  • Very cool! Does anyone know how the whistle sounds are created?

  • @wonderbung My friend has a Russian one, which was in the family for generations, and which came to the USA with them years ago. It is probably 100 years newer than this one... but looks very similar. The song is created by small bellows, very similar to the way a cuckoo clock works. With my friend's, the bird still rises, but the two bellows are dried out, and broken, so it does not sing. There is no enameling on the box... it is all silver. Otherwise, it is almost identical.

  • @proto57 Interesting. Thanks! I wonder if any modern craftsmen have the skill to repair/replace the bellows.

  • @wonderbung Oh yes... bellows in clocks and music boxes are routinely repaired. There are even replacement bellows available for some common models. I made bellows for my cuckoo clock.. one out of tyvek, and one out of leather, to try both. Even rag paper would work, if the box were only occasionally used. New bellows patterns are made from the old parts, or designed from the whistle parts if no bellows are left at all... then folded and glued in place.

  • Muchas gracias por compartir estos videos! Realmente, estos automatas son maravillosos!!!

  • cute^^

  • Where do you put your weed into?

  • It is my own goal to be able to build something like this. I am slowly building up experience. So far I have made a locking book out of clay and have begun to experiment with metal. Unfortunately I have no clue how to make metal parts as fine as necessary for an automaton this size and am also having trouble attaining parts to power it. But someday I will have it.

  • That JD bird box is fantastic. I worked on that same one or one very like it about 15 years ago, I will never forget the moment I heard the song for the first time.

  • OMG I WANT ONE!!!!!!!!!!!

  • A truly masterpiece! Jaquet-Droz and other clockmaker made mechanical things are very impressive. I think in nowadays there isnt too much persons who can make such a thing...

  • you want one of these???

Got a a spare minimum of $3000 for an average one...lol

I love these also but can't be affording one in the very near future (if not before i die)

    :)

  • cool! I want one! where can I get one of these?

  • Really nice melody!! and funny too, it makes me smile n__n ...

and the box is a real jewel, I love the inside, those mechanical pieces are just perfects.
