I never knew who Billie Holiday was, or that it was even a woman, I know my mom would talk about her a lot but because of her name being "Billie" I assumed it was "Billy" and always pictured a guy. I'm now blown away that I didn't know who she was and now that I have heard her sing...I'm again BLOWN AWAY...I should have asked my mom more about her when I was little, I sure did miss out! I'm glad I found ya!
''Money, you've got lots of friends crowding round the door
When you're gone, spending ends they don't come no more''-this is NOT pro-capitalist, it is about true values and self-worth in all aspects of life. At some point we should stop being parasites and assume responsibility over our own life. This is the lyrics meaning.
I should also add that I was by no means saying the song was consciously or even explicitly pro-capitalism. But the stuff like this where it's taken for granted and done unconsciously ends up being all the more effective in reinforcing the values and assumptions, for being unintentional and natural. When you treat something as a fact of life, it tends to become viewed that way. And things viewed that way are accepted uncritically and little raged against. Still a good song, in any case.
@cauchamar It's a fucking SONG its music..interpreted in many ways, theres no way to prove what you are saying is RIGHT. God, can't you just enjoy the music put forth before you, instead of picking it apart and trying to interpret and pissing people off with your comments. I don't like people like you! .period.
Beautiful song, but really a disgusting moral/ point of view. There's no indication in the lyrics she's complaining or criticizing the point of view, either. These lyrics are played straight and say what they mean. An anthem for capitalist values, such as they are.
@cauchamar I don't think you get it, really. Everything is not pitched as either a tendentious recommendation or a vehement protest. This is the blues ethos -- tells the gritty truth as it is, and yes, it does speak against it, just in the telling alone. There was a little lapel button back in the sixties that said the same thing, just as a dry, shrewd observation of the way of things: "Life is like a s*** sandwich. The more bread you got, the less s*** you have to eat."
On the contrary, I don't think *you* get it. This song, like that lapel pin, by acting as a shrewd, sophisticated observation of "the way of things," validates the argument that is in fact the way of things. In accepting the premises of a certain argument, it loses the argument. It's compromising with evil before the war (or the negotiation) even begins, by treating it as a mere fact of life. Still, I respect your comment since it was intelligent and thoughtful and not rude.

i'm 15 & i Love Ms . Holiday <3 Just Something About Her Voice Attracts Me to Listen for Hours ; Her , Ray Charles , Dinah Washington , Nina Simone & Sarah Vaughan Are Unforgettable . <3
Can you all please shut up about the "Who brought me here" comments? They tend to get annoying and interrupting this beautiful song. God Bless you Billie.
I simply can't describe the life and voice of this woman. Her life and music, one and the same, simply demonstrate that we and everything else are here to do something and to deliver something that only you and no one else can deliver. That's why YOU ARE YOU
@whenImwithyou210 she actually was more so inspired to write this about the Great depression. as well as influenced by her personal probs as you've stated. I did Jazz Studies at MSU and learned a lot about Billie...such a misunderstood soul!

Billie Holiday did NOT survive because of Youtube. She remains today because she was an ARTIST! A genuine artist with a voice that is heartbreaking. She created her own legacy.
So, after seeing all the comments about Jacob Lusk, I investigated his performance. I really do not like what he did to this song. It's about subtlety, Billie was a master and understood the concept well. Rest In Power Ms. Holiday, you are loved, missed and remembered.
Just heard this on the radiogram and as the disc jockey, a miss lilian Smith said, isn't it just gorgeous. She really is my favourite sound of all time, that is even with the next record being Frank Sinatra, "I never knew my heart could sing". Program is RTE Late date SAT sun Mon, with the aforementioned lady, best of everything.
Billie was born to an unmarried 13 year old Sadie in 1915. Her mother was expelled from her parents house & Billie sent to live with her aunt. She was in reform school at 10, dropped out by 11, and raped at 12. By 14 she & her mother were prison for prostitution. By 17 she started singing in clubs in New York. I don’t think God had anything to do with it “God Bless The Child”. If you got money you are blessed. Money doesn’t buy happiness?? Tell that to Billie in 1929.

I sing this song a lot, and the way I interpret that line, "god bless the child that's got his own," is that the child can get along on his own. Kind of sardonic - i.e., God bless a winner (as opposed to God help someone who is struggling). Not sure that's right, but not sure there IS a right or wrong interpretation, really.
In Ms. Holiday's life, at a very early age, she discovered that no one was going to take care of her. Her parents were not there for her. She was in the care of various people, thus, she was at their mercy. When a person says, "God Bless You", generally, they are asking God to watch over you, protect you. In Ms. Holiday's situation, once she started making money, she realized she gained some control. The song asks God to help those children who go through strife, as she did.

I feel so much for this woman, to see it in a positiv way is kind of hard, but her voice
and all she has given me is unforgettable, she lives in my heart and always will.

@ChoccoTeddy
