My first reaction isn't to take it seriously. I've met some brits who have the same attitude, but with their dry sense of humor it can be difficult to tell if they're serious sometimes. My mom also works for a UK software company, and they don't belittle her at all. She telecommutes, so she feels a bit alone sometimes. However, I've met her co-workers in person. VERY GOOD POINT! And I don't blame you for your irritation. I just think it might sometimes be misplaced. However, I come from a family where making fun of each other is a sign of affection. My first reaction isn't to take it seriously. I've met some brits who have the same attitude, but with their dry sense of humor it can be difficult to tell if they're serious sometimes. So maybe, I'm just a bit weird, lol.

My mom also works for a UK software company, and they don't belittle her at all. She telecommutes, so she feels a bit alone sometimes. However, I've met her co-workers in person. They all seem to hold respect for her and her work. Sometimes she even has to correct them on UK English, lol. I love the company she works for. They're so much more laid- back and worker-focused than many US companies. They really care about their employees. That's why I have a hard time just taking your word for it.

Also the biggest amount of scientific research is done in these laboratories resulting in the biggest number of patents. Thousands come to the US every year to get their college degrees. Maybe they asked 100 people (not 1000) they are working off a small budget from our government i dont think they would have the money/resources to interview 1000's.
