It's a story oriented for men (but there's nothing wrong with girls liking it!) so yeah, panty shots and boobs are like a given. The original VN only had sprites and the anime just added more to that. (and DEEN is known for really exaggerating breasts) There's some ecchi here and there but it's not that relevant to consider umineko as an Ecchi genre.

No, that's a really elitist way of looking at it. If you decide to just start a book in the middle, you'll probably have a ton of misconceptions about what's going on. Besides, if you hate the ecchi, blame the animation studio. The original story was a VN.

Well I'm a gay man so the ecchi doesn't do anything for me. That's not why I watch Umineko. And the panty shots every now and then and the big boobs don't make me think of it as ecchi because it's not overt. There's a lot worse stuff out there.

I watch Umineko for Beatrice and Bernkastel, I love their characters. And I like the logic vs. magick theme that the show/VN/whatever presents.

Really though, people here aren't defending it for the small fan service. You have to understand it's for the amazing story. The reason why it might be a little ecchi is because the anime's prime demographic is Japanese men, which unfortunately, there's no way around.

Me on the other hand pretty much just ignores the fan service and pays attention to what's actually going on. You should at least give actual visual novel a chance, The way the story is actually meant to be viewed...

I'm sad to say that any good story is crushed by the ecchi and shows that the creator does not trust the story will deliver enough to make viewers interested.

It's something I can not ignore. But I guess that's a personal preference. I do have a very hard time finding animé that's watchable nowadays, that has story and depth rather then the multitude of clichés animé is poisoned with, and the hormonal fanservice.
