3/4 H&S COMM '04. I only spent a month on the island and I regret not getting to stay the whole six months but I had to take a flight to Kuwait and then north to Iraq.
I was there with 3/9 in '93 a few of the big barracks were up but there were still a lot squad bays...but I hear Schwab has been completely renovated...too bad this video didn't show down by the movie theater.
i was there with 3/4 lima co in 95-96. remember the rumble on new years eve between 3/4 and 1/2? went back in 97-98 had the pleasure of living in the dickey baracks the last udp. great video brings back alot of memories.
I was in Okinawa from 1987-1989 with 3rd Recon Bn. and lived in Decky Barracks. This video might help with your objective. I shot this video from the SPIE rig in late June 1989. I have many pictures if you need them.
I was with wpns co 2/4 in 79. my barn was right across street frm snack bar. I would love to see if that "BAR ST." sign is still welcoming grunts into henoko. We went to fuji and hell rained down on us
1964-65 with Flames 3/3, later joined India 3/4 in Feb 66 while at Schwab before they returned to Vietnam. Its amazing the changes 40 years brings, especially the resorts across Orwan Bay. Different time, different culture...back when greenbacks were the local currency. Thanks for refreshing the memory, Semper Fi.
Great to hear from the 'Old Corps'. I was just getting out of boot camp during your time there. My yen/greenbacks memory was getting over 300yen to the dollar, in Oct 2007 it was more like 111 yen to the dollar. It was very hard to figure where everything had been at Camp Schwab. Only the old O club and 1/9 Bn Hqs building remained after 35 years.
From what I saw things looked pretty much the same. The large apartment size building there was used to house permanent personnel when we were there. If my memory has ir right that was just across from the USO. Been a little while. Had some good memories of Schwab, some not so good. But I wouldn't trade my experiences for anything. We were down the hill in the open squadbays....actually they were 2 man cubicles. Spent a lot of time and money at the snack bar.
Thanks for your update to add to the others. Fun having so many Marines contribute their memories to these videos. If I had know it was so popular I would have tried to provide more details.
Wow, I was at Schwab in '85 and '87 on two UDPs with 2/4. Geez just looking 'round looks like nothing's changed too much in the last 20 years or so. Can't say I miss the place, but I've always thought about visiting someday.
I was at Camp Schwab for only two months in 1972 so maybe the changes I saw were completed by your arrival. There was hardly any buildings left from 1972.
Watching the viedo brought back memeories from when I was stationed there. I was there 91-92 when I was with 3rd bn 9th Marines. The bbq's, e club, snorkling, and cleaning weapons in the barracks. Good stuff.
Nice, I was in 3/9 as well. But I got to the unit in Sep 1992. Was in Somilia Africa with in two months of being there, lol. I was on the color guard for the disbanning of 3/9 the day we went to 3/4. Semper Fi
I was there in 93 to 94 and 95 to 96 ( two 6 month UDP's ). I was with 3/9 the first trip and same unit under 3/4 the last trip. We too had the very last barracks down near the water front. Was there for the typhoons and all. Loved the place, even though there was not much there as compared to today for things to do. MY father was there in the early 80's, but was on Hansen. Semper Fi and thanks for the video.
You mention typhoons. A month after I arrived with had a Super Typhoon hit the island while I was at Camp Schwab. Interesting experience as it circled the island before coming right across.
How much was it to fly back there? I take it you had to get a lic and all to drive ( Jsofa )? Rented car? Me and other former Marine friend that was back there are talking about going back to do as you did.
1/2 checking in. 1985 maybe 86. hubba hubba honcho. Kinville. MONKEY MEAT !!! God Bless the Marines, I sure had a good time, now residing in TN. Ya'll take care
I was also on Schwab, 1981-1982. 3rd Bn, 4th Mar. Div., Wpns. Co., 81's Plt. We had the barracks all the way at the end of the camp right on the waterfront! They were all open squad bays then, but duty there was good. Always a WestPac to look forward to. Those were the days indeed.
Thanks much for posting this vid. Post more if you can!
I was there with 2/2 fox company in late 1982/1983
