This wonderful hymn reminds us that no matter what our lot in life may be, The Good Shepherd Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ is ALWAYS there and ALWAYS shares our trials along with our joys.
St. Columba is one of my all-time favourite hymn tunes. I think this is the best video of it. "The King of Love My Shepherd Is" in particular means a lot to me because my friend played and sang it for me on a pipe organ. I never heard it before. I was so blessed. I still have recordings of it that he did for me. Thanks for sharing all the great videos with us!
The St Columba melody has been used at the Offertory of Mass to the words:
"When we eat this bread and drink this cup,
We proclaim your death Lord Jesus,
Until You come in glory (repeated) ." It may have been back at school, it was from a long time ago that I recall it. Thanks for posting it o8, more great videos please!
One of my favorite hymn tunes. I like that you kept true to the orignal score, which is ancient. Too many musicians "do their own thing" with St. Columba, and the song loses its dignity.
nice playing....I have a Catholic choir CD that is called Magdalen College Choir and the students sings this song very nicely and I have some friends that goes there.
I LOVE THIS VIDEO (and yes, I'm shouting)!! To Organpipe8, can one really learn to play the king of instruments without learning the piano first? I am 49, yet I don't feel it's too late to learn. Please click on my name and contact me. I have a few more questions. Peace and keep playing!
You should learn Piano, the keys and notes are the same but of course the Organ has many other things to consider, all happening at the same time. I suggest you contact your Church Organsit and speak with them †
Your playing is just beautiful. I am also an organist of many years in the AGO and I want you to know how much I love hearing you play. Your selections are wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing such beautiful sacred music.
Lance - this hymn is one of my favorites. It was our longtime choir director's favorite, and when he retired, we sang this as an anthem on his last Sunday. Very moving, and a powerfull simple message. I nothing lack if He is mine.
This is making me cry. I used to listen to my friend practise the pipe organ and this was one of my favourites. Your videos really are awesome, I added this one to my favourites also.
I always loved this hymn - so meaningful and truly one that speaks to the heart. I know it was one of the mymns at Princess Diana's funeral in 1997. It has a couple of different tunes that go with it including "Dominus Regit Me" and the one I especially love, the "Brother James Air." Thanks for such a nice and beautiful hymn again and keep them coming!
This can also be played as ''That Easter Day With Joy Was Bright''

Hello Lance from the isolated Island of Sanday in the Orkney's. Hearing your music on my lap top was lovely, this fine chilly Sunday Afternoon.
