Bowie "with the big pants" lol. Time to do a duet with David Byrne's big suit. Not my favorite version, since the whole thing becomes tragic (not to mention David's hairdo..).
Best is to listen to the song as the heart of Hunky Dory (imo), but thanks anyway.
Actually, the Isolar Tour was in 1976 in support of the Station to Station Album.
And this, the Serious Moonlight tour, happened in 1983. Opened in May of '83 if memory serves me correctly...we all make mistakes though, ce'st la vie.
i was THERE!!!!! in my last year of HS, i stood on line outside MSG for 6 hours ( for orchestra seats) 'cause Bowie hadn't played in the US for almost 10yrs and I had to be there, as close to him as possible, of course! Funny, i saw Tin Machine in an intimate club
yrs later and it felt like miles away but at MSG, i felt closer to the magik that is David Bowie then i did a foot away from the stage. must have been the music, and the whole vibe was different. In my humble opinion, at least.
@wendylambmusic This is a great song, like all of his songs. I saw him 3 times live....no better concert out there. I'm sure your sister is in heaven listening to it. Always think of her when you hear it, thats what our memories are for.....peace and love
No gemma she always went to the cinema alone...until she could no longer see the screen,as her tears flowed into her eyes...then she came alive honey...I love you honey...miss you...have a beautiful life...you will.
I was to two Reality Tour shows.2003/2004. I would say it was better with him singing without a backup. Plus he did a trick or whatever you might call it by singing the exact tune without changing or lowering the high notes. I think I cried a litttle.
It's easy to do. Bowie is amazingly talented, breathtakingly charismatic and divinely sexy. A civilization is remembered primarily for its architecture, literature and music. Bowie will outlive us all.
just dropped in to listen to this beautiful song, could not believe the outrageous comments. Would the song be any different if he was or not gay? It's like we are still in medieval times. Education and respect is the key I am sure...
negative ,negative,negative, listen to the production of this song,how it was created...hes a geious,along side,freddy mercury,michel jackson,and elton john,all fukin gay!!!
Rick Wakeman played the piano and aided in the arrangement of this song on the album. Bowie can play many instruments, but he has always enlisted the help of many a talented musician. He is the artiste', the frontman, whatever persona is required to tell a story. Brilliant performer, and, IMHO, a true genius. Peace:-)
@ZiggyPlay3dGuitar.. Bowie married a beautiful model. Of course he looks fem. thats the idea!! He has played a mime, a space alien, and many other "persons" as an actor. Think whatever helps you feel secure in your own closet "masculine" world. are you aware that originally there were NO women in acting? Only men dressed as women. Even as recently as Vaudeville, men portrayed women in theatre. Educate yourself (if possible) before prooving your ignorance in public.....
Have a bad HSN-QVC SHOPPING EXPERIENCE: Let IMAN go on with kaftans, 30 years after her mafia skank-hubby DAVID BOWIE duped Nixon's W.E.S., to twit ME, for playing guitar so well, Bowie and AC-ZZ duped me and blew off Reagan geeks like Vanilla Ice, when they stole my riffs AND Iran's assets, AND THAT'S THE WAY IT IS, for Ted Poe and any other idiot with his thumb up Reagan's ass.
Why does Iman get into the US, with nukes hot, and her ripoff DAVE riotously tipping off then-revolutionary action?
To be honest, I love this version without high notes. I find them a little bit theatrical (which is ok, they propably are supposed to be this way), and for me this performance seems to be more genuine. In the original or Reality Tour version the question "is there life on mars?" is desperate, here it sounds more rhetorical and pesymistic. I like it! (Although im not sure if this whole comment makes sense :-))
The pants are a 1980's reproduction of the high waisted full leg pants from the 1950's -- the Zoot Suit. The "costumes" Bowie wore for the Serious Moonlight Tour were designed by Peter J.Hall. The whole band looked like an ultra-hip send up of 1950's post-colonial chic.

A DVD of Reality Tour 2004 is coming out. It was unbelievable he sang every high note perfect on this song. I had a lump in my throat. Saw the show in NYC and New Orleans.
Awesome, but at the same time, a little disappointing. The power behind this song is when he hits that high note, and that's been completely vanquished by handing that task over to the backup singer. Sigh. Oh well.

He tells a funny story on 'Story Tellers' about Streisand's boyfriend/hairdresser producing her version of Life on Mars? The dvd of Story Tellers has just been released.
I would LOVE to know what Bowie thinks of Adam Lambert's rendition of his songs. I think they're great and keeps these classics current and new. But I really would like to hear from him what he thinks.
OMFG....Barbra Streisand did a cover of Life on Mars???? This I have to hear....searching right now! I would have to ask.....what was in her mind??? And I haven't even heard it yet!
I thought this was good I guess. I have it on dvd but I really wish there were more videos of him in the 70's than Ziggy Stardust Motion Picture. Don't get me wrong he was always great but the 70's Bowie is really, really, realllyy great.
Bowie is awesome! Now Adam Lambert will be performing a trilogy of Bowie songs during the A.I. tour and bring to light these powerful songs! David will be proud :-)
Forget American Idol pretenders... they always make the songs sound like cheap pop crap. That guy that sang Silly Boy Blue did a terrible job. Bowie deserves more than that. But, for sure, he must love this free publicity!
In my opinion this is the best version of Life on Mars. I think it is far superior to the albums and to any other version I've seen live or on video in the last 26 years. However I get the impression I'm the only one who loves the serious moonlight tour. A pity David Bowie made a shit load of money on it and now denounces his work during this period.

caro umorismo 78 sia la versione originale che questa dell'83'/84' sono eccellenti,,,del resto a cantarle e' lo stesso artista che le ha scritte e david e'sempre grandissimo, come musicista e attore!
Serious Moonlight was my very first concert! I was only 13 - no worries - I went with my mom! I was just as amazed by Bowie then as I am now. This concert was absolutely incredible - he sang (and danced) out with his entire body and soul! Every time he smiled that beautiful smile, it was like I received an electric shock! Thank you so much for being my "first"!

Stardust as a persona, and the respective album are in fact considered some of his best work, especially in respect to most played.
Just because his character's androgynous doesn't mean it's not an awesome Stage persona or awesome album.

Nobody Like Bowie, We are all lucky to be a part of knowing his music. no matter how old or young you are. Simply and devastatingly exquisite.
