  • Yeah! The less Flash a page has embedded, the better!

    Gives us open video!

  • I wanna ogg too!

  • check out the newest post on my blog for a follow up!

  • i want too

  • go to my blog and look at the newest post for a follow up on the debate =]

  • Support for Theora is growing. The experimental versions (which have numerous bug fixes) are nearly consistent or better quality than current YouTube encodings. Mozilla did a test comparing the 2.

But its not just FF that supports open video... its every browser BUT IE8 (you need a plugin <- irony).

iPhone can't run flash... this is a format thats GREAT for everyone... it's just going to get better with time because the encoder is open source too.

It would also save YouTube alot of cash.

  • oyu should check out my blog and share the latest post =]

  • I think the web will be better off for it, even if there are some losses made in the cash flow of these web companies.

  • I think the fact of the matter is, that google have weighed these concerns, and are going with h.264. And the fact is, this is YOUTUBE. we are going to end up having to support h.264, in one form or another, the only real problem is the costs.

  • it was the url, i've changed it, i'm sure you can work it out.

  • I was referring to this:

    reddit / tb/ 8scz7

Also, have you conducted any testing of your own in the case of Theora vs. h.264, as I am finding it far more efficient and in my research, far more supported. Also, add that to the fact that I am an iPhone developer, I am heavily swayed. You need to bear in mind, support is a huge concern.

  • Looks like this has turned into a general debate about ogg theora and those don't usually go anywhere, but i'm still happy to continue this off of YouTube. Find the link to my Google Profile on my channel page if you'd like to continue discussing this over email, IM, or some other site

  • This was always my point. i was looking for an intelligent discussion on the subject of theora vs h.264, the amount you talk about "open video" it's like it's a forgone conclusion, we should be going that way, which I object to.

  • Well then the problem is that this video simply wasn't created for that. It is supposed to be a conclusion, aimed towards those who already support open media formats (since my blog and YT viewership are mostly free software people). The video lacks substance and content, i know, but it's not supposed to be a discussion on why. Perhaps i'll make another video for that

  • hey i just made a blog post about the debate-- check it out for me =] i'd love some constructive criticism from your point of view

  • WHAT THE HELL, WHY DO THOSE ONES POST?

  • Right fuck this, I keep trying to post the same thing, and it won't post.

  • What the fucking hell. My comments aren't being posted.

    Test.

  • I was having the same problem. Make sure you don't include any URL's or special characters.

  • I like how little you obviously know.

  • I like how you post shit with nothing to back it up, not that i can expect much more from a YouTube comment. You're like everyone on Digg that posts snide one-liners with no explanation. Feel free to come back if you ever have something actually worth sharing

  • it's common sense. Don't ask me to analyze this carefully, I don't have time. But either you're a horrible public speaker, and I don't even want to be right on this case, if you're this horrible, or you know very little and are reciting things you've read.

  • "common sense" my ass. if you can't back shit up, don't say it. You might have a point, but if you can't/won't back it up then don't bother stating it. I think the problem is i'm new to YouTube and making videos and i'm trying to break things down for less geeky people to understand. If you're saying something else, you're gonna have to back it up.

  • No-one non geeky is going to watch this. I was looking for something backing up ogg's codecs, over h.264, as I was doing some research on the subject. Instead I found this drivel, spouting buzzword like "open video" and not even weighing the advantages / disadvantages of other codecs, or even the result of this "open video" movement, instead broadly claiming that youtube should "stop letting flash and all that bullshit hold us back and give us open video".

  • Are you aware that youtube has already experimented with this, and uses the h.264 codec, which isn't even supported by firefox 3.5?

  • Right obviously you are. Please don't go around basing "facts" on single blog posts by someone. "Theora is also higher quality than what YouTube offers."

This is absolute shite. brb, will find sources.

  • It's MY blog. And i already cited my sources. ::facepalm::

  • You obviously haven't read the description of this video. I posted better information on my blog because i figure people that actually read want more than people who only have the attention span to watch YouTube.

  • You've just changed the read more section. Cheat.

  • I only added links to my blog at the top. Everything else was there. I'd been meaning to update for a while because one of the links was outdated, i'd just forgotten. Either way, the information is there, thanks for the criticism, and hopefully i'll get better at this~

  • That's the criticism you should've posted in the first place, and i welcome it

  • k, this is awful...you need to practice and tighten this up A LOT

  • haha yeah, i'm a bit new to youtube-- thanks for stopping by though
