  • Bette has an ear for great songs and great composers (Prine, Waits, Mcgee), I wish she would record a CD solely dedicated to that type of material!! Yes John is an American treasure.

  • fabulous song...but i like Bette's version better.....sorry, John

  • Such a powerful song written by a 25 year old John Prine.

  • rudy toot tootie. This has always been one of my favorites by John. I can't say any one song is my favorite by him. There are just too many that i love... Thank you John for a lifetime of smiles and not all of them illegal smiles. but quite a few were....

  • i just randomly typed so i was walking down the street...

  • John Prine is one of the great songwriters of the last 30 years and this is a piece of wonderful modern poetry set to lovely music. If this was Schubert, they would herald his genius.

  • Download the audio from this vid at tubepull doht cohm.

  • See my good friend and pickin' buddys' been here..Got the tears a flowin' now..This song never gets old to me,nor does John Prine..Yes my sister..He's the best !!!

  • Pure Poetry! He's the best...

  • 10,000 Maniacs do a good version, but John just gets stronger.

  • I was doing to say that John was a National Treasure. But, somebody already said it. That doesn't make it any less true. Between this song, "Spanish Pipe Dream," and "Paradise." That's a pretty good legasy. You can throw in "Angel from Montgomery" for good measure.

  • Our Old Ones - we'll all be there someday. And, depending on your point of view on the immortality of the human soul, we'll be there again and again and again... Magical song - magical delivery - this guy is beyond description.

  • I was in the front row on the right hand side of this concert, and when he played this song the whole place was so quiet and listening intently. I grew up like so many others listening to JP, this song is one of my very favourite, thanks for posting>

  • three thumbs up

  • A very poignant song, basically no one gives a fuk as u get older.........then u die !!!!!!

  • I am almost ashamed t say this but, each time i hear this i cry.

A one in a thousand songs.

  • @dobella nothing to be ashamed of, its an amazing song. im pretty much the same way, as is my dad. we both teared up at this show. you can actually hear him in the beginning, his "wooo" as soon as he realized what song it was has a pre-teary sound to it if you ask me...

  • @dobella There's a comfort knowing we've truly a universal family. dobella, dear, ashamed of empathy? Ashamed of compassion? Your tears affirm you're not calloused. I see people who appear they've all but withered away to dust inside and walk around with tombstones in their eyes. (doorsesque) Celebrate you feel your emotions.

    ~Blessings

  • @dobella

    Me too :)

I'd be bothered if I ever met someone who didn't cry when they hear this song.

  • He tells us stuff we've thought about but then let pass. We are better off having John Prine in this world.

  • Never heard him do this song where it didn't put a lump in my throat. Thanks for posting.

  • beautiful...

  • Here is one of America's most admirable exports! I have enjoyed his music for over 30 years and I look forward to seeing him play live again...one of the best song writers of all time!!

  • Tears to my eyes. Loneliness is a desperate culprit. John made it perfect.

    Hello in there. Hello.

  • Since John's folks came from KY us hillbillies claim him too.

  • @eastwood203 cant have him us newfies have him claimed lol

  • John Prine, though from Maywood, Illinois is considered by many to be the quintessential "Texas Singer-Songwriter"....being I'm from Texas but now live in Illinois... I don't have a problem with that.

  • special...gets me every time...thanks John!!!

  • me and lauretta we don't talk much anymore.

I miss my old friend. Lauretta.

old people just grow lonesome, waitin' for someone to say 'hello in there oh'.

I liked this song long before I had ancient eyes.

    Thanx.

  • Sometimes it just all makes sense.

  • I fell in love with the song and the guy who played it for me in 1980. Still love the song;)

  • fantastic! always brings tears in my eyes,,,,

  • Just probably one of the best songs that was ever written. Absolutely beautiful and tragic

  • You make me cry I hope to be half the man. tell PAM LOVE IS IN A WATTS HEART LOVE fore ever. PS lets jam my friend.

  • A poet, and can play the guitar. When Kriss Kristofferson says of you that you are "the best song writer ever"-----well that pretty much says it all.

  • I don't see how such perfect words come out of someone's head...

  • i could not agree with you any more...perfectly said..

  • A National Treasure is what John Prine is

    thank you for sharing this

  • one of the classics from a true legend!!! THANX JOHN!!!!
