Great stuff man. I was just looking at this tune in the real book so i thought id search it. I noticed the name "Scott Lafaro" on the lead sheet and I've heard that he's one of the best bassists. I agree that your tone sounds exactly like jaco. Keep up the amazing stuff!
well played, I have always wanted to play bass, but never learned. I love the bass, and list Mingus, Haslip, Pastorius, Brown,Lefaro as some of my faves. Keep playing and ignore the naysayers
Really great playing, do not listen to these other pinheads.... your tone and feel are just right, and besides... we are all a "work in becoming!! Blessings and thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks! I'm using Thomastik-Infeld Acousticore (bronze wound, nylon-core) strings. They have a very warm tone. I probably had some bass boost and treble cut on the preamp too, though I don't remember exactly now.
Hey, you are correct! Thanks for the bass! Can't tell you how many good things have come from this bass, and the 6-string fretted Kompact that I ordered from Mike later on. Love them both!
'Sunday at the Village Vanguard' - I agree with you Mr Bagley - amazing album!
Brilliant playing on this and all your vids. I'm a lazy bassist and you're inspiring me to get back to studying. Time for me to dig up my copy of 'Solo Bass Concepts' by Marc Foster and Chuck Sher me thinks...
I like the transparent sound of the Coda and it's a great fit for the Rob Allen with it's not so boomy lows and very resonate mids and highs. This outfit is also a nice complement for my main band which is acoustic oriented and includes a hand drumming percussionist and harpist (Celtic and world music)
I gig a lot and love walking from my car with this pretty powerful rig and including the bass am still only carrying a total of 55lb My former amp, an SWR Workingmans 12, sounded pretty OK but was too heavy and not loud enough, particularly when playing outdoors. I am also a new upright player and the Acoustic Image combos are very big with that community.
Hi, I actually play through an Series II Coda R combo.I purchased it in the spring of '06. At the end of the Series II run Acoustic Image made a limited amount of 600watt Coda's (300watt was the standard)which I believe are simply Coda's with Focus guts. Given all of the power I decided to purchased a series II extension cabinet which has the identical speaker configuration of their combos (same for series III) a 10", 5" and 1" tweeter. (I will post more about this)
I thought it might be through a DI. I like the sound of your Kinal which is similar to the bass I play, a Rob Allen Mouse (short scale). I use a 600 watt acoustic Image amplifier with an extension speaker
Cool, Rob Allens are sweet basses too! I actually just got an Acoustic Image Clarus 2R (series III). I thought about getting a the Focus (is that what you have?), but I don't really need the extra power. Going through an Epifani UL112. Love it! Warm tone for days! :)
First off, your fretless has great tone, isn't it a Kona? I have always wanted to play one of those... what kind of rig are you running through?
OK now to be critical just for the sake of being critical. It is one thing to play that on the EB, but give it a shot with an URB, I think you will appreciate the challenge. If you don't play URB (don't see why you wouldn't, as you appear to be a dedicated bassist).
Thanks. Are you thinking of the Kona Walkingbass? That's the only Kona I know of, but it's a pretty different style, more like a compact electric upright. This bass was made by Mike Kinal. Called a "Kinal Kompact" bass. I'm not going through any rig, for recordings like these. I just plug straight into a DI and a nice recording soundcard. I mess around on upright occasionally, so I know full well how much tougher things like this (and pretty much anything) would be. Scott was one of the best!
Yeah. I transcribed that much of the solo myself. It's a pretty tricky one, Scott does a lot of really cool chromatic stuff and flies all around the fingerboard.
good job!

Nice job ! you don't sound like Jaco for several obvious reasons, great instrument it would make a killer fretless ! RIP Scott LaFaro !

Well, I for one thought your timing/feel/tone were great. You capture the essence of what Scott was doing.

He was playing more of what Bill was doing...
platypode 1 year ago
@platypode I beg to differ. In my opinion it was an interplay of equal importance with Scotty's role being in no way subordinate to Bill's.

your bass sounds like straight up jaco tone
your timing felt a little weird at times and i'd suggest take the melody up and octave and giving it a little more feeling

Nice try, although I think you didn't really get the feel on some parts... But overall nice try, it's not a easy one afterall!
And I must say that that acoustic sound fantastically beautiful!!! Are you using flats or do you have a cut in treble?
