  • That was solo Greg Dulli.

  • Has anyone seen Afghan Wings cover of the Leonard Cohen song, "Paper Thin Hotel" ? Thoughts....?

  • @emilygabriele321 it wasn't the whole Whigs, was it? Solid work, though.

  • And here we are... 2012!

  • good song

  • The Whigs are neither grunge nor post grunge for 2 reasons. Too much lead guitar and frequent use of piano, horns, etc. Not trademarks of the grunge label. This is why Pearl Jam is not a grunge band. Its 90% lead guitar. Grunge is Mudhoney, Nirvana, Tad, bands like this. I would call the Whigs Soul Inspired Alt Rock. Theres a new label for yas. Go run with it kids....

  • @Inspector6571 To which I say, "Yeah! FUCK YEAH!"

  • @HysOfficial you see back in the day there was such a thing as Americans who weren't xenophobic morons.....they didn't just necessarily denote "Afghan" with "bad" in those days...man for the days when stupid wasn't the rule of the day........

  • @HysOfficial actually, I saw your profile thingy. There's this neat new thing....it's called a search engine....GOOGLE THE FUCKING BAND, DUMBASS! Or better yet, scroll down some of the other comments and you'll see where the band name came from. Fucking Americans, huh? You've obviously proven we don't have the market cornered on ignorance.

  • @HysOfficial what the hell are you talking about? People liking this band or the name? And what does being American have anything to do with it?

  • this clip doesn't promote abstinence at all :)

  • @fiara481 Guess you didn't properly read what I said?

I never said they were post grunge, I was responding to someone that said they were and said that that made no sense.

  • what a tune what a band!

  • thank you saints row

  • Dulli's hanging on to that bird for dear life.

  • @pythonbyte I can't say I blame him.

  • OMG, I am such a crazy Afghan Whigs Kick right now. It's almost like a high....

  • Oh my God this is a great song and a great video

  • aahhh saints row, thats where i heard this! good tune, their version of TLC's creep is a fair effort also

  • reply to flea288 I'm sorry mate but you cant even come close to compare afghan whigs to arctic monkey's. I like arctic monkey's but whn it comes to substance they dont compare.

  • Saints Row :)

  • The new shit ain't got the soul of the Afghans and Dinosaur Jr. THis stuff spits all over Nickelback and anything that follows in their wake.

  • in mine music has meany voices and if kids find joy in this or music like staing or puddle of mud let them music is a vent for life dont say its crap cuz its not it

  • Not their best song, but a greAt one indeed.

I love this band so fucking much,i have all their discography!

  • who cares if they are grunge or not they where a great band

  • I just love how they ignored the grunge hype at the time and just did their own thing. RESPECT! love em

  • wtf? there not even afghan

  • Afghan Whigs is music for people with hearty cocks

  • in my opinion early/mid 90ies alternative rock music is just the best ever...

poor kids of today...look what theyve got....all these pseudo-post-grunge-rock-crap...seether, puddle of mudd, chevelle, staind...with no supstance or no brain...usualy both....

  • @lostandwounded sorry, but I don't agree: muse, coldplay, portishead... think positive:)

  • @physialis69 portishead came out in 94, and coldpay suck

  • @lostandwounded

I agree, Alternative Rock is AWESOME!!!! :D

  • @lostandwounded

hey bro, theres nothing wrong with post grunge...

  • @lostandwounded supstance

  • @lostandwounded I disagree, theres a lot of awesome bands around now as well, like Mars Volta, Beach House, Arctic Monkeys, Fleet Foxes etc. The Arctic Monkeys could match the quality of anything made in the last 30 - 40 years in my opinion, plus his works with the Last Shadow Puppets. Jack Whites brilliant as well, and Josh Holme is carrying on, same with the Chili Peppers and Dave Grouhl, I still think they make fine music, not to mention Pearl Jam.

  • @flea288 every metal band i hear is awesome now

  • @flea288 Pearl Jam wont ever be the same though, Josh hommes troops on indeed, eagles of death metal, them crooked vultures etc. that Hellacopters threw in the towel some years back is a shame though. that was Prime. 2 first albums from arctic monkeys were quite allright, shit now htough. for every 10 shitty bands out there, there are a few gems. you just have to keep looking =)

  • @crudechad Garbage mate, the Arctic Monkeys are brilliant.

  • @flea288 people tend to think the music from their youth was the best but it was just the memory of their own youth

that guy is old i bet

  • @Ziniho0608 Old and still amazing!

  • @lostandwounded How the fuck are you gonna say Chevelle has no brain? o_O Chevelle is way above most shit in the mainstream..

  • @lostandwounded hahaha stupidity is a common symptom of ignorance. The good music is out there, you just have to find it... (and its not usually in mainstream american "AltRock")

  • @lostandwounded true fucking story, give the world a new "soundgarden" sound, i think id gladly offer my left testicle for a Afghan Whigs show..

also, just to point out, Afghan Whigs is often chatogorized as "post-grunge", just a heads up.

  • @crudechad "also, just to point out, Afghan Whigs is often chatogorized as "post-grunge", just a heads up."

Makes little sense to me since they were around at the same time as grunge (I was around back then).

  • @rezargamer They're 90's indie. Not post grunge, at all.

  • @lostandwounded no supstance huh? no brain? The word is fucking substance, you brain dead fundamentalist moron.

  • @lostandwounded

today we are living in the best time for new music. all genres run dry from originality. you cant't reproduce a simple formula for 20 years. poor you that you do not hear all the great bands of today. pull your head out of your arse, theres more out their than 90's grunge

  • @TheDiddywahdiddy Wow, are you serious? Certainly there's more out there than 90's grunge, but "the best time for new music" are you fucking insane? The popular music of today takes its cues from the 80s from what I've noticed. My god, what an ugly, terrible talentless bullshit decade that was.

  • @lostandwounded Music just keeps getting dumber for some reason. Pretty soon it'll just be a bunch of slobbering invalids slapping themselves in the head with their instruments.

  • @lostandwounded I find Chevelle actually decent music, especially their earlier albums; but you're so right about the rest!

  • Sonic Youth and Afghan Whigs are so cool. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart too.

  • Greg Dulli is greasy, but Afghan Whigs are NOT grunge.

  • Grunge is arguably the last great rock movement in this country. 20 years ago. Kind of cool and sad at the same time.

  • @subsamadhi except not, guess you haven't heard of hardcore or emo.

  • Uh, (most) emo is fucking terrible. And hardcore came waaayyy before grunge. So except yes.

  • Sorry, but you don't know real emo. Glassjaw was an amazing band.

Hardcore died in the early 90's and a revival happened in the early 2000 called post-harcore.

    L2musics.

  • You'll notice I said "most" emo sucks. I am familiar with good emo, friend. Post hardcore bands are terrible as well (mostly). I am completely familiar with what you are talking about despite your best efforts.

  • Then you still fail, there were other great rock movements..

  • go back and look at your original comment. You specifically mentioned two genres of music that either came before grunge or alongside it, and neither were better overall. Don't get all shitty because you can't hold an argument to save your life.

  • Emo came after grunge, 6 years is still a long time.

  • actually it didn't. Emo started in the late 80's right alongside grunge. Do some research.

  • @subsamadhi Sunny Day Real Estate were amoung the first emo bands with their album Diary.

  • @Stratocaster821990 nope. first emo bands popped up in 1986, 1987 in the DC/Maryland area. 'Revolution Summer'. google it. Moss Icon, Rites of Spring, Embrace, The Hated, etc.

  • well me either and i don't want to, Grunge its much better in music and lyrics.

  • Dulli rockin the obligatory 90's Sub Pop hair sounded like J Mascis. Cincinnati grunge rocks.

  • love itt!

  • who is this chick wit her back facin u???"well tell her to turn around so i can see her face and body...selfish.

  • this my sh!t on saints row.classic

  • Had to chuckle at the 'origins' argument - these guys are Cincinnati all over and that's what made them such a cool addition to the (overly NW) Sub Pop portfolio at the time. As a Londoner (i.e. UK) I was buying their music now 19 years ago and they still sound brilliant. Mr Dulli changed his appearance somewhat since this single...still remember a gig at the London Astoria in '95 as something very, very cool indeedy....

  • Let us never forget that even though Greg Dulli is now leading the market in middle aged man angst along with Mark Lanegan, he was once young (sorry, it's just I was a kid when The Afghan Whigs were recording so I've never really seen him before The Gutter Twins). This is a fantastic song, I still like lots of new music, but I miss grunge, the only bands that I can remember having strong grunge influences in their music more recently are Blur (they really laid it on for 13) and maybe Elastica.

  • An absolutely mesmerizing song and and one of the best singers to emerge from the Pacific Northwest!

  • Get your facts correct, the band is from Ohio.

  • Get your facts COMPLETE(and learn to talk in a civil manner, okay). The band were formed in Ohio, but their EMERGENCE onto the music scene didn't occur until after they signed with Sub Pop Records in Seattle, Wash. They were the first band that Sub Pop signed that weren't "home grown" & Greg himself said that the band's sound and style changed radically after they came to Seattle:they absorbed many new influences & evolved and developed well

    beyond their former capabilities.

  • I'm going to respectfully disagree with that. Greg and the band were on a label based in Seattle, but they lived and played in Cincinnati and the local area. I saw Greg many times in town during that era. While he may have picked up new influences during touring, a lot of the core stuff (his love of R&B, soul, Motown, etc.) was deeply embedded way before that. Saying they "emerged from the Pacific Northwest" is like saying the Breeders emerged from the UK since they were on 4AD.

  • @Babyhowdy233 Emerge from Ohio!

  • They are from Cincinnati ding dong.

  • lol, greg dulli looks wierd with long hair

  • grandissimi afgani! adoro congregation.

  • Great band. Nice riffs, nice bass, with drums.

  • This band still in the road?

  • nope but greg dulli has new projects now like the twilight singers and the gutter twins. they are both on the road i'm pretty sure.

  • voll die scheiß video alte

  • When AW first started, they were called the Black Republicans. The name Afghan Whigs was a play on the original name.

  • I wish I was greg with that women on me lol

  • Go get a girlfriend.

  • I am sure other people with or with out girlfriends share my opinion, lol

  • hahha..sounds really despreate....loool

  • perhaps, lol just being honest.

  • lol.... your so funny man...

  • this is such a shallow comment but i wish i was the woman softly canoodling with dulli throughout the video. i know i'm not the only one!

  • Nah, that's not shallow.

Shallow is me wishing I could take Dulli's place in the video and be the one getting softly canoodled by that chick. :-)

  • Dude...

I FUCKING LOVE THE AFGHAN WHIGS!!! They fucking rock!

  • hey if you have a ps3 why not ADD me

    PSN: AFG_95

  • love love love Greg Dulli!

  • Fantastici! ma li conosco solo io?

  • They are great italian friend.

  • A me questa canzone piace particolarmente.

  • this song is nice i ilike the solo

  • One of the most underated bands. My list of underrated bands: Afghan Whigs, Husker Du, Catherine Wheels

  • totally ,,they were always one of those bands back in the 90s that you heard of but just bubbled under the radar (alongside husker du, the auteurs, girls vs boys etc). I only just really heard them thru 'retarded',,crackin band

  • yeah, catherine wheel are severely underrated, also add alice donut to that list.

  • you ignorant piece of shit ...and what does that nonsense you said mean? i love Afghan people and i like this music.you are so stupid !

  • these guys I think are that fine line between showgazin and the grunge from days long ago cause the guitars blaze and his singin is good,.. like dinosuar jr but not such as jay masics sings like he's scorn'd more a bit at times but this sounds more vengeful..better stop while I'm ahead yeah I like this song a bunch.

  • Oh yeah, I haven't noticed this so far, The Afghan Whigs really sounded similar to Dinosaur Jr. in their early days.

    Both great bands...

  • it's funny how the whigs started off with a sound indebted to the wheezy, sludgy, and wistful sound of dinosaur and then went in a more "sophisticated", dark direction.

not that i'm trying to dismiss these guys at all, because i like them; it's just weird thinking of blackberry belle's greg dulli emulating j. mascis back in the day. not to mention, i spy a rickenbacker bass...

i'm just glad that they ended up finding their own sound instead of becoming a dino jr. that was safe for consumers.

  • im working on tabbing tihs song out by ear.

you just can't get good music like this anymore and they're were so overlooked in the 90's where all that grunge shit was happening.

i got nothing against the 90's or grunge, but but people just overlook the really good bands.

  • although i dont see any connection with afghanistan in his videos, but if he is originally from afg then good work. Finally someone who has done something new and different. Keep it up!

  • apparently, the band name came from the 19th century political party and the country from which they're favorite weed came.

  • correction: 18th century political party

  • Afghan Whigs was/is (not sure) a biker gang, thats where the name comes from. Nothing to do with the country.

  • I love this band,i got all their cd's and i love all of them...

  • One of my most favorite songs by them. I've got all their albums and listen to them daily. You just can't get great music like this anymore.

  • BEST VIDEO EVER!!! Why did someone say Greg's missed? The Afghan Whigs ROCKED. Then he's made 4 Twilight Singers CD's. Now he's made a CD with Mark Lanagan called The Gutter Twins that is KILLER as well. I like the Whigs the best out of em all but Greg always makes great music. Saw the Whigs live and The Twightlight Singers in Minneapolis, both GREAT SHOWS.

  • fuck u whoever talks shit man

  • These guys were always on the brink...

One near "hit" song after another, and this was the first.

Part of me LOVES that they are one of my secrect treasures, but in the end, these guys deserved so much more.

Great band. Dulli...GREAT frontman. Missed very much.

  • khayavsker, what the fuck are you even trying to say? You type like a retarded 13 year old, and that's not a good thing.

good luck with failing at life, i'm sure when i ask you to turn on pump 7 you'll look at me with a familiar yet vacant stare.

    the whigs were fucking awesome.

  • Listen to the riff brothers.

  • Miss Crysti

thanks for posting this! It's one of my favorite Whigs songs! I didn't even know there was a video for this one.

    A Great Band live...saw them 4-5 times.

  • I'm literally crying - this was the first Whigs song I ever heard and it never gets old. Thanks for posting this.

  • Wow, you're a dumbass!

Afghan Whigs is also the name of a band. It's not the poster's fault if that's the name they chose.

  • I'm sorry, what? Could you rephrase that in human?

  • you throughly fail.

  • This is a very good song.

Never understood why this group was so underrated: they were a lot better than a lot of so-called "grunge" crap that was successfull at the time.

  • So fucking genius. Great Dulli!!!!

  • great greg dulli 90 alternetive rocks

  • One of the best bands ever. Thanks. Great song.

  • these guys fuckn rock do you have "gentleman vids or music"gei

  • Good tune.
