If given good reasons for learning and thinking (other than adults know best) they will seek a balance through their need. When parents complained that their journals had misspelled words in them; the students came up with teaching spelling through typing (data entry keyboarding). That was brilliant. Yes they need guidance/choices/some control. All learning is interrelated that is a given.

But it was the students in my classes that were showing me the basic
reasoning behind what I now call spherical thinking. Thinking that considers
the full totality of a problem. Then examining probable solutions selects one
and proceeds to develop pathways from the solution to the intentional action.
It is the way children think. Schools train the students away from that type
of thinking.
