The plural of anecdotal is NOT data. There are millions and millions of scientists who would like to prove this theory and publish it in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. That being said, I'll go with coconut oil, flaxseed + cottage cheese, snake oil, and prayer until they are dissproven. If you get a few months of placebo effect, go for it!
Hey, if this works for people then it's a great thing. I don't care if CBN did the story or not. If it works, it works. It's certainly worth a try for people with nothing to lose.
@RedTailedTuna LOL I'm telling you it always happens. I beleive these people who can't keep god and religion out of these various topice just don't have a brain. I mean litterally no education so they turn to words already written some where else to quote. They are to be pitied.
@RedTailedTuna Its because many Christians and Atheists believe that there is war going on based upon belief of God or disbelief of God and control of people due to both, when in actuality it has only to do with the freedom of choice, and the fight to control that. They are both wrong.... and yet are fighting for exactly the very same result, dumb.
I've gone to Bible studies and the like. I've been a somewhat regular church goer for much of my life. To me it's nonsense. How "deeply" have you gone is relative. As for church, I have enjoyed the fellowship, the human interactions. Some of the messages squeezed from scripture are good and positive. But, to me, the basis for it is all nonsense and not truthful.
@MrWagman11 Yeah! And while they're at it they could pray for God to give them money so they don't have to go to work every day. Perfect health so they don't have to eat properly or exercise. And to give them responsible kids so they don't have to bother instructing them with life lessons.
@MrWagman11 You have no concept of God's role in the universe. Believing in God doesn't mean you abdicate all responsibility for yourself and those around you. And it doesn't mean your life will be effortless and without negative aspects.
@MrWagman11 Let me check...Nope...No bristles here. You're perfectly entitled to believe what you want. I believe there is a supernatural power that created what we see. This actually takes less "faith" than to believe it all happened by chance. I'm not suggesting that Christians necessarily have a perfect understanding of who/what God is, but the universe and the life in it didn't just come about without exterior influence.
@MrWagman11 And perhaps I need to restate: I have no problem with your choice to believe that. Would you like to give a specific or two as to what strikes you and science as ridiculous about the Bible?
@beaman444 Obviously written by man for man. Does it every strike you as strange that some thing as powerful as God, who can create the universe down to the minutest detail, wasn't able to put together something better and more coherent than the Bible to deliver his instruction and wisdom? God must have passed science class and flunked composition.
@MrWagman11 I don’t agree that God created everything that we now see. I believe the universe and life were given a “rolling” start and natural forces (initially put in place by God) then took over. As such there is actually some unpredicability – randomness if you will – that went into what we have now. But I am interested in what you specifically find ridiculous about the Bible. You didn’t give me that.
@MrWagman11 Young earth creationists actually have some challenging points when you research them. I’m not one, but I believe earth-history is likely quite different from what mainstream science feeds us. I hate to be redundant but I’ve had discussions a number of times about the “ridiculous” Bible and seldom am I given any specific examples. Makes me think you haven’t read it. Am I right?
@beaman444 I don't like the fact that there is no Commandment forbidding slavery. Why? Because slavery was common at the time. I don't like the fact that a supposed loving God is likely the biggest mass murderer in history.
@MrWagman11 I can’t argue with that. The view is that the Old Testament was meant to show the world how lacking our way of doing things is; and that the New Testament is the “new and better” way that we should be living. When Christ says that all law is summed up in the one commandment to love one another and if you do this you don’t need to worry about anything else; does that put the Bible in a better light for you?
@beaman444 I love that argument. The New Testament is the "new and better" way. What nonsense. The all-knowing and perfect God had to revise the Old Testament to make it better. Sounds pretty human to me. Guess God isn't perfect after all. Also, remember that the 10 Commandments are in the Old Testament. And "Love one another..." is not one of the Commandments.
… There are many statements from science that only make sense if you include God in your worldview. Choosing only one: Sir Fred Hoyle (atheist) calculated that the chance of obtaining the required set of enzymes for even the simplest living cell was one in 10^40,000. Just gathering the enzymes; not for creating life. There are 10^80 atoms in the universe. Atoms in 1,000,000 universes = 10^86. So the number here is infinity for all intents and purposes.
@beaman444 This certainly isn't proof of a God. This is proof of something fantastic and extraordinary. Because we do not have the answer for it simply means we do not have the answer for it. It does not mean "God did it."
@MrWagman11 “Nonsense and not truthful” without details makes it difficult for me to respond. All I can say is that I have studied the Bible in some detail and not found it so. Many specific charges have been levelled at the Bible and over time, as more info comes to light they fall away one by one.
I didn’t “deny that where one is born generally determines what religion you will follow.” In fact I stated it. But that’s not why I choose my beliefs (quite different from what I was taught) now.
@beaman444 You obviously are too intelligent to believe in God creating the world in 7 24-hour days, or a talking snake convincing Eve to eat and apple, or Noah gathering all land animals in an ark. But I guess you believe that Jesus was born of a Virgin. He was hung to death on a cross and resurrected after three days.
@MrWagman11 I believe that when acting within the universe God acts within the laws of the universe. Acknowledging that we know almost nothing of the potential of these laws, much of what God does appears to us to be impossible -miraculous. Also, God exists in dimensions of reality that we do not. He is a spirit and is therefore not limited to the physical 3 dimensions (with the physical laws) as we are. Scientists speak of 11 (and more) diminsions –imagine the power available.
… The only commandment of the NT is to LOVE: “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another….” – Jesus. Takes care of slavery quite well I should think – at least for anyone who understands what love means. …
@beaman444 How 'bout this. Don't you think it would have been more effective for Jesus to have said, "No one shall keep slaves." He didn't. But you say Jesus was about love, therefore everyone should be able to interpret that to mean people should not keep slaves. Because God could not inspire man to write concisely, Christianity is now made up of more than 30,000 different sects. God is quite the communicator.
@MrWagman11 You haven’t read the Bible; certainly not with a mind that was trying to understand it. Like reading your vehicle’s owner’s manual while refusing to believe that horsepower doesn’t come from little horses in the engine. There was no “revision”. The Bible (both OT & NT) specifically states that the Old Covenant was temporary and to be replaced by the New. The Old was all that people could understand at the time – still is for many. …
@beaman444 I have not read every word in the Bible. But what I have read is to me obviously written by man, inspired by man and for man. I take it you believe Christianity is one and only true religion.
@MrWagman11 Let me suggest (again) that you have probably read very little of the Bible; and none of it with an open mind. Being honest, this wouldn’t lend itself to a very reliable interpretation of any document, would it.
I consider myself a Christian but many Christians might not agree. I believe in a properly understood Bible, which for me includes a belief that people of other religions also receive God’s Grace.
@beaman444 Like most Christians, you believe you know how to read and understand the Bible while many others do no. Most Christians I know would not consider you a Christian because of your belief that people of other religions also receive God's grace. Good for you. If there is a God, I would believe his grace would extend to everyone. Meanwhile, you've put your own spin on Christianity. So you can easily understand why there are more than 30,000 different sects within Christianity.
@MrWagman11 I can agree with most of this comment. Where I disagree: Most people, Christians included, abdicate their responsibility to understand difficult issues; and believe what they’re told from “authorities” – so their “authorities” are the ones who “understand”. I don’t have a “spin”, I’ve read and reasoned – God gave us all a brain. I’ve given up on Churches and “authorities” so I don’t belong to ANY of the “sects”. I simply believe what I have learned with a mind that looks for truth.
@beaman444 As have I, with the exception that I don't believe in the God of the Bible. I just don't see any credible proof for the existence of God. Like you I've used research and reason to come to this conclusion.
@MrWagman11 But how deeply have you gone? Have you really tried to understand the Bible? Does it contain info that you find nonsensical? For me, the existence/nature of God is about as important a worldview consideration as it gets; so it is essential to put in the time and effort that the topic requires.
Eg: Is 1 in 10^40,000 not an indication for you that your 99% certainty may be a little inflated? Actually, we experience 1% possibilities daily, so even at 99% I would pursue the matter.
@beaman444 I've gone to Bible studies and the like. I've been a somewhat regular church goer for much of my life. To me it's nonsense. How "deeply" have you gone is relative. Buddhism -it has no defined God – God is relative to culture. For me, reality dictates that God has to be an absolute being.
Hinduism -again very relative. Can believe almost anything, even atheism.
Islam –a number of tenets that I disavow.
Mormonism –chock full of contradictions and impossibilities.
