haha, the comments are funny on this one. don't take it too seriously. lol. don't want to end up ass raped over a cover song. this is a pretty easy version of this if you're a musician. had no idea it wasn't a johnny original either. cool.
I'm pretty sure that goldencountry didn't record this version. He or she is just commenting about your lack of knowledge about the genesis of this song, and that fact that he/she enjoyed this song. I just love people like you who have your facts wrong, it's gently and politlely pointed out to you, and then to cover up your ignorance you release a rath of unjustified and misdirected criticism. GROW UP AND LEARN YOUR COUNTRY ROOTS!
Hey, I'm not putting Lefty down. I've never listened to him, so I have no opinion of him either way. It's your version I have an opinion on. It was your version I left feedback on. So again I stand by my original feedback. Let me clarify, I didn't much like "Your version"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You SUCKKKKKKKKK. Is that clear enough for you.
I think one of the most creative versions of this song was done by The Band off their first album, "Big Pink." The rhythm they use gives the feel of a funeral dirge, which is quite appropriate for this mournful tune. This version isn't bad though for just one guy and his acoustic guitar.
Lefty's version is one of the smoothest you'll every hear, and he certainly deserves the credit for debuting this great song to the world. However, he did not write it; MaryJohn Wilkin and Danny Dill wrote it.
Nice job! I ,too, do covers.... Jim Reeves, Frank Sinatra...and others.

Danny DIll actually wrote this song.... not Lefty Frizell. I first heard it done by the Kingston Trio who used a slightly faster tempo.

I wish if people couldn't say anything good they wouldn't say anything at all. Do you sing? And can we hear something you've sung?

BTW I was talking to olebkjck!
I think Steve does a good job of singing it! I am sure he wouldn't of been asked to sing at an event if people didn't think he could sing!

Nice to see someone remember the Great Lefty Frizzell. Nice cover.

well that's what happens when songs are done in different eras. just because one person writes a song dosen't mean they sing it better.

Have you ever heard Lefty's ver?
goldencountry 4 years ago
Johnny recorded the song about 10 years later hardly a differnt era.

Song was made famous by the one and only Johnny Cash. Didn't much like this version. It doesn't work.....

Lefty record and wrote the song. He took it to number 6 in 1959. Cash recorded it too. I get a bit tired of Lefty not getting the credit he deserves.
