I think one of the most creative versions of this song was done by The Band off their first album, "Big Pink." The rhythm they use gives the feel of a funeral dirge, which is quite appropriate for this mournful tune. This version isn't bad though for just one guy and his acoustic guitar.

Johnny recorded the song about 10 years later hardly a differnt era.

Song was made famous by the one and only Johnny Cash. Didn't much like this version. It doesn't work.....

Lefty record and wrote the song. He took it to number 6 in 1959. Cash recorded it too. I get a bit tired of Lefty not getting the credit he deserves.

Lefty's version is one of the smoothest you'll every hear, and he certainly deserves the credit for debuting this great song to the world. However, he did not write it; MaryJohn Wilkin and Danny Dill wrote it.
