The Mariekerk was the "Claymont Victory" Built in 1945 at Bethlehem Steel ,Fairfield, Baltimore. She was scrapped in 1970. My ticket then said depart Rotterdam on 2 Aug 1954 but actually left on the 5th. Arrived Hong Kong on 12 Sept. Captain was L. Luidinga. Crew numbered 53. Food was very Dutch;lots of pancakes.Bathrooms were down the hall. There is a "Lane Victory" in San Pedro, CA. What a trip!! Robert.
@rluning Great to hear of a fellow passenger. I boarded the Mariekerk in July 1949 and arrived early September in Hong Kong. A walla walla picked me up. There was no laundry on board. Washing was done in the ports of call. Genoa being the first. I have two clips on YouTube about my voyage.
Fantastic!! A time when a ship looked like a ship. Finally found such a video. Straat Banka was scrapped in 1978. By the way I also traveled on the "Mariekerk" in 1954 from Rotterdam to Hong Kong. Oh, thank you so much Mr. Rogge. The very best to you . Robert in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

No, I'm sorry but I don't remember what the life boats looked like then.

Love seeing these old films. This one does not disappoint! The film is so clear here. That must have been some expensive, high quality film!
