For most DIY or handyman jobs, people tend to use the ready mix, all purpose products. The downfall is that it takes so long to dry. Could you use salt with the premix product to speed up the process?
Thank you Tennex01 for posting such a well done series. I've recently gotten a hole in my ceiling, and I was going into the repair "blind" until I saw your videos. you saved me hours of work and some money, too. Thank you kindly for taking the time to put these videos online.
If it is a gloss or semi gloss paint I scratch up the surface back the the plasterboard underneath with a sharp object. If it is a flat paint I don't worry so much.
If you used sand paper it would need to be very coarse to scratch the surface rather than smoothing it.
well thats one way of doing it but this is how I would repair it by removing the whole plasterboard out and replacing it with a new plasterboard it will save a lot of work but still its good Job been done there
Yes that is another way of doing it. The problem is it creates a lot of un-neccessary work. You would have 2 butt joints to trowel, you would have to replace the cornice as well. This patch, done this way is totally concealed and will never crack and takes only about an hour to do.
Depending which country you are from it is called varying names. Here in Australia we refer to it as" top coat" or it can be "all purpose compound" the later can be used for all three coats but it is an air drying compound and depending on temperatures can take 24 hrs or more to dry.
I guess us plasterers want some more of that global warming to assist drying LOL.
I want to thankyou for making this video - a possum ate a hole in my cieling and two in my walls - your video has made it easy for me to repair - :) Would you mind making a video on how to catch a possum lol :)
nice vid man thanx will help me. only one problem with this patern on the ceiling i have. how would i make it look the same like the whole ceiling for my whole ceiling is got a wave like patern on it?
I use cornice adhesive as a base coat and top coat to finish off.
Depending where you are these products will go under a different name. The salt will work with any kind of setting plaster to make it set quicker. It won't have any effect on a drying compound.
Salt will make cornice adhesive set very quickly. How much you use deciedes to how long to set. Take enough out of the dish to tape in or fill a hole and cover it with salt mix it in it will set in about 5 minutes a bit less salt the longer it will take to set.
When I am using salt I just leave the salted mix on my trowel and as soon as this starts setting I know I can scrape back and recoat the work.
Don't be shy about how much salt you add to the mix. Just mix it in well.Cheers Rod
Nice work and great video. Thank you for taking the time!

is the top caot Sheetrock?
sullivan2805 2 years ago
Sheetrock is a brand name.
The final coat is a pre-mixed product.
There are 2 types of pre-mixed product, one type is an a"all purpose cement" which can be used for all 3 coats,
As these are "drying compounds", they take longer to dry between coats.
The other is a "top coat" only.
They are very similar products, both comming under many different brand names.
