  • 80? I'm in complete shock! I had NO idea she was that old! I've loved her for years but never even thought about her age! She'd be almost 82 today! I always see her as 60!

Oddly, all of my favorite actresses are older British women - Patricia Routledge, Joan Plowright, Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Angela Lansbury. I NEVER get tired of watching them on the screen.

  • Class act all the way.

  • looks like making people laugh(as well as yourself) is the best medicine

How can you enjoy her sense of humor? Long live the Bucket woman!

  • Amazing woman, STILL SO FUNNY! <3

I hope she gets to read or hear of all of these wonderful comments from her fans.

  • I love you so much Mrs. Bucket, I have so many happy memories watching you every Sunday night LOL while I was running around trying to get my self together before I went to work on the night shift.

Thanks so much for all the great memories :)

  • She has great comedic gifts. Love her to death.

  • Love her! I just want to hug her :) Amazing actress.

  • Someone said Patricia Routledge was still very pretty at 80 years old, and I see here, she really is! Not a wrinkle on her face!--Just look at her--REMARKABLE!

  • Actually she had a very successful Broadway career - in two not very good musicals she had music written for her by Leonard Bernstein in 1600 Pennsylvannia, Julie Styne in Darling of the Day plus Pirates of Penzance in Central Park and several other shows. She's a bloody wonder!

  • Judy was pissed as a fart here

  • i could listen to old ppl talk all day! she reminds me so much of my nan!

  • An Absolute natural Super Star ... Brilliant in "The Importance Of Being Earnest"

at the Regal Theatre in Perth Western Australia . and just sensational in

"Keeping Up Appearances" Common Patricia I'm sure you could do a sole show as did Warren Mitchell

  • Don't you just simply love and adore her! <3

  • holy cow she looks great!!! that's great! may she live to be 110!

  • Love Patricia! She's the best of the best!

  • I love KUA! I watch it here in Texas on our PBS station out of Dallas. Such a funny show and a funny woman! She looks great.

  • This is great. Hard to believe she's that old. She's a grand lady. Many more birthday wishes to you and may you keep working. I've enjoyed everything I've seen thus far. Hope to see more.

  • Congratulations Pat! Judy is coming up to her 80th this year, I think.

  • Never in a million years would I have guessed Patricia Routledge was 80 years old. That means she was 60 or so when Keeping Up Appearances was made. Amazing if you know all the stunts she did then. She's great and have seen a large body of her work including A Woman of No Importance; a must see. Love her. You keep it up Kitty!

  • Such a beautiful talented woman.

  • Love Hyacinth. Watch her every Friday on PBS in the USA.

  • my favorite actress, I absolutely adore her, she reminds so much me of my mum , who passed away

  • I love Richard and Judy, so good!

  • When I turn 80, I would like to be like PR. She is an inspiration!!!!

  • I really luv her...she is such a brilliant actress and seems to be a wonderful person.

  • is the guy who played her husband still alive

  • She looks great.

  • fantastic lady .

  • No way! She cant be 80!

  • she is one of the funniest people i have ever seen, ive been watching her show since it came on PBS here in the U.S. years ago, ive never missed a show and never missed a laugh either, she is the best, in Keeping Up Appearance.. lol

  • 'Sheridan, is that you dear?'

  • I would love to know where to write this lady. actuallly all of the cast. and its ashame Mary (Rose) Millar passed away. All the cast were perfect for this show. love to see a reunion show based around christmas with daddy still living..lol

  • How did Universal come to own "Keeping...."? Have they optioned a film version?

  • @antoniod Universal don't own the series, the BBC do. They've merely licensed the region two DVD rights from the BBC for a period of five years, as the BBC haven't any plans to release it themselves.

  • @antoniod What an interesting thought, though I think they're all too old now, Mary Millar is gone, and it wouldn't transfer well to film.

  • This woman is incredible.

Boy, could she move in her series.

Often we were amazed by some of her antics. Ha.

  • I agree -- she's so versatile and any character is takes on is so authentic! I can watch her Hyacinth and still laugh at the same episodes over & over!

  • The 'Bucket Woman' looks 'jolly good' for an old dame!!! We LOVE her in the States on PBS and BBCAmerica, as well!!!

  • @OHhooverpoof lol!!

  • @OHhooverpoof best comedy ever! you are so right!

  • @OHhooverpoof Its good to hear that people in the US get to watch the Genius of Mrs Bucket. Its a shame she didnt have a big career because essentially, although she has done a lot of stuff, she will always be remembered for this awesome comedy.

  • @OHhooverpoof Here, in Poland, we also love her!!! I've got the whole series on dvd and each time I watch it laugh. I remember that when I was a little girl I used to watch it with my grandma. Shes dead for 15 years:( but it will always be OUR favourite show.

  • @OHhooverpoof Yeah same here

  • @OHhooverpoof Amen to that!

  • Patricia's such a great actress (one of my favorite Brits). Great interview; & I liked her series as a private investigator, too ..but I can't remember the title?

  • Hetty Wainthrop Investigates, I think... ;-)

  • @FinalCut6

YES! thanks... I had a momentary brain fart..but then I remembered the name. You can find it here on YouTube.

  • @ marcostar57

    Hehe. I always loved Hyacinth.

Me and my nanna never used to call it "Keeping Up Appearances" we called it simply "Hyacinth" :-D.

I think Hetty is the one that had Charlie from Lost it :-D. (I love Lost)

All the good 90's shows went and a lot of them aren't as good now :-(

  • Hetty Wainthropp Investigates. I'm not sure whom I prefer, Hyacinth or Hetty. Whichever, I LOVE Patricia Routledge. Such a classy, wonderful woman.

  • Aww Patricia looks good,i hope we have her for a long time to come.I was wondering how she was.

  • Bless her! I have my birthday in February but I love Patricia Routledge!

  • wow she looks fantastic! Best actress I've ever seen!

  • She looks wonderful, such a great actress and comedian!

  • She's better than the comedians here in the USA

  • Yes,she's great and so gifted!

  • If she had a chance to do a last comic standing, she would win..and that's including using Hyacinth Bucket (It's Bouquet dear...Bouquet!)

  • Oh yes! :)

  • @imonkeylover

I would love to see her on Last Comic Standing on NBC...BOOK HER!!!

  • Wish NBC would book her! :)

  • @imonkeylover

I think Patricia would be an icon...Better than Joan "F-Bomb" Rivers.

  • haha she looks 60

  • I wanted her as Umbridge in the Harry Potter movies.

  • yes yes yes, would have been SO much better than the current actress!!

  • She would pull that off better than anybody.

  • omg! she looks amazing!!! fab woman!

  • Love her work!!

  • Wow! I hope I'm like that at 80, she's in wonderful shape!

  • Love Patricia...my fav actress. xxx

  • That whole cast of KUA was really full of great comic actors. Great chemistry.

  • I love her formal way of talking. ^^

  • Crazy about her in America .. One of the funniest shows I have ever had the priveledge of watching.

  • Best wishes from Poland, looking good, great mind, love you Patricia. You remind me my mother, mirror image.

  • Happy birthday, Patricia

Still a big megastar in Denmark with the show "Keeping Up Appearances"

  • What a beautiful woman!

  • She's 80?? Wow that means when she was filming for Keeping Up Appearances, she was already in her 60s? Damn she's so good for 60s on acting.

  • Hyacinth is one of my three favorite Britcom women--next to Nora Batty and Miss Slocombe, RIP both of them.

  • She barely looks 60! Way to go, Patricia! Keep it up! Love you and your attitude towards a good liberal arts education!

  • She looks great! Happy belated Birthday, you wonderful woman!

  • Happy Belated Birthday to you, Dear Lady!!!

  • What a lovely lady! Still on here in Norway, every weekday.

  • Same here in Sweden. :D

  • We in the US who have seen her on PBS LOVE her in Keeping Up Appearances and as Hetty Wainthrope - but I was so pleased to find some of the other things she has done! I should have guessed from the timbre of her voice, I never knew she was quite the singer in her day. Watch her performance in the Pirates of Penzance, the one with Debbie Reynolds. Fantastic.

What a talent. You Brits are just too fortunate with the wellspring of women talent - Judi Dench, Julie Walters, Helen Mirren... :)

  • I love this lady!

  • I've sometimes thought the "Hyacinth Bucket" character was influenced by the Australian character (as portrayed by Barry Humphries), "Dame Edna Everage." Is that a well-recognized comparison?

There's just something about the vocal inflection and jutting forward of the chin that seems borrowed. And as "Dame Edna" evolved from an "Aunt Edna" character in the early 1970s, "Hyacinth Bucket" not begun keeping up her appearances until 1990, the Humphries character was first.

  • I rather suspect Patricia Routledge and "Keeping Up Appearances" is as beloved in the UK as Betty White and "The Golden Girls' are in the States.

Although I'm aware "Golden Girls" is also popular in Europe, and, at least among a select demographic who have watched "Keeping Up Appearances" and/or "Hetty Wainthropp Investigates," Miss Routledge is also popular among us in the States too.

  • Saw her the other day in To Sir With Love; she played a fellow teacher of Poitier's character.

  • She lives near where i go to uni! Sorry just i'm a huge Hyacinth Bucket fan!

  • hey DO you think you could send me her adress, I wish to send her letter from Czech republic and ask her for autography...I'd be amazing to have it. Please...or anyone else has her adress??? Thank you to all good souls...

  • Hi, sorry I got it wrong, i thought she said she lived in the cheshire county in England...unfortunatly i don't have her address! But I think if you look on the internet you should be able to find some sort of address or e-mail address for fans to contact her...sorry i couldn't be more helpful though! :)

  • No probs, thank you anyway. ;-)

  • wat a actress put these young uns to shame from snobby mrs bucket to traditional lancashire woman in hetty wainthrop

  • Oh I love Richards comment towards the end: No seriously you look great.. for a woman of your age.. lol Compliment?

  • Wszystkiego najlepszego Hiacynto

  • Hyacinth Bucket has a lot of redeeming qualities. No matter how pretentious she gets, you just love her, especially when she gets unwanted romantic attention from shepherds, etc.

  • Just loveeee Her! A Very TALENTED ACTRESS! A REAL DIVA! God Bless Patricia!

  • 80!? she dont look it

  • Wow, she looks great ---80???

  • CORRECTION: "FRANCES CAMPBELL-PRESTON" (not "Jane Campbell-Preston").

FRANCES -- not Jane -- is the first name of the long-serving lady-in-waiting to the Queen Mother, to whom the very wonderful Patricia Routledge refers.

By the way, the title of Mrs. Campbell-Preston's memoirs -- in which she does recall, vividly, her time with the Queen Mother, but much elkse as well -- is RICH SPOILS OF TIME, and it is a great pleasure to read it!

  • My god! she looks amazing! if only all people and actors and actresses could age so finely

  • I love Mrs. Bucket! Oops... Bouquet!

  • She IS the best! I found this broadcast through your favo[u]rites and it was a pleasure to watch!

  • Indeed she is the BEST!

  • I don't want to waste time watching this, unless she shouts 'RRRICHARD!!!' at him. I'm sure she must.

  • i used to cringe at Richard when i was at school, some things don't change.

  • She looks amazing. What a wonderful actress, and wonderful lady.

  • An excellent actress of impeccable humour, diction and pure English Class. Also brilliant in singing, although not particulary famous for that. Thank you for posting!

  • Thank you for posting. Keeping Up Appearances is still on every week here in Florida on Saturday nights on PBS and we love it! It's good, clean fun and she's brilliant!

  • ...she's marvelous ! she should still acting in Broadway. I like listening her great voice and fantastic diction.

  • 80 is the new 60. Doesn't she look marvelous?! Thank you for sharing this with us. I love her work, and especially as Hyacinth. How about a KUA reunion?

  • YESSSS!!!! a KUA reunion would be absolutely MARVELOUS!!!!

  • Thanks for posting this for those of us in the U.S. who can't get this sort of thing. Happy Birthday, Patricia!
