@HighlanderWeert The Tyrell Corporation's motto is "More Human Than Human", and arguably Roy Batty is the most 'human' of the characters presented. The androids in the movie show empathy and concern for one another, unlike those in PKD's novel, and unlike the cold, indifferent, impersonal 'human' masses we see thronging about in the LA of the future. I'd say that's a fairly good sell of Transhumanism, but maybe that's just my take on it.
@fr277 You talk bull . ALIEN = SPACE the point being space... BLADE RUNNER = FUTURE EARTH the point being earth. Blade runner is unique and will remain as such... My point being Blade runner is a single movie (fantastic) Alien VS Predator is a joke. so when you look at it like that (plus all the other crap alien movies) not including ALIENS... only one of the two is timeless
@fr277 Are you kidding me? Both are timeless classics. I think Blade Runner is better than Alien because of the deeper underlying themes, but both are awesome.
In the book deckard is a cynical bounty hunter ! His first words after he shot Baty dead are:" Androids are stupid!!". And he doesn't get more human. Pris cuts spider's legs off with scissors. Baty is some kind of Mars mine worker under drugs. Luba is an opera singer. and they 're longing to fuse with Mercer watching Buster friendly & his friendly friends on tv. R Scott just took the basis of the novel and turned it into a sci-fi thriller. Go get the book it's worth reading.
It's amazing to see what R. Scott did with the Characters of Roy Baty and DECKARD (among others) He made a great movie , unfortunatly it 's has nothing in common with the novel it's supposed to be based on. There is definitely a movie called : Blade runner and a novel called : do androids dream of electric sheep! Phlip K Dick died before the released of the movie and the little he saw he didn't like ( with reason i must agree!) .
Really? even though Phillip was initially reluctant at the scripting stage, he supported the film after watching a few scenes and wrote a letter declaring "Blade Runner is going to revolutionize our conceptions of what science fiction is and, more, can be."
And to think this wouldn't,t be in the movie at all if Rutgar had not thought these up. He should,ve received more credit for that for sure. I don,t know what the Lady Gaga comment was all about, but for whatever reason I,m glad I got to see it, and keep the positive thoughts and forget about the rest. Thanks again!
Of course, not to put a dampener on things but the movie was designed to sell transhumanism, once you get your head round that and put it to the side........still an AWESOME movie and one I have huge fondness of :)
@vespasianlegx11 What does Lady Gaga and take that have to do with this clip? I like Gaga and I also love this movie. A lame attempt to get people to like your comment.
What the movie is saying is that replicants and humans are the same. Apparent differences in physical and intellectual capabilities are insignificant. We have the same dilemma: trying to figure out if there is a meaning to our existence during our lifetime. When Deckard asks Bryant, "How can it not know what it is?", that is a question for us about ourselves. The movie very subtly questions perceptions of reality.
Most people dont understand what is replicant, they are not robots but but human beings made of "pieces" chosen among stored organ collections, so the the human born on this body started his life like adult on his capabilities but a child in memories, a new human being generated by organic tecnology and treated like robot or 5class citizen with no rights, the film show us the life of these edge people and their pursuit for self understanding.
@necromancer2005AD all music by VANGELIS is fantastic, but the music for Bladerunner is perfect as it creates an eerie picture of a future, which hopefully will be less bleak. To me, Bladerunner is a composition of amazing visual and audible effects... my hair stands up when I watch and listen to the movie on my home theater... AND YESSS, the performance of Rutger Hauer is one of his best (if not the best in his career. By the way, the words he speaks before he dies are not the original ones...
Nobody should live life without seeing this movie at least once for this scene alone. Still remains my favorite and one of the most impacting scenes, to me, I've ever watched from a film.
Would you like to see your consciusness with your bare eyes? look up in the sky through the stars, to the neverending cosmic void....that's it! that's your consciusness and Mind, not int the brain.
I tried to copy the visual aesthetics of this scene for one of my finals at film school. I love this scene in Blade Runner and didn't really do it justice... but do you guys mind checking it out and letting me know what you guys think? Thanks. :) youtube.com/watch?v=YOphFl88U-g
In another tribute video of this piece of art that this movie is, an Irish guy said that back in the 80's at the age of 17 when he watched Blade Runner, entered the movies theater as a boy and exited it like a grown man...................it personally, took me 31 years to become a man I guess. Blade Runner is so much more than just a movie; it's a philosophical manifesto about existence and all that this includes.
It again proves the thing that writing + music alone can make a movie/scene. We don't need to see C-beams or Tannhouser gate here, we would even be worse off with watching these things Batty is talking about.... the man's talking about his experiences, his memories, things that make him what he is...
Satan is only the name of the enemy, "the one who opposes".Once we clearly understand his true name,Lucifer, the light, the Star of Morning, than we only begin to comprehend his real essence...
And Rutger Hauer improvised nearly all of that dialogue. Just goes to show what a brilliant actor he is. Mind you, I've always considered Roy Batty to be among his best performances. Batty clearly sees himself as Lucifer from Milton's "Paradise Lost".
@RamBam3000 No he didn't. He simply cut down the original dialogue for that scene. That shouldn't take away from his performance but you are perpetuating a myth.
This is what life is about. Yesterday is gone. You only have today to be humane.
________
I watched this movie for the first time at its second premiere with a friend a few years ago. Probably one the best masterpieces of all time, past, present and future.
Before commenting on some of the tracks always sit and listen all over the song.
My feelings on this are as follows .. I wonder what is the meaning of life What is the purpose to exist; time flies without noticing it for we must find the source that will regenerate or will keep us immortal. . until the universe die
The imagery and music gave me goosebumps...it was glorious. And also, I just realized Rutger Hauer is in TWO of my top 5 favorite movies: Hobo With a Shotgun and Blade Runner.
@vespasianlegx11 Originally, Roy Batty (Rutger Hauer) was to have a lengthy monologue just prior to his death, as written by David Webb Peoples. Hauer felt this didn't help in creating any dramatic impact in the scene, so he removed much, keeping the pieces he liked, and then added the last two lines, "All those moments will be lost like tears in rain. Time to die."
Taken from IMDB Trivia section. Thought you might like to know that.
@28Zeppelin Ridley Scott has been working on a new Alien prequel called 'Prometheus' - by the sound of it and the cast involved it definitely warrants anticipation..
@dasdasist Vangelis is unique. And if there is someone as good as him, the media wouldn't expose him. Society wants it simple, loveless and generic; no feelings; no music.
@dasdasist I don't know about that. Just recently, The Lovely Bones had a simply amazing soundtrack. Sure, the film was a bit meh (though enjoyable) so I will grant that films which are both great AND have great soundtracks are incredibly rare.

@ evilbones .76 .althought this is not my all time favourite film .this scene definately is .he is speaking for all of us .i have just told my wife that i want this played at my funeral.to your father god bless .r i p .
@studiosguignol Not true, actually. Hauer simply cut down the original speech written by David Peoples. Still, an epic piece of cinema and truly touching.
I seen things you civillians wouldn't beleive. I have watched APC on fire off the road to Bagdad. I've seen IED's detonate at in the dark at Kandahar. All those moments in time will be lost like tears in the rain.
not just the best scene in this film for me the best scene ever .hes speaking for all of us .the words are so poignent .weve all seen things and done things in life .and we all have to go .
Blade Runner is a great lesson in life. Although we can not have the wonderful experience that replicants had in their brief moment of life, we should thank and play hard every moment of our short existence on this planet unique and wonderful called "Earth", as the time scale, the existence of mankind is just a breath.
"He was just a man" No, he was more than *Just* a man, he was the first of many. And his flood will be our end- the cogs are turning metaphorically into actuality.
Honest now ... are you serious that you disliked this ART? With what criteria? I can understand the freedom of choice. I can't understand how somebody hasnt the ability to understand something so important as CREATIVITY IN MAXIMUM. This is unique. First in its era. Use your brain for a while ...
The irony is that the replicant finally realizes his profound desire to live but realizes that , in the end life itself is precious. and therefore allows his hunter, Deckard, to live when he could have easily killed him. Makes Deckard think twice about whether these replicants indeed have some humanity that Mr Tyrell successfully implanted in them. Who is now more "human"?? He is in love with one who doesn't know she is one, but he, himself, may be a "replicant" as well. Epic movie.
@jcomd this scene makes me cry always...is the definite proof about the high degree of humanity of the replicant, considered a simple machine by their creators. The music is perfect to be focused to the desire to live and get recognition as a being, human or not, totally deserving to exist.
I seen things you civillians wouldn't beleive. I have watched APC on fire off the road to Bagdad. I've seen IED's detonate at in the dark at Kandahar. All those moments in time will be lost like tears in the rain.

Blade Runner is a great lesson in life. Although we can not have the wonderful experience that replicants had in their brief moment of life, we should thank and play hard every moment of our short existence on this planet unique and wonderful called "Earth", as the time scale, the existence of mankind is just a breath.

I truly think a remake would be good for this movie..it will not be exactly the same, but it would be nice, just like they did with Tron
