Did CBS hire someone that was working alongside Ted Turner (who at that point had become infamous for his "colorized" versions of classic black and white movies on his varied cable networks) during Turner's failed takeover attempt of CBS?
I wonder what it is that make these retro commercials so special. I guess we just associate them with a simpler time in life. It'ssort of the same as watching an old home movie of ourselves. :)
Yes, I do. I need to transfer some tapes to dvd, and hopefully edit them down to upload. Maybe between now and december if i'm lucky. thanks for the support!
didn't mean to sound like i have nothing planned. i actually have some things ready to edit and upload. hopefully, i'll have a few uploaded throughout the season.
Though I was only 1 when these commercials were recorded, I still appreciate these commercials, particularly the McDonald's commercials and the CBS Special Presentation bumper. Even into the mid '90s, Christmas still seemed very special and more fun.
Don't get me wrong, Christmas in the '00s is still fun, but the '90s were so much better. Nowadays, McDonald's doesn't even show/make Christmas commercials anymore!
I agree, too. The commercials, the tv specials, the toys. There was just something more magical about it. I was commercial, yes, but there was an obvious holiday charm back then. I rarely see I holiday commercial I like nowadays.
@Roadgeek You can blame the soccer moms for doing that. They sued because them and their children got fat from eating McDonald's So instead of taking accountability for their weight gain, they blamed the company.
That means we don't have pleasure of seeing commercials like these, because this would appeal to kids and then the kids will cry to their mommy and daddy about wanting to go there. We can't have that.
I agree. Remember when McDonald's would just have heartwarming holiday commercials for the hell of it? They weren't touting the latest sandwich, they just told a simple story with Ronald. Despite being a little commercial, it was the true Christmas spirit.
I remember this past Christmas (and other recent years), there were absolutely no McDonald's Christmas commercials! It's really depressing to see Ronald McDonald, Grimace, and the whole gang have been minimized to such low priorities these days.
That Kodak commercial brings back memories... paints a powerful message in picture and song... I think that needs to brought back this holiday season.... I was 10 when this aired, when Christmas was joyful instead of greedy....
Agreed. I was just having the same convo with my cousin. It's sad how fast Christmas went from being a joyful, loving holiday to nothing but greedy and money hungry commercial items. Sure, back in the day so many businesses had commercials for the season, but it wasn't really about the product.
There are som really weird newsbreaks in this commercial collection. "A baby takes a trip thru an airport xray machine" and "find some charms against death." What the hell were you watching, Retro Reese?=)
just holiday specials. weird how the adult commercials are mixed in with the kids ones. our local news is full of crap, btw. one time, a major story was an elvis impersonator skydiving. that's "news" for you.
My favorite is Garfield as always! Love the one for Rescue 911 as well! Ahhh how I miss these old commercials! The ones out nowadays (Holiday or otherwise) suck!

I remember that Home Alone preview, lol. It's still a good movie for Christmas, though my parents still don't quite get it, hehe.

That Kodak commercial was beautiful. And it's very true, at Christmas you shouldn't be afraid to "let you true colors show." ;)

I liked that CBS Special bumper.
I never get tired of seeing Home Alone every Christmas, or the second one. Both better than the 3rd and 4th.
Garfield was definitely one of my favorite Saturday morning cartoons as a kid.

I totally agree. Commercials have really lost their creative edge.
The 80's were really Garfield's most successful decade, so that show was really awsome.
