  • you are such a bad ass i love you!!!!!! ha and heysoqueso dont be so cheap. the heat gun i used dint have temp settings on or owt but still worked and got the themal interface from local computer repair shop for £5 ment to be good stuff but yeah thanks

  • I want a ps3 so maybe I can buy a broken on off of eBay and get it to work

  • Well, i gave it another go and I got my PS3 to work! Amazing. Thanks so much gilksy.

  • Great vid, but unfortunately it didn't fix my ylod. I'm gonna give it one more try. I think i just needed to get my heat gun a little hotter.

  • Looking at this video made me realize sony put a lot of thought into unit maintenance when they designed the insides, like the cooling unit can't be moved after it's in the right spot. Great tutorial.

  • Cheers Gilksy you saved me EIGHTY QUID YOU LAD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Id love to give this a go to see if i can fix mine. unfortunately I dont have a heating gun laying around nor the other stuff besides the screw drivers. So instead of purchasing all that crap to see if i can fix it, will cut my losses and upgrade to newer model. good video though.

  • Thanks very much for taking the time to show us how this is done....I did this to mine last night and now it works like a dream.

  • can't thank you enough man ..... even though my ps3 was somewhat different then yours on the video i manage the get by..... works like a charm ...

thanks for taking the time to put this video up....saved me over $100 bucks ..

    YOU THE MAN!!!!!

works fine again! happy days! top man. many thanks

  • Thanks very much gilksy. I'm experienced in 360's rrod and it was nice to find your well put guide to fix my first PS3. My mate will be well happy.

    take care

  • Is the thermal compound a MUST to fix it?

  • @TSGkids YES

  • @TSGkids Pretty much, I once wrecked a partially broken videocard by not applying new thermal paste when I put the heatsink and fan back on.

  • i think mine is officially dead now. i have done this repair 4 times and this time it isnt working. the board doesn't look warped. anyone have advice other than buying a new one?

  • Good video, very detailed. Although mine looked different on the inside.

Unfortunately, if didn't fix my problem. Off to get a new one. :(

  • @ronjoe1 update....I tried it one more time...worked perfectly! Fired right up, whisper quiet too. Thanks man!

  • i had three extra screws left over is this the 60 gb ps3 or not or does it matter?

b/c i had some things this guy doesnt and vise versa. but this is the only video i could find that actually gives an accurate detailed description to repair it myself. if there is a difference between repairing a 60 gb and other ps3's plz do a video of a 60 gb ylod repair

  • i had three extra screws left over is this the 60 gb ps3 or not or does it matter?

    b

  • This was amazing! thank you so much for the help

  • you have the best demonstration on youtub very indeth in-depth but need hd do another one in HD Thanks it was great

  • holy crap thanks it works. Great job on the video looking forward for new walkthroughs.

  • This video worked great. Just follow the directions and save your PS3. I'm an old guy and much to my teenagers amazment I fixed it. Thanx so much.

  • At first i freaked out when i opened up my Playstation and it didn't look exactly like this. Be sure to check out the 40GB Stripdown video, if you have a 40GB. From there, it was smooth sailing, and after 2 months of relative deprivation, I'm back online. Now i just have to shake off all the Black Ops rust. I got owned today! This technique ABSOLUTELY works. Gilksy saved my Playstation.

  • so after doing the reflow, i no longer get the ylod, but it now flashes a red screen at the main menu, any idea, did i fry the gpu or should i redo the reflow?

  • Amazing! it worked im back playing after a long 5 months of my ps3 being dead. I tried only with the heat sink but it doesn't work. In order for your ps3 to work you have to follow all steps done here. it will work trust me.

  • mine lasted for a month this time. i am going to fix again today and let everyone know how it came out

  • fuck i cant believe this.all these wires like the ones at 4:20 are sealed shut to the ps3 and they cant be pulled out.wtf should i do?

  • Thanks so much for making this video, I worked for me!

  • This Works!! thanks a lot for the tutorial. I almost bought a new PS3 until i saw this video.

  • I had the flashing lights on playstation. I had Formula 1 stuck in there the machine wouldn't turn on. I took out the hard drive gave it a hoover due to the dust inside then i stuck it in a box with my wife's hair dryer lol that didn't work so I turned off the power from behind held my finger on the eject button switched it back on. my machine powered up like nothing ive seen before i ejected my game and now its still on doing a system update. fingers crossed it stays on. standby is no good!!

  • the yelow light of death is back.i fix it one time can i do it again or it is not posible.please send me an answer so i dont do it if i can"t.thanks very much

  • Just tried it and it actually worked. I hope it lasts. Make sure you buy a screw tray($4) when you buy your heat gun ($9). I bought these items at Harbor Freight. Use a different compartment for each step. It makes it much easier when you put it back together. I bought the thermal compound($6) from Radio Shack. There is a metal screw housing that the lid screw goes into. Take that out and put it in the screw tray or it will fall on the floor and go under the couch. Trust me.

  • thats 15 -20 hours a day, sorry. btw i am fixing it again right now. i'll be sure to let you know when it dies again.

  • mine lasted for about 2 months of being turned on for 15 -20 a day. its cool if you just need some time to buy a new one but its not a permanent fix.

  • thanks man for this video.my ps3 its now working but now i have a diferent problem.i can"t conect to internet and my controler its working only on usb cable.do you know what i can do?

  • Comment removed

  • ok i want to try this but im not sure everyone keep on saying how long it last or is it a permanant fix? can someone plz tell me so like that i wont waste my time i will thank you if you answer this.

  • hey dude...what's that white thing that u put on your ps3 at 23:23 . where can I find it??

  • i would pay you 20 dollars to fix mine

  • I turned my ps3 off and the back switch, and a month later (without touching it) i got yellow light of death when i turned it on.... But my black ops game is inside it, any way i can take it out?

  • @VKimK turn your ps3 off at the switch then put your finger on the eject button and switch it back on with your finger still on, there should be a loud fan noise and the disc should come out. i had that same problem and it worked for me.

  • @rhysboy951 I found out, but thank you anyways. :)

  • it worked! for the first 20 secs then it shut off again... FML!

  • IT'S ALIVE!

  • Cheers mate for putting the vids together into one complete vid...also gilsky is a god send, my PS3 is up and running again xD

  • good my ps3 on

  • it worked for me, only after 15 min it came again. what did i do wrong? do i have to heat it up more?

  • Oh yea...by the way...its just a 20gb. I've had it for at least 5 years. Will this even fix it?

  • Thank you for this. It worked like a charm!

  • which is the name of the syringe?

    where can i buy it?

  • bro, watz datt alcohol thing called??

  • holy shit i did this and it worked thanks for the video

  • did this and now my system won't power on at all.

  • @suggett48116 you probably moved the board when it was cooling.

Get a £5 ($10) cheapo faulty board from ebay and do this.

  • @suggett48116 thanks for your response. I actually bent and damaged the ribbon cable to the power eject button. replaced and working again.

  • hey is there anything else other then the paste like somthing at home i can use???

  • About How much does a heat gun, thermal compound and that alcohol thing you said cost?... couldn't really make it out

  • just did this cant beleave that it worked but very happy Got that thermal compound at radio shack all i can say is just follow the video it really works any one can do it

  • my one turns green with the blue light then after some time the yellow light appears it started while playin cod o.0 can't even take the game out :(

  • my one turns green with the blue light then after some time the yellow light appears it started while playin cod o.0

  • tried this and has been on for forty minutes no problem hoping i did it right, many many thanks

  • Will this procedure kick you off psn?

  • Did this, got Red blinker again in about 1 week. Just about to try again on a higher heat, wish me luckl

  • Another thankyou for an excellent guide. Worked a treat on mine, with a full reflow on both sides as well as the heatgun. My gun has 300 and 600 degree settings but it still worked fine at the lower one.

  • CHEERS! It took me 2 tries but I did it! PS3 runs way faster and is very quiet, now. I hope this lasts a while. My advice to anyone else trying this is to make sure the heat gun is at least 350 celsius, clean heat sinks well and use very little thermal paste. I know he says it in the video but these things are important. FU Sony!

  • IF i don't have a hot gun can i use the thing to dry up hairs?

  • @liLBeRGeroN What you mean is a hairdryer I think xD

  • @MrTazz895 yes my brain is slow today...

do you have the same problem as me?

  • I WAN'T TO FIX IT BY SONy'

BUT is it a better idea to buy a new console lika XBOX because its a lot of money for a 4 yearz old fat PS3

  • Thanks a lot for this. Brilliant easy to follow and what's more - It Worked!!! Cheers

  • Too bad it's not in HD, so you can see what's going on...

  • @Silencer2869 if you cant see whats going on bc its not in HD then you have bigger problems to worry about than your ps3 issue.

  • @socomcra5h he has a huge point

  • @socomcra5h HA PWN!

  • @socomcra5h what problems does he have if he can't see everything going on in a video that has less-than-average resolution quality?

  • @socomcra5h

    right on.

  • @Silencer2869 faggot shut the fuck up

  • Bravo Gilksy! I followed your instructions and... it's alive. All it cost was a $30 heat gun and a tube of compound. Oh yeah, I also invested in a usb powered cooling fan. Thanks for putting this out there. You're inspirational. Now I gotta go play...

  • well I followed steps perfectly...and still got the yellow light =( I have old 80GB and its been perfect until 3.61 update and then i started hearing a louder noise...i tried whole process and still didnt work =( anyone have an idea?

  • I been putting off doing this for months... finally had the bottle to do it (Nothing to loose) worked first time! Cheers buddy!

  • yeah mate you are the man, followed your instructions but the only differance was that my heat gun puts out 520c not 350c, little less time and a bit further away and it worked the first time , how long will it last for ???? thanks heaps buddy legendary

  • It worked long enough to turn the system on to get my brand new game out of the drive, then it died again. Thanks for trying to help. Saved me $60 anyway. Off to buy a new PS3!

  • i got the bleep of death and paid £150 for a refurbished one with a 3 month warranty... guess what happened after 5 months... beep beep beep...

  • Dood, you are the bomb man,my ps3 went YLOD about two days after the network went down so it was a double wammy, I heard the news that the network came back up and I went and got a heat gun at Home Depot for $24 today and did this exact process and my ps3 is up and running man, SWEET! Ur da man gilksy!!

  • how long does it last???

  • I just wanted to say thank you very much followed your steps and went and bought the rite equipment to do the repair. Though my ps3 is one of the first type of ps3 it was a bit different once I got inside but used the same premise and got the same result thank so much save me a ton of money i don't have.

  • Thank you, you save my PS3!

  • i found it hard to masturbate to this:(

  • Followed the video and its worked! :)

took me about 3 hours to do with someone but its better than paying £135 to sony to repair it ;)

    Thank you so so much!!!

    :):):):):):):):)

  • Hey GRACIAS for the video!! My PS3 got the YLOD yesterday and looked up this video. I did everything exactly like you did and now my PS3 works!! Good job with the thurough video, everything was well explained and easy to understand! Thanx again!

  • This is awesome - successfully recovered my old 60GB PS3 from YLOD. Strongly recommend this video - works perfectly!

  • I followed your instructions to a tee and my PS3 worked great. I'm going to back up my hard drive and try playing some games to make sure the fix works. Thank you for the great video.

  • Hi everyone! I did what he did and awesome! its works fine. But i have another problem. My ps3 starts properly, ı heard the fan noise but its getting low slowly. After all its gives 3 beep about 1 minute(ı guess its overheating warning) and shut down itself. Any offer ?

  • how long you have to heat the mother board?

  • @zidineck about 15 seconds each, try watching it agian

  • Ive had my Ps3 since launch and this shit happens.....never thought it would happen to me :(

  • Thank you so much, I followed each step carefully and so far so good it seems to have fixed the problem. I'm scared to play anymore than an hour at a time now to prevent over heating, is this something I should worry about? Sometimes I play 3-4 hours at a time.

  • can't believe i got the yellow light =(

  • Sony will fix and give you a 3 month warranty, who cares! You can pay 6 dollars and fix it yourself if you have patience and take the time to do it. When he says thin layer of thermal compound, he means almost opaque. We did it today, and it took about 50 minutes to do it carefully. We turned it on, left it run to see if it would over heat again. Nothing! Worked like a charm. Refurbished units are not reliable and you can pay under 300 for a new unit. This guy is great!

  • Amazing! Went to Best Buy and picked up the thermal paste, borrowed the neighbors heat gun and set the PC in front of my husband and said here...let this incrediblly talented man guide you through how to fix out stupid PS3. He followed the steps to a T! It worked like a charm. We have had our unit since 2005. Thank you so much for posting, and even if this lasts 3 months, it takes less time to repair yourself than paying SONY 140 bucks and taking 11 to 16 weeks. You are awesome!

  • can someone send me his pdf please i really need it

  • is this a permanant fix?

  • I think Sony would do it proffesionally and plus you get a 3 month warranty at least ,and if you try to do it yourself it's pretty much at your own risk. You might be one of those people that does this on your own, and just makes things worse then you won't be able to send it to Sony anymore!

Sony charges $140 shipping included for repair on the Yellow light of Death

    Warranty: 3 months

Repair: If your ps3 can't be fixed they will send you a refurbished PS3 console for the same amount

  • Does this work with an 80GB?

  • @XXXDusthatassXXX The GB Model doesnt matter thats the hard drive You Should Remove it before heating it though

  • OMG LONG AS VIDEO BUT WORTH IT ! I DONT HAVE ANY PROBLEM BUT I JUST

ADDED THIS VIDEO TO FAVORITE INCASE IT HAPPENS ! BTW I SUBBED MAN ......

  • what is the glue thing or compound called?

  • @Mr711trek its called heat compound you can get it from any computer shop mine was £2.50 it comes in like a sryinge.

  • You are awsome! That video was perfect for my ylod problem. I appreciate your help

  • hi i just did this fix and my console came on but after 5 mins went off saying my system was getting hot.is there some thing i may have done wrong or is it because i tried it straight away ?

  • @1981gordon

i have fixed a bunch of ps3's the same way...some stay fixed, others dont.

  • @socomcra5h can I convert this to HD and re-upload it?

    thanks!

  • @1981gordon did u plug fan back in

  • Comment removed

  • @1981gordon Are you sure you plugged the fan it???

  • @1981gordon check the fans and vents if they need cleaning

  • @1981gordon it prob cause you didn't put in enough heat glue thingy or to much of it

  • Dude your English is kind of strange, are u from Alabama?

  • i as a matter of fact just did this and still nothing, step by step thought it was working. got to the update screen it was doin good then decided to charge my controller while waiting and soon as i plugged in my usb it fucked up again and now it wont even show start up screen....... any idea why??

  • Instead of doing those steps.... i would rather buy a new one O_O

  • my ps3 still turns on, but then freezes, im quite sure its overheating because leading up to this, the fan was blowing full speed frequently, could i get away with just replacing the thermal compound (im a little reluctant to use my heat gun because it doesent have percice settings, just one or two)

  • is this just a temporary fix?

  • what sort of wipes can i use any in particular? as for the flux any CPU & heatsink cleaner would do ????

  • A follow up to my post is some advise that I do not think he mentioned. NEVER WORK ON ELECTRONICS ON CARPET. Static will build up and shock your circuitry. Always work on electronics on a towel or piece of wood on a table.

  • I was not sure if this was going to work, but it did! I am glad to have my PS3 back. I had to do things a bit differently because I have a American PS3. I bought a heat gun at lowes for $30 and some paste at best buy for $10. I did not need to keep the gun so I returned it. Total cost and time $10 and 2-3 hours.

  • you sir are a genius. Never had a PS3 apart in my life. Following your clear cut directions we were able to fix the yellow light of death in a few hours.. Thank you

    My sons wallet thanks you...

  • hello i did this it fixed it it stayed on green but wouldnt show no picture or sound :'( i checked all the conections from ps3 to t.v but nothing please try help :'(

  • good instructions but u have to keep the heat gun on their 4 fifteen min. and i got my PS3 workin:P

  • Awsome... yesterday, crashed on level 28 zombies, and I'm all wtf. Found this, and took it apart. After work this morning I went to get the supplies, and 2 hours later I'm running again. First time in four years of owning my ps3. Thank you much for this!

    yiannis

  • Thanks gilksy just fixed my 40gb PS3 YLOD using your tutorial worked perfectly cost 14 dollars compared to 100 plus so thanks alot. Had some screws left over but figure theres less to cool now so probably a good thing. Also what idiot would put the PCB in an oven microwaves are much faster!

    Cheers from OZ

  • Thank you, worked 100% for any sceptics out there. I have a fat 40GB PS3 from when they first came out. Used a heat gun and AS5 like he said for the Flux. Worked a charm.

  • Wtf how did you remove the torx screw wit a flat head. It designed to be only opening with atorx screwdriver.

  • got ps3 big 40gb fixed Thanks :-) owe u a few beers

  • hi gilsky got slim ps3 fix ylod mate

  • Can I use a soldering iron?

  • Can I use a hair dryer?

  • Can I use a hair dryer in stead of a heat gun?

  • At first it only stayed on for a few minutes before YLODing again. But after a restart, it worked for two hours and on. Hopefully it stays fixed. Thanks so much gilksy!

  • is it fix to yellow light ? or there is exist different error YLOD ?

  • so i guess leaving it in my garage in the cold wont help fix it???
