I was going to tell you these pictures should be in HD, but some how it is offering a more cohesive combination with this talented music. They become more comforting when i use my imagination. Also, im high.
this song is a breed of its own. I think it fits the lyrics extremely well...maybe better than MM. Trailer Trash just has a southern aura around it, and Iron Horse captures it so well.
@aurhys I dunno man, this sounds so much different then Isaac's that it almost makes it better due to the fact that it has Isaac's amazing lyrics with a brand new sound.
They're both amazing bands, but covers that redefine the song are endlessly better than seeing how close you can get to sounding the same.
imo these covers are great, but the vocals are what turn me off. its a little too true to the bluegrass genre for my taste. and i like bluegrass. I just dont think the vocal style works well with modest mouse. everything else is terrific.
im by far one the BIGGEST modest mouse fans... i have every cd and every ep they've ever made and i usually hate covers... but i have to give it to these guys... AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME job on these songs!
@danslaughter well he would throw up at just about anytime, he's a heroin addict. But I think he would dig it. How many bands you got covering you? I think he'd be flattered.
@deathcouch Isaac isn't a heroin addict. He experimented with heroin, and may of been addicted at sometime, but with a wife and child I don't think he's looking for a good 'ole fix of heroin
I wouldn't say that they completely missed the point. They made their own point. In this cover, the arrangement and the feel try to (imo) to convey the sense that there is nothing wrong with that style of life and that they are proud of it. Nothing wrong with that. The MM original is completely different because Isaac was there, and wanted to escape it. He put his sense of disillusion and despair at his inability to leave that life behind into the MM version. That's why it's so depressing.
sorry the guitar sounds good and they are talented but the vocals completely ruin the song. They completely missed the point clearly, this is not a happy song, the lonesome crowded west is a desperate album filled with rage and does not deserve to be censored by some country poser.
yeah i like this version way better its like they make it sound sincere which is a funny thing i guess to think that maybe they make it sound like a sad song which i guess i could be to someone
Where is the picture from at 2:26? I'm biking through Oregon / Northern California in about two weeks. Would really love to stop at a waterfall like that.
I could show this to some of my country-loving friends and they would never guess that Modest Mouse had originally done it. The lyrics even fit the tear-in-my-beer makeover. That's not a good or bad thing; just saying.
But I do love getting people to unwittingly love a song by a band they "hate." (Unfortunately, many of friends have no taste for Modest Mouse...)
This version is waaaay too up beat for the lyrics. Don't get me wrong, they did a great job performing the song; but the lyrics just sound condescending when sung with a happy voice.
Agreed to a degree. I think that Iron Horse, rather than copying Modest Mouse, changed the shit outta the song and made it their own in a way. I still think Modest Mouse is better, but i have a lot of respect for these guys.
Doesn't hold the same emotional power for me without some little things, like taking the god damn out of I'm such a jerk. Loses that balance of desperation and hopelessness that issac's crashy guitar complements so well. And the bass, kind of pushing it forward.. fuck. So good.
Certainly Iron's not going for the same thing, modest mouse has that feeling down already. But it just feels like it doesn't fit well in the blue grass, talented as these guys are.
Yeah they are great band. Gillian Welch has some nice live vids on here. "Caleb Myer"and "Miss Ohio" live, oh also there's a great vid of Old Crow on the Marty Stuart Show. Just type in Old Crow Marty Stuart. Think you might like one of the 3 lol. I got into bluegrass about the time the " O' Brother Where Art Thou" soundtrack came out. Although I remember listening to the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band when I was real young.
As a younger child my family would drive up to Jedidiah Smith to meet all our Oregonian relatives for week long camp trip.
Have you kayaked (inflatable) down the Smith River? I also did a fishing trip on it during a different time of the year.
So... many... memories. I used to just ride my bike around the entire camp ground with my cousin. Literally the entire time. The foot bridge into Stout Grove? Ya, we swam under that all day.
@Assaultpredator never kayaked it but have spent the last 10 yrs traveling up and down the west coast in a bus, and always made a point of stoping and doing a bit of hiking in that spot. If u can believe it i have driven my 35ft bluebird through the park, talk about cutting it close on that 1 lane road.
