Star Wars is a one night stand. Quick thrills but you know the whole thing wasn't sincere and you were only there for the excitement.
Star Trek is a life long love affair. It can be boring, it can be frustrating. But with all the time you put into it you reap the benefits over the lone haul and you're given treasures that can't be taken away by some fat guy who in the Star Wars shirt who gets Sci-Fi confused with what he's ordering at a fat food joint. Yes that was random.
I dont get why people always compare star trek and star wars.. is it just because both have "star" in the name? Star Trek is science fiction, while Star Wars is not science fiction but of the genre called fantasy (I dont mean that in a derogatory way), so it would be more relevant to compare SW to another fantasy trilogy instead, such as Lord of the Rings. Oh, and also, contrary to popular belief, it is actually possible to love both Star Trek and Star Wars.
Why so serious, fanboys? Star Wars and Star Trek are just movies and tv shows. Not important enough to fight over. It's not Adam's fault for siding with the superior one.
The best difference to say is: Star Trek is more about politics (and so scheming, bribing and betrayal). Star Wars on the other hand is about a small Group of idealists fighting against a corrupt and gruesome government. (isn't that called 'terrorism' today? *waiting for the trolls to come*)
So: if you like prolitics take Star Trek and if you like action take Star Wars.
Star Trek: teaches you how to live peacefully with others, shows tolerance, equality and no bias, a unified mankind that works together to eliminate poverty, war and famine.
Star Wars: teaches you how to make out with your sister.
Here's how Star Trek vs. Star Wars would go: (On Enterprise-E) Picard: "Open channels." Vader: "We are going to destroy Earth." Picard: "Well carry on, regulations are very strict about interfering in other cultures." Vader: "We demand your surrender!" Picard: "Well is that all you want? My accent may be British, but I assure I'm French!" Vader: "COWARDS! We will destroy you as a favor!" (Death Star blows up) Vader: "WHAT? Picard!" Sisko: (Leans in Vader's face in screen) "I'm NOT Picard!"
@SovereignStatesman Bigger and more powerful can often be better, and Star Wars tech is pretty big. But than again, you don't see Vader beaming down to Cloud City, so you may be right that Star Trek tech can be better in terms of being versatile and useful.
You guys know that the Federation and Jedi would probably be the best of friends if they ever met, right? For you Sith fans. . . *scratches head*. . . I dunno, Romulans?
@mathewfinch As a matter of fact... YES! I have watched Star Trek V MANY times before! I've watched all the Trek films, all the Trek series, so I think my opinion is well...(and pardon me if this sounds high and mighty) fairly solid. But ironically, as bad as Star Trek V is, it STILL has a leg up on the Star Wars prequels in that at least it tries to have some character development.
@garamonde don't get me wrong. the badness of ST V in no way excuses the badness of the prequels. My only point is that ST and SW both have their highs and lows. The only real difference is that Brennan and Braga at least have SOME reverence for ST, while George Lucas does not seem to have any reverence for his own creation. IMO, both are absolutely fantastic at points, abysmal at others.
@mathewfinch That is a very good point. I don't know about Rick Berman though... he was responsible for launching Voyager, Enterprise and three very bad TNG movies...
@SovereignStatesman No, I'm talking about the badass Liam Neeson. Ian McDiarmid as the diabolical and awesome Palpatine. Yoda. Mace motherf***ing Windu! I'm talking about the fantastic score by John Williams. Not to mention the space battles, Darth Maul, and the epic duel above the lava in ROTS.
Jar-jar's Benny-Hill battle, the "Ben Hur, done that" podrace, Anakin's snivelly love-whining, the "Gladiator" style arena-battles in the Geonosis coliseum, the "Lost and Foundry" scene in the droid-factory etc.
@SovereignStatesman I'll give you points for the Ben Hur and Lost and Foundry puns, but only in your opinion do the awesome parts I mentioned not make up for them. I just fast forward through the egregious whining parts and Jar-Jar. The Gladiator connection was to real-life blood-sport in Rome, not just the movie. But the factory was a little obnoxious, I'll give you that as well.
@SovereignStatesman A ha. I see. When talking about the connection, all I meant was Lucas was influenced by Rome. And his Pod Race was actually inspired by his real-life experience with racing cars.
@MrImastinker Yeah well it's not inspired enough. I actually prefer a Quiddich scene, it's that bad.
We've SEEN enough Roman films, we don't need more. Lucas simply thinks that anything he does will be boffo, and so he goes where EVERY producer has before.
Even Palpatine taking power by stoking a war was from Spartacus, and a slave becoming a chariot race-driver for his freedom (since pods look just like chariots with 2 horses pulling them-- even the cheater? BEN HUR, DONE THAT!
Yeah, because it's lifted directly from that Popeye cartoon, doing the same basic things right down to the slag-bucket, metal-chopper and swinging hammer that takes 3PO's head off and knocks Popeye for a loop.
Adam is wrong... Deep space 9 was nothing, but star wars episodes I, II and III also sucked. And then you have star trek: enterprise, next generation and voyager vs star wars episodes IV, V and VI.The biggest difference between star wars and star trek, is that star trek good guys don't suck. I mean come on Data is funnier than Han Solo, and Picard better than Luke. The best thing about Star Wars is the dark side: Darth Vader, the stormtroopers, their uniforms and the vehicles.
George Lucus was a trek fan before he made starwars and said himself startrek was more thoughtful and was about important ethics and philosophy, star wars (the original) was a fun boom boom bang, and starwars (The new) was plain dumb.
@TheDuckmonk I prefer Star Wars, but your comment is idiotic. What 3 yr olds can understand convoluted science jargon? They sure as hell can understand lasers, Jar Jar and Ewoks. Dammit, I'm going to have to switch sides if the Star Wars fans get any dumber. And yes I'm super literal, but you can even move them up to atleast 7 years old and they still wouldn't understand the dialogue of Star Trek.
@TheDuckmonk well yours says "Star Wars is Star Trek for three year olds." now the only way that is readable is Star Wars is, Star Trek is for three year olds. Anyone tell me if I'm wrong, I'm not the best on proper grammar, but that's the only way I could understand his statement.

The Death Star could destroy an entire star system too by firing at the sun, triggering a supernova. The catch: it would have to jump into hyperspace (warpspeed in the Trek universe) at just the right moment or be destroyed. Its destruction would mean the empire would have to build another one in order to do it again, and it's not cost effective to keep building structures so large. I agree that the trilithium warhead is more efficient and less vulnerable.
@SovereignStatesman I take it then you've never read the Star Wars books, particularly the series involving the Sun Crusher? It's a little ship (Size of a fighter) that is designed to make stars nova, and was indestructable, they parked it into the Yavin star and it did nothing to the ship, only way to contain it was throw it into a black hole. Han flies it through an Imp SD for the lols.
@SovereignStatesman Stable wormhole, Star Trek used them too. Stargate took what star trek did right, did it better, then didn't do what star trek did wrong (which admitidly isn't much). the wrath of khan, or the one where they go back in time to bring back a whale, to me those two were star trek's best movies i really liked them they also had a great story line, the old star wars had good special effects but the newer star wars movies were just plain garbage the old stuff was really good tho.
YEAH!!! Most Trekkies here probably don't know anything from the Expanded Universe, and can't grasp the full-blown awesomeness of the Original Trilogy.

NEITHER is comparable to the other. If you want to compare Star Trek to something, put it next to Stargate. =P

the wrath of khan, or the one where they go back in time to bring back a whale, to me those two were star trek's best movies i really liked them they also had a great story line, the old star wars had good special effects but the newer star wars movies were just plain garbage the old stuff was really good tho.

YEAH!!! Most Trekkies here probably don't know anything from the Expanded Universe, and can't grasp the full-blown awesomeness of the Original Trilogy.

Star Trek has better movies, TV series and Canon.
Star Wars has better Video Games, Books and 'non' Canon works.
