I clearly remember the great buzz of excitement for me when Slade came storming back into the charts with this song .They weren't as consistently brilliant as they had been in the 1970's but there were still some highlights.'My oh My ' and 'Cest la vie' were two (of several good songs ).

I was there too. Yeah, they stole the show. But it was earned. No one gave them much notice when they went on. But by the end, they owned the festival. Noddy Holders is such a pro. getting the audience to do 'walk on' sealed it. Def Leppard got crucified for trying to follow that though. Joe Elliot caught a party can of beer in the nuts if i remember correctly.

@proslade Have a listen to Birdland. That's Weather Report's best known song. Though you won't find much singing on it. Jaco Pastorius was the bass player. A brilliant piece of music, but I'm not sure why anyone would compare them to Slade. It would be like comparing Let Zeplin To Louie Armstrong.

Yeah, motorhead only had 1 decent song, and don't even compare to Slade, however I will say Fastway compares and even sounds bit like Slade, the music and lead singer. There are some songs that I think could be one or the other.

Have loved them since 71 and was not surprised they stole Reading. What band could turn up virtually un-announced at a major rock festival, after having no hits for four years, being totally written off by the media and steal the show? The mighty Slade, that's who.

I was at Reading '80 and here is my recollection....
39,999 people and me were pissed off that Ozzy's debut was cancelled. As the evening closed in I recall seeing a short stocky skinhead pushing in front of me. He was wearing a denim jacket with the words "Slade ain't dead" embroidered on his jacket.... something was about to happen. It did. Whilst this may not have been the most artistic gig I have seen, it was the rawest, most basic, truest good time gig I have been privelidged to witness.

Def Leppard nearly got canned off when they tried to follow them at Reading. Legend has it that DL were number 3 on the bill, when they heard Slade were replacing Ozzy they insisted on being moved up to Number 2, AFTER Slade.

Who cares who is better than who.. What a load of crap. Slade were fantastic, Noddy had a superb growly voice and I remember them very fondly.. Great stuff.
I was lucky enough to see Slade live, so I know they were an arse kicking hard rock band that could get a graveyard of corpses on their feet.
Trouble is, there is so little live footage and most people just remember 'Merry Xmas' with the silly Glam Rock outfits. Slade loved dressing up, but that was just one phase, they were sharp suited (The 'n' betweens),Skinheads (Ambrose Slade), Glam during their most commercial phase (hence how they're remembered) Don't forget the Heavy Metal Priests look!

Slade would be more at home with the indie bands that are around now. They were a great pub band who got the recognition they deserved, except in The US.

@proslade Have a listen to Birdland. That's Weather Report's best known song. Though you won't find much singing on it. Jaco Pastorius was the bass player. A brilliant piece of music, but I'm not sure why anyone would compare them to Slade. It would be like comparing Let Zeplin To Louie Armstrong.

I had a BBC Friday Rock Show (good old Tommy Vance & Tony Wlison) Special "taped" from Reading 1980.
It featured Slade, Whitesnake, Def Leopard, Budgie and Krokus. ALL the bands did Bloody Brilliant Sets.
It would be good to know if any of this is available on CD or has been uploaded.

I was at Reading '80 and here is my recollection....
39,999 people and me were pissed off that Ozzy's debut was cancelled. As the evening closed in I recall seeing a short stocky skinhead pushing in front of me. He was wearing a denim jacket with the words "Slade ain't dead" embroidered on his jacket.... something was about to happen. It did. Whilst this may not have been the most artistic gig I have seen, it was the rawest, most basic, truest good time gig I have been privelidged to witness.

i saw slade at the reading festival and remember saying to my mate they will either get canned off or go down a storm.

Def Leppard nearly got canned off when they tried to follow them at Reading. Legend has it that DL were number 3 on the bill, when they heard Slade were replacing Ozzy they insisted on being moved up to Number 2, AFTER Slade.
Talk about DUMB!
I got thumbed down for saying that on another Slade thread. Def Leppard fans lurk everywhere, but it is a fact, following Slade was a dangerous think for any band to attempt!

Would have LOVED to have been there, i can imagine a crowd hungry for raw meat after the set, and then on come Def Leppard....i am genuinely surprised they survived

Who cares who is better than who.. What a load of crap. Slade were fantastic, Noddy had a superb growly voice and I remember them very fondly.. Great stuff.

I was lucky enough to see Slade live, so I know they were an arse kicking hard rock band that could get a graveyard of corpses on their feet.
Trouble is, there is so little live footage and most people just remember 'Merry Xmas' with the silly Glam Rock outfits. Slade loved dressing up, but that was just one phase, they were sharp suited (The 'n' betweens),Skinheads (Ambrose Slade), Glam during their most commercial phase (hence how they're remembered) Don't forget the Heavy Metal Priests look!
