they can handle and fuck every girl they can find. God wants us to live a much simpler, better life. I love the stones I won't lie, but are they satanic? I don't know, they have alot of satanic representation, but it could be for attention. That and they seem pretty immortal lol. I believe in God and the devil because I've walked on both sides, Gods side is just more comforting

  • @GotThe89Vision i agree..many who worship the devil are trying to free themselves, but submit themselves totally before satan, so they arent doing themselves any good. an all forgiving, unconditionally loving god just makes more sense. the stones, though...they dont have any particularly satanic songs, this one would probably be the worst of them all, but it might not even be about satan, we cant judge their artwork

  • @GotThe89Vision satanism has a lot to do with wanting to separate oneself from what has come before or exists presently, and in this sense is very anarchistic. "do as thou wilt" is not necessarily as depraved as you interpret it to be here. it could be, for example, civil disobedience. actions defined by a code different from the accepted or currently practiced one. as to the message of the bible about lifestyle: it's so contradictory that it could be saying fuck every girl you can find.

  • @inkblackRose

so its simply living free, without any rules besides the ones set by your own personal code, the only reason people call doing whatever you want "depraved" is because they make it "depraved", even though its just a word thats definition is only based on what you want it to mean. so the run down is, right and wrong do not exist in the real world, right and wrong is what you want them to be.

  • @Mikkael365 I encourage you and your neighbors to live without any rules and don't forget to tell them that right or wrong doesn't exist in this world. It will be very helpful to tangle your life in perpetual conflicts. Yours is the most enlightening reflection on freedom, I will post it on the door of the nearest bank and it will be robbed tomorrow. Give it to politicians today and you will scrape the ashes of the nuclear world the next day.

  • @suprainversus

the problem with this is stupid people. you can't just straight up give stupid people this information, cause either it'll come back to kick yuo in the ass, or you'll have wasted yuor time because they all think your crazy now. now you and me both need to watch what we say and who to say it to, cause everything has a consequence, good or bad.

  • choosing to experience the dark energy, and choosing to enjoy IT... Most are resisting IT.

  • Was this Mick Taylor or Wood?

  • Mick Taylor on bass and lead on the album. Check out the live '73 version on the Brussels Affair CD, Taylor rips amazing solos on them.

  • @Dunkleosteus9 Wood wasn't even in the picture NOT EVEN CLOSE !!!

  • U know who Mr. D is , I hope?

  • reference to Drug addiction, is it not??

  • get rid of capitalism, they are liars, god bless the stones, its like they say, every cop is a criminal...

  • in this song i don't like the drumming ! it's very orrible !

  • i think the Goats head soup album was well underated considering it had tracks like hundred years ago and this superb track about ole lucifer himself.

  • What a sleazy riff on this song.... Keef gives great sinister, no? The piano adds a further edge & MJ's vocal is suitably anguished.

  • The opening riff sounds great.

  • @originaldivinylsfan Keef isn't playing lead on this, Mick Taylor is.

  • Mick & the boys watching the Exorcist

    cool tune -thanx for posting

  • it is about keiths heroin addiction .......dancing with death.

  • the stones at their most sinister...

  • One of the Stones most underrated songs.

  • Mr. and Mrs. D are Such a lovely couple, wow! Let's bring them back to life!!

  • been looking at this comment for four months, and it's really freakin bizzare

  • I love this song. Sometimes i wander if he's talking about Mr. DEVIL or Mr. DEATH. They do make songs about both characters.

  • the devil, no doubt.

  • Yes! Dancing with Mr.D!! The Stones at their finest!

  • "...hidin in a corner in New York City,

Lookin down a .44 in West Virginey..."

    Brilliant

  • i really don't fucking get it, this is a great song but the critics hated it and they managed to wipe it off the face of the planet. I hope it gets discovered in time.

  • @MidnightRambler444 Sorry to be so blunt. But critics are like assholes, everyone has one. If I had listened to critics years ago, I wouldn't have found the great songs that are just sitting out there waiting to be listened to. And there are millions of great songs that critics have knocked. What makes their opinions any better than anyone else's? Nothing. Go by your gut feeling. Screw critics.

  • @maximum1954 1973 !!!! Goats Head Soup Album I think one of the best Albums

  • @maximum1954 I agree and disagree at the same time. Music critics tend to be very experienced listeners of all kinds and types of music. Their opinion may be no better than any others, but it is more informed. On the other hand, critics take an intellectual approach to listening that isn't really warranted. A good ear for music does not necessarily require the soundest intellect.

  • @flockofseagulls87 SOME are ; many others are spotty nerd kids who are verbose and more concerned with seeming clever with words and have not had a great deal of experience at all

  • @maximum1954 heck ya!!!! im 21 and everyone says i should be listening to gaga and the new age crap but i prefer to rock it to this good stuff right here!!!! SCREW THE CRITICS!!!! \m/ ROCK ON!!!! \m/

  • @GothMetalhead999 ......... dig your scope !!!

  • @maximum1954 You hit the nail on the head! Everyone must judge for themselves.

  • @MidnightRambler444 I agree, I'm in my 40's and this came out when I was really young and it was always one of my favorites that got better when I got older and began to appreciate the lyrics and how well they fit with the music. I never used to hear this on the radio, but lately I've started hearing it fairly frequently. Perhaps it will make a comeback.

  • @MidnightRambler444 yeah but those same critics also panned Exile when it came out! Fuck those critic fucks!

  • @MidnightRambler444 the critics may not like it, but the fans do. and that's all that matters. XD

  • @MidnightRambler444 WHO THE FUCK DO YOU THINK MR. D IS HMMM CAUSE IT SURE AS HELL AINT NEIL DIMAND

  • @VIOLENTJ111

I thought it was Howard Dean.

  • @MidnightRambler444

Well, the Stones kept rocking for ages after those "critics" were long forgotten. Long Live the Stones, and their music.

Listen to that scream at 2:16!
