I had the amazing fortune of seeing her onstage in The Importance of Being Earnest at The Savoy in March of '01. Wonderful memory and a highlight of my trip to London.
Mashallah may God give her and the rest of the cast of Keeping Up Appearances a long life .. its out favorite show ... possibly the most well written and well thought out show of all time ...and rest in peace Mary Miller you are missed
shes stopped playing hyacinth because she didnt want to always be know as hyacinth....im sorry but when i see her all i think of is hyacinth ..i love her.
I love Patricia, you're an amazing lady and I still watch "keeping up appearances at every chance I get. You could say that I know all the episodes by heart. I hope you live to a hundred !!
One just can't get tired of watching that show, it is hilarius....the entire cast is talented and that "Madame Bousquet" is something to see. love her!
80? I'm in complete shock! I had NO idea she was that old! I've loved her for years but never even thought about her age! She'd be almost 82 today! I always see her as 60!
Oddly, all of my favorite actresses are older British women - Patricia Routledge, Joan Plowright, Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Angela Lansbury. I NEVER get tired of watching them on the screen.
I love you so much Mrs. Bucket, I have so many happy memories watching you every Sunday night LOL while I was running around trying to get my self together before I went to work on the night shift.
Someone said Patricia Routledge was still very pretty at 80 years old, and I see here, she really is! Not a wrinkle on her face!--Just look at her--REMARKABLE!
Actually she had a very successful Broadway career - in two not very good musicals she had music written for her by Leonard Bernstein in 1600 Pennsylvannia, Julie Styne in Darling of the Day plus Pirates of Penzance in Central Park and several other shows. She's a bloody wonder!
This is great. Hard to believe she's that old. She's a grand lady. Many more birthday wishes to you and may you keep working. I've enjoyed everything I've seen thus far. Hope to see more.
Never in a million years would I have guessed Patricia Routledge was 80 years old. That means she was 60 or so when Keeping Up Appearances was made. Amazing if you know all the stunts she did then. She's great and have seen a large body of her work including A Woman of No Importance; a must see. Love her. You keep it up Kitty!
she is one of the funniest people i have ever seen, ive been watching her show since it came on PBS here in the U.S. years ago, ive never missed a show and never missed a laugh either, she is the best, in Keeping Up Appearance.. lol
I would love to know where to write this lady. actuallly all of the cast. and its ashame Mary (Rose) Millar passed away. All the cast were perfect for this show. love to see a reunion show based around christmas with daddy still living..lol
@antoniod Universal don't own the series, the BBC do. They've merely licensed the region two DVD rights from the BBC for a period of five years, as the BBC haven't any plans to release it themselves.
I agree -- she's so versatile and any character is takes on is so authentic! I can watch her Hyacinth and still laugh at the same episodes over & over!
@OHhooverpoof Its good to hear that people in the US get to watch the Genius of Mrs Bucket. Its a shame she didnt have a big career because essentially, although she has done a lot of stuff, she will always be remembered for this awesome comedy.
@OHhooverpoof Here, in Poland, we also love her!!! I've got the whole series on dvd and each time I watch it laugh. I remember that when I was a little girl I used to watch it with my grandma. Shes dead for 15 years:( but it will always be OUR favourite show.
Patricia's such a great actress (one of my favorite Brits). Great interview; & I liked her series as a private investigator, too ..but I can't remember the title?
We in the US who have seen her on PBS LOVE her in Keeping Up Appearances and as Hetty Wainthrope - but I was so pleased to find some of the other things she has done! I should have guessed from the timbre of her voice, I never knew she was quite the singer in her day. Watch her performance in the Pirates of Penzance, the one with Debbie Reynolds. Fantastic.
What a talent. You Brits are just too fortunate with the wellspring of women talent - Judi Dench, Julie Walters, Helen Mirren... :)
I've sometimes thought the "Hyacinth Bucket" character was influenced by the Australian character (as portrayed by Barry Humphries), "Dame Edna Everage." Is that a well-recognized comparison?
There's just something about the vocal inflection and jutting forward of the chin that seems borrowed. And as "Dame Edna" evolved from an "Aunt Edna" character in the early 1970s, "Hyacinth Bucket" not begun keeping up her appearances until 1990, the Humphries character was first.
I rather suspect Patricia Routledge and "Keeping Up Appearances" is as beloved in the UK as Betty White and "The Golden Girls' are in the States.
Although I'm aware "Golden Girls" is also popular in Europe, and, at least among a select demographic who have watched "Keeping Up Appearances" and/or "Hetty Wainthropp Investigates," Miss Routledge is also popular among us in the States too.
hey DO you think you could send me her adress, I wish to send her letter from Czech republic and ask her for autography...I'd be amazing to have it. Please...or anyone else has her adress??? Thank you to all good souls...

But I think if you look on the internet you should be able to find some sort of address or e-mail address for fans to contact her...sorry i couldn't be more helpful though! :)
Hyacinth Bucket has a lot of redeeming qualities. No matter how pretentious she gets, you just love her, especially when she gets unwanted romantic attention from shepherds, etc.
