  • 9 people doesn't know how to spell holiday!!!

  • Luv u Lady Day. There will never be another.

  • beautiful, just beautiful

  • I never knew who Billie Holiday was, or that it was even a woman, I know my mom would talk about her a lot but because of her name being "Billie" I assumed it was "Billy" and always pictured a guy. I'm now blown away that I didn't know who she was and now that I have heard her sing...I'm again BLOWN AWAY...I should have asked my mom more about her when I was little, I sure did miss out! I'm glad I found ya!

  • STFU and enjoy the song.....

  • ''Money, you've got lots of friends crowding round the door

When you're gone, spending ends they don't come no more''-this is NOT pro-capitalist, it is about true values and self-worth in all aspects of life. At some point we should stop being parasites and assume responsibility over our own life. This is the lyrics meaning.

  • listening 2 the amy winehouse new cd,brought me back 2 lady day,an this my fav.song.of billie ...just brillant. both amazing talents RIP to both.

  • well, facebook sent me here because on billie holiday's official likepage this song got the first place in a question about user's favorites

  • I should also add that I was by no means saying the song was consciously or even explicitly pro-capitalism. But the stuff like this where it's taken for granted and done unconsciously ends up being all the more effective in reinforcing the values and assumptions, for being unintentional and natural. When you treat something as a fact of life, it tends to become viewed that way. And things viewed that way are accepted uncritically and little raged against. Still a good song, in any case.

  • @cauchamar It's a fucking SONG its music..interpreted in many ways, theres no way to prove what you are saying is RIGHT. God, can't you just enjoy the music put forth before you, instead of picking it apart and trying to interpret and pissing people off with your comments. I don't like people like you! .period.

  • Beautiful song, but really a disgusting moral/ point of view. There's no indication in the lyrics she's complaining or criticizing the point of view, either. These lyrics are played straight and say what they mean. An anthem for capitalist values, such as they are.

  • @cauchamar I don't think you get it, really. Everything is not pitched as either a tendentious recommendation or a vehement protest. This is the blues ethos -- tells the gritty truth as it is, and yes, it does speak against it, just in the telling alone. There was a little lapel button back in the sixties that said the same thing, just as a dry, shrewd observation of the way of things: "Life is like a s*** sandwich. The more bread you got, the less s*** you have to eat."

  • @manthasagittarius

On the contrary, I don't think *you* get it. This song, like that lapel pin, by acting as a shrewd, sophisticated observation of "the way of things," validates the argument that is in fact the way of things. In accepting the premises of a certain argument, it loses the argument. It's compromising with evil before the war (or the negotiation) even begins, by treating it as a mere fact of life. Still, I respect your comment since it was intelligent and thoughtful and not rude.

  • @cauchamar I don't see how it has anything to do with capitalism, but even if you're right about that, what's wrong with capitalism?

What economic system would you prefer, sir?

  • I came here because my aunt sang a different version of this with her jazz quintet...it was a more upbeat tempo. Both are very lovely versions. :)

  • R.I.P. BILLIE HOLIDAY NEVER HAVE A VOICE LIKE THAT AGAIN TRUE LRGEND THRU THE OPPRESSION...

  • It took me 30 Minutes to think of a Comment. Like something cool.

I guess it's coz of Billy Holliday. In other Words.

  • BIOSHOCK. WOOP WOOP

  • I simply can't describe the life and voice of this woman. Her life and music, one and the same, simply demonstrate that we and everything else are here to do something and to deliver something that only you and no one else can deliver. That's why YOU ARE YOU

  • Haley brought me here.

  • lyrics r inaccurate

  • @whenImwithyou210 she actually was more so inspired to write this about the Great depression. as well as influenced by her personal probs as you've stated. I did Jazz Studies at MSU and learned a lot about Billie...such a misunderstood soul!

  • GOP's tune & mantra

  • GOP's tune

  • thumbs up if you found out about this after seeing greys anatomy!

  • I sang this song for a concert in 7th grade for a solo. I fell in love with this song. I had someone come up to me after and said that he was a big Billie fan and dislikes most people's versions, but mine he loved. *Note, I had one week to learn the song before the concert. I even had the same flower in my hair like Billie. Here's to a wonderful lady.

  • A once in a in all lifetimes event we call Billie Holiday.... That voice was like taking a hit of something magical.

  • i cant get enough of Billie Holiday......great talent and voice...

  • thumbs up if Billie Holiday brought you here.

  • Jacob Lusk and Haley Reinhart brought me here

  • Thumbs up if Schindler's List brought you here.

  • Well Billie holiday was one of the most outstanding jazz performers and yes I've heard how Jacob lusk sings it. And he's AWESOME TOTALLY AWESOME and i don't get why people hate him cuz he's gay... Elton john is gay too, so what?

  • i love it.. the song has truly evolved but we couldn't deny that this original version is really really good as much as it is today. thumbs up!

  • just as important today as it was back in the day

  • Thank´s Billy for so much mu.aaaaaaaaaatsic it entered my heart, and it always will

  • much as I like jacob lusk, it's a billie holiday video. thx

  • I love Haley and Jacob's renditions of this, but the amount of people being brought here BECAUSE of them is just saddening to me.

  • @lifeisdivinechaos1 anyway people learn of billie holiday is a good thing

  • OMG that is so true!! I love it!!!

  • I'd rather Haley's (Idol) version than the Jacob'S one HE'S SO FUCKING OVERACTED AND I HATE THAT BUT HE'S A GOOD SINGER!

  • Thumbs up if you were brought here by "Enron: The Smartest Guys In The Room"

  • @JohnJacksonJohnson Wow. I was watching CNBC Enron: The Smartest Guys In The Room and that is what brought me here. lol. God bless the child!!!!!!!!!!!

  • UH HUH YEAH!

  • Billie Holiday did NOT survive because of Youtube. She remains today because she was an ARTIST! A genuine artist with a voice that is heartbreaking. She created her own legacy.

  • Happy Birthday, Lady Day. American Idolatry cannot hold a candle to your legacy. You will forever be among the greatest jazz singers of all time.

  • So, after seeing all the comments about Jacob Lusk, I investigated his performance. I really do not like what he did to this song. It's about subtlety, Billie was a master and understood the concept well. Rest In Power Ms. Holiday, you are loved, missed and remembered.

  • Thumbs up if American Idol wasn't what brought you here.

  • Just heard this on the radiogram and as the disc jockey, a miss lilian Smith said, isn't it just gorgeous. She really is my favourite sound of all time, that is even with the next record being Frank Sinatra, "I never knew my heart could sing". Program is RTE Late date SAT sun Mon, with the aforementioned lady, best of everything.

  • Hers is the only version of this song I can stand.

  • My mom used to sing this....RIP love her always...

  • Lady Day!!!!

  • A Sadie

  • one of the first blues songs i ever heard, about 4 yrs old. was my favorite song then and remains that way today.

  • im doing a report on billie holiday and im glad i chose her because shes so talented beautiful and interesting =)

  • I feel so much for this woman, to see it in a positiv way is kind of hard, but her voice

and all she has given me is unforgettable, she lives in my heart and always will.

She is gone, but NOT FORGOTTEN

  • Billie was born to an unmarried 13 year old Sadie in 1915. Her mother was expelled from her parents house & Billie sent to live with her aunt. She was in reform school at 10, dropped out by 11, and raped at 12. By 14 she & her mother were prison for prostitution. By 17 she started singing in clubs in New York. I don’t think God had anything to do with it “God Bless The Child”. If you got money you are blessed. Money doesn’t buy happiness?? Tell that to Billie in 1929.

  • I sing this song a lot, and the way I interpret that line, "god bless the child that's got his own," is that the child can get along on his own. Kind of sardonic - i.e., God bless a winner (as opposed to God help someone who is struggling). Not sure that's right, but not sure there IS a right or wrong interpretation, really.

  • Jacob Lusk makes this song : heavenly

  • Can anybody help explain what she means when she says "god bless the child that's got his own." ? i don't understand that phrase.

  • @ChoccoTeddy

In Ms. Holiday's life, at a very early age, she discovered that no one was going to take care of her. Her parents were not there for her. She was in the care of various people, thus, she was at their mercy. When a person says, "God Bless You", generally, they are asking God to watch over you, protect you. In Ms. Holiday's situation, once she started making money, she realized she gained some control. The song asks God to help those children who go through strife, as she did.

  • @ChoccoTeddy Do for yourself!!! Ain't nobody gonna do for you!

  • thumbs up if jacob lusk brought u here!!!

  • @zachsqared jacob lusk will win america idol im sure for he who goes with god will overcome all
