@isabelle2436 I agree with you. I think a lot of our heritage is alike and a lot of people don't realize it. I remember going to south America wearing a shirt with geronimos face on it and a lot of people their liked it. I didn't know why but if you do please tell me.
Very nice! Same dance, faces, and clothing as the Indians from Argentina, Cuba, Peru, Chile, Venezuela, Guatemala, Colombia etc. The only difference is that WE are still getting murdered by some Americans and some of the white Hispanics and so one seems to care! So many extremely similar faces and so extremely separeted we now are!

@valenzsantiago also when u fast u become a part of nature nature has healing abilities as well with the right things they can help heal wounds and many other things the thing i like about the apache nation is bc we nvr get into drugs or alcohol nature is the only thing we need
As an adoptee into the Shawnee and Seneca Nations, I think it's very ruthless of the state of Arizona to willingly allow law enforcement to stop an ethnic person on the grounds that they "look" like they "might" be an illegal. Americans, themselves, are illegals to this country. Our Ancestors did not ask them to come here.
I was always told Never record these dances even if they are on display for everyone to see.....How disrespectful this was...I know they tell TOURISTS NOT TO FILM...BUT, AS USUAL THERE IS ALWAYS AN IDIOT IN THE CROWD!!! And to one of the posters below...Crown dancers dance just a little different ...it will never be exact from one apache to the next....Appreciate the sounds and what they stand for~
Dont quote me, but its possible they are the Yellowbird Indian Dancers. They do Crown Dancing, and are excellent performers located in Mesa, Arizona. Theyre San Carlos.
Who are these dancers, really??? They are not the Apache crown dancers I grew up with on the Whiteriver & San Carlos reservations. Apache dancers have a very distinctive style...you can't miss it!
Empty Cloud, what makes you think this is a Latino performance? This is indeed Apache. Are you Nde? Frankly, this should not have been recorded muchless posted. I agree that there is a bunch of BS in Europe that disturbs me too. This performance is definately Nde. I can understand.
Gaan's, crown dancers (white term), mountain spirit dancers can be seen from San Carlos, AZ to White River, AZ and all the way to Mescal, NM. But I have never seen or heard of crown dancers in Yavapai Nation? I would like to see crown dances from the Yavapai Nation on U tube and see what was stolen by the Apache people. The only thing I've seen on the Yavapai Nation is the casino, resort and a small fair with a pow wow? Where's the Yavapai crown dancers? More power to the Apache Gaan dancers.
Just like i told that other guy...a burden basket is a basket with strings and little bell things at the end...those baskets on the fort mcdowell site are water ollas...and if you apache say you have been doing it since 1700's...you guys don't even know what it represents. At least when we do it it actually represents something.
n excuse me IGNORANT but we do kno what the GA'AN represent! so don't go assuming all this BULLS***. They're spirits for us. There mountain gods. With powerful prayers and blessings for the N'DEE......so WE KNOW what they mean for US!!! remember cuz we ain't no dumb PAI like you......
whatever dude. for real. don't even be tryna talk shit. you're a little ass girl. and i said we were doing it CENTURIES BEFORE the 1700's. GET YOUR SHIT RIGHT you fuckin immature little bitch. is that all you're gonna do is talk shit behind a screen? i told you to let me know where i can find you, and you can set up a public meeting, just so i can call your dumbass, and anyone else who believes like you, a fuckin liar to your FACE! for real. grow the fuck up. GO TO MY REZ AND TRY TO ACCUSE US.
We don't even have any pictures of burden baskets on our website...idiot those are just baskets not burden baskets...and the other day we were talkin bout this n the elder i was talking to said..."I hope one of these days one of those Apaches will see a Kakaka...and see what the crown dance really is...when they see it they'll prolly get scared because they don't know what it is or what it represents."
lol just baskets huh? lmao yeah well im goin 2 refer 2 them as "BURDEN BASKETS" because there a copy of how us "WESTERN APACHES" make them. If u don't like it than ya can shove it up ur rear end. Since u obviously r tryna be a tough man behind a computer screen. N u really should try n grow up n act like a MATURE ADULT since ur like 30ish, maybe older. Its sad to c somebody represent there people the way u do. No respect what so ever, so ur da immature person talking bout we were the first!...
how bout we all stop fighting about who did it first.
in this day and age we need to all come together as American Indians to protect each other from argentina to canada. im not apache or anyother tribe mentioned i am a Seneca from the Iroquois confederacy in northen newyork. we must bind together in unity all tribes and fight for our rights again and again
very wise words, I am in Argentina right now and very eager to visit the indian reservations down here, I know their philosophy is just like that of the natives of the north.
so here's some advice: 1. GROW UP n ACT ur age if POSSIBLE! 2. LEARN RESPECT 3. DON'T be a ignorant person. n last but most definately not least. 4. QUIT LIVIN' IN THE PAST!! Cuz thats all this really is too. So don't go gettin all butthurt jus cuz we do it better than you!!!...u 30ish yr old he/she or whatever you may be....
ok i am so going to the yavapai and meeting one of these elders because our elders have had this tradition loong ago spanish recall it going on near the 1600s.... its not just about our history coinsiding with one another but the spanish history has us included, and remember there r different apache tribes everywhere, all carrying the same tradition, even far down in mexico!!!!!
First of all its not spelled pi it is PAI...and who said we were trying to be Apache? The Apaches & Navajos migrated from the north where the other people who speak your language are located.
who said you Pa's are trying to be APACHE? i am! look, you SPORT our tradition camp dresses, the apache is dzán naadleeshe' outfit along with our moccasin and the apache burden baskets. YOU CLAIM THAT THE APACHE'S STOLE THE NA'II'ESS AND GANN WHILE YOUR PEOPLE WERE TAKEN TO SAN CARLOS? THAT IS SO RIDICULOUS. MY TRIBE WAS NEVER TAKEN TO SAN CARLOS, THE NA'II'EES HAS BEEN APART OF MY PEOPLE FROM THE BEGINING.
We do not sport the Apache camp dress the Yavapai dress is way different that the Apache ours has designs and is colorful similar to those of the Mohave, Hualapai, and Havasupai and if you think we wear buckskin as a traditional dress we don't the Yavapai don't even use burden baskets or even claim them to be apart of our culture...And i never said anything about ur tribe being taken to San Carlos...I said the YAVAPAI were taken to san carlos sometime in 1785...
Arent yavapai cousin tribes to the navajo and apache!!! hmmm i swear your not fully certain of your history and the apaches! Oh and by the way go to the WMAT and go 2 the Kinishba ruins and see the little houses of the people u spk of! Apache history is certain we are cousins and our ways may have split far too much its confused us! dont patronize me learn from both cultures of our connected history!!!
Noooo...Yavapais aren't related to Apaches or Navajos! Not even one bit...the cultures may be very similar but we are not related...Yavapais are closely related to the Yuman People which include Yavapai, Havasupai, Hualapai, Mohave, Quechan, and other southwestern tribes.
Yea, the Apache may have had their culture then, but they are not originally from this area. Apaches come from the Athapascan heritage which is from up in Alaska and Canada area. But back in the day the Yavapais used to preform this dance for curing and prayer. Even today Yavapai elders say the Apaches took our dance from us when we were put in San Carlos. We have special symbols that we put on the crowns but Apaches turned it into this. Trust me, if you dont believe me it is in the books!
Untrue. The Mescalero and Lipan Apaches, who never had any cultural interactions with the Yavapais, also observe this rite many generations before the the San Carlos community was established.
We do the Mountain Spirit dance because it represents the "little people" who live on all the Yavapai reservations...Ft McDowell, Camp Verde, and Prescott. They are three ft tall with round heads like crown dancers. People still to this day see them roaming around the rez. For you guys it DOES NOT represent anything...? And I would know that because I am part Apache and I even know that they stole it from the Yavapai...
God created mankind! And the Apache believe that Jesus came to them, and left his footpring at the salt river canyon, and if you put your ear to the foot print you can hear the apaches singing, and there lies salt!
Sorry to all you Apaches but this dance actually belongs to the Yavapais. We have so much proof. They are called Kakaka's and they live in Four Peaks on the Fort McDowell Yavapai Rez. They are three feet tall with round heads only eyes and a mouth. They watch over the Yavapai people. Back in the day when we needed help we held the Mountain Spirit ceremony. But when we were put in San Carlos the Apache began to copy certain features of it.
this is so sacred to the apache, and when provoked it could harm people who disrespect it, you do that in a way that shames us, you who speaking with out knowing! This dates back to the time of coronado, and even then the Apache had their culture!

We as Native American people have been instructed by the dieties to dance for ALL NATIONS, thus for their betterment. Lets not get greedy with out BEAUTIFUL WAYS that the creator has put on earth for us for ALL people.
our people strived for freedom but in their resisdance they were impprisoned. so now i ask you why. why do you betray the great chiefs who fought to keep our culture within itself. and you have the nerve to change direction. Why?
trust me... this is only for exhibition.. no harm done. I'm sure prayer was included. You havent seen the real thing... keep it posted. I need to keep this in my life, anyway I can get it. Gofferspring08
this is NOT a ceremony. i see these guys all over the place exhibitioning apache-style crown dancing. if you're apache, you need to be re-educated...veiraa
Honestly, it's not a real ceremony.. It could be posted up. As long as it's not at a real sunrise dance it's totally fine! I know okay..? Mostly all my grandfathers are medicine men here in San Carlos and Whiteriver.
I am one of the Apache that has been robbed of knowing her heritage first hand. Personally, I am glad to see a small snippet of a ceremony that I MIGHT have been able to see if my family's life had not played out as it did.
Hi, yes today culture and art mostly sells itself as commercial art or in this case commercial culture or commercial cultural expression... I'm a native american from south america, Peru, a Kichwa...
"our songs and culture is just for show now none of these songs have a meaning behind it now-a-days" My opinion is your wrong. There are so many Natives singing, dancing, and praying for so many GOOD reasons. Some Natives do sell-out their culture though. But don't forget the Native Way is True and we need to share our Gifts to the whole Earth.
I agree. It's not good to sell ourselves out, but we can't hide ourselves and our beautiful culture either. Least history repeat itself and our culture is met with adversity again. It's meant to be shared and understood. Like any other culture in this world.
I hang out at a blog where an Apache 'Flute Clan' member(brother?) tries to explain to us what he does at ceremonies, namings, and such. He tells us when he cannot talk about certain parts, but we are transfixed by what he does tell. This country would benefit greatly if we adopted more of the "Native Way".
I'm an from the White Mountain Apache tribe and i'm glad to share my culture. Sad to say that the native american culture is dying. Sharing our culture is important.
I have respect for native american traditions but if you perform in public expect it to be on film, if you want to keep the dance secret don't perform in public.
I have to agree here, if your going to preform a dance like this at a place like National Museum of the American Indian it is going to be filmed by someone.
This dance is being done as "entertainment", NOT a sacred dance. We allow people to tape and take pictures during these type of preformances. There are of course NO camera or videos allowed during actual cerimonies.

This dates back to the time of coronado, and even then the Apache had their culture!

a nation reduced to a tourist spectacle.
never mind, global capitalism is on hand to reduce all of us to this level.
time for the "ghost dance".
and we will rise again "out of the dust" , "the nation" that also means "the people".

Why?

Honestly, it's not a real ceremony.. It could be posted up. As long as it's not at a real sunrise dance it's totally fine! I know okay..? Mostly all my grandfathers are medicine men here in San Carlos and Whiteriver.

I am one of the Apache that has been robbed of knowing her heritage first hand. Personally, I am glad to see a small snippet of a ceremony that I MIGHT have been able to see if my family's life had not played out as it did.

nuvataaqa 4 years ago 3
Hi, yes today culture and art mostly sells itself as commercial art or in this case commercial culture or commercial cultural expression... I'm a native american from south america, Peru, a Kichwa...
Semo321 4 years ago 3
"our songs and culture is just for show now none of these songs have a meaning behind it now-a-days" My opinion is your wrong. There are so many Natives singing, dancing, and praying for so many GOOD reasons. Some Natives do sell-out their culture though. But don't forget the Native Way is True and we need to share our Gifts to the whole Earth.
MattWatchedThisVideo 4 years ago 3

This country would benefit greatly if we adopted more of the "Native Way".
trog69 4 years ago
I'm an from the White Mountain Apache tribe and i'm glad to share my culture. Sad to say that the native american culture is dying. Sharing our culture is important.

hi, I'm a native american from south america, from Peru, a Kichwa. I understand your feeling, and I think it's happening all over our continent...
Semo321 4 years ago 2
I have respect for native american traditions but if you perform in public expect it to be on film, if you want to keep the dance secret don't perform in public.
hakkamantis 4 years ago
I have to agree here, if your going to preform a dance like this at a place like National Museum of the American Indian it is going to be filmed by someone.

We don't dance for entertainment we never did every dance is sacred.
ApacheBIood 4 years ago
This dance is being done as "entertainment", NOT a sacred dance. We allow people to tape and take pictures during these type of preformances. There are of course NO camera or videos allowed during actual cerimonies.
