The thing is, I don't believe it's been established in Equestria that ponies consider athleticism or competitiveness to be an abnormal trait in females. Rainbow Dash is hardly the only pony we've seen who is competitive and acts tough: look at Applejack, or Trixie, or Luna. Plus, a society that is roughly 80% female would naturally have a greater number of female ponies taking "masculine" roles.

Now that I think about it, the only pony who seems to have ANY sense of gender politics is Rarity.

@fluffsies1 Indeed. The difficult part for people like me who realize that the whole 'RBD = lesbian' meme is a little offensive, is that in the world of internet humor, having a serious conversation about prejudice is impossible.

Therefore, I've just resorted to making sexual jokes about RBD and male ponies whenever feasible, in order to fight the stereotype (fortunately, the show's animators have given us plenty of resources). It's not a perfect solution, but it's the best option we have.

From a scientific viewpoint...everyone except Rarity and Spike are bisexual. It's Schrödinger's pony. A pony can either be gay or straight, like the cat can be either alive or dead. Until the show proves to us that they are one way or another, they are gay AND straight, like the cat is alive AND dead. And if you like people from your sex and people from the opposite sex, you are, by definition, bi. Rarity was attracted to Blueblood and Spike's attracted to her, so they're both straight. Problem?

I don't think she wants people assigning arbitrary, unconfirmed sexualities (or any character trait, really) to the characters, because that gets in the way of the show's main idea of showing kindness and compassion to others regardless of differences between people. I think she was saying "Maybe she's a lesbian, or maybe she's just a tomboy, but in the end, what's the difference?"
