DictionaryofEtimology:Instigator, author, protagonist of evil deeds;Mold.tartar.Gr.τάρταρος,partly through,sl.tartarŭ.Tartacot-elf dwarf, evil in fairy tales.it can be a deflection of tartar, as in Tatar
We romanian have a word pretty same for tattur -trântor as slavian trontŭ meaning lazy 1.The male bee. 2. Epithet given to a man who does not want to work and lives on others work.
@IUVENTIU Táttur in the title of this ballad could refer to: A short funny/mocking song/ballad about someone who was as vertyy said 'not good at anything' or someone who did something stupid/foolish. Or it could mean a chapter or part of a larger story. Vísa (ballad) is the word for short songs, Táttur is the word for several parts (you could say episodes) of a Kvæði. In this case it is the latter, as Lokka táttur's companion piece is called Skrímsla
@Rovarin Lol, I found a new word for Tattur and please tell me if it is a connection with it,especially the accent of both : (romanian)TÁRTOR-1) religios, Head of the demons. 2) fig. Despotic leader of a gang. 3) Fig. Unscrupulous individuals who commit reprehensible acts, resorting to terror. / The tartar( in a Dictionary of ...Language)
@IUVENTIU No, táttur is derived from the Old Norse Þáttr. It is a strand (string) in a yarn (rope). Like in English to "string a yarn" could mean to tell a story. But with the Norse word it usually is a metaphor for a short story or a small part of a larger story.
But you have very good imagination, but in this case you are dreaming up too many interpretations.
@IUVENTIU I do not really know how to translate. But a "táttur" is not the same as a "kvæði." The lyrics in the "táttur" is often ironic. For instance Jákup á Møn is about a man who is not good at anything, a total failure. it is written by Nólsoyar Páll and it is full of funny provoking stuff. Probably Jákup á Møn got a women that Nólsoyar Páll wanted .
Oh, are they singing the actual original Loka Tattur song? I thought it was just going to be based around it like their other songs, but this is much cooler! :D
Can't find the lyrics anywhere in proper english. What I can make of it so far, it seems to be a giant beating a farmer at something so they took his son into slavery, and something about the mini maiden harp hand during the chorus. Wish I could actually understand this language, it's pretty cool.
@Ishkaga02 in short this song is about a game of chess between a farmer and a giant, in which if the Farmer wins, the giant will hand over all of his chambers full of cold, but if he loses he'll haft to give up his only son and child. that play the farmer loses. the farmer then pleas the giants for a chance for him to keep his son, the giant agrees to letting him keep his son if, he can with enough skill hide his son from the giant. the giant will give him 3 days in finding a hiding place.
It is now the farmer calls upon the Wisest of gods Odin, who takes the son to the the field and commands the the corn to crown, where upon the boy hides amidst the seeds. the day is over and the giant arrives, and spots the son among the seeds. and the second day he calls for the god Haenir. it is on the third day he calls upon the wittiest of the gods namely Loki who finally is able to hide the son as well as to trick the giant such the son leaps from hiding and kills the giant.
@Ishkaga02 Its based of the of the ancient Faroese ballad Lokka Táttur; Loki's ballad, Týr's version doesn't tell you nearly as much about the storyline as that I've posted (the original contains 95 verses) This Metalized version is limited to just a half a dozen verses for it not to exceed the length of that we take as a normal, (radio-playable) song to have. So yeah this song has some old roots, as "all" things by Týr.
@aGeilini Could you possibly translate the lyrics to English? I've seen the full Lokka Tattur before but I have no idea what parts of it are being sung here in this song.
@vanessadarkangel A swedish one. Maybe nordic. My mother used to sing that to me as a baby. Its about three poor wandering men pretty much. I just look it up. The nursery rhyme got its lyrics from swedish sailor/musician Evert Taube. The melody Is probably older though. Here is a version watch?v=5CgVjI-LiiY.
@LoupduSud Prolly with this ballad, like it or not, one might want to throw out a Hail Loki, since he is the star of it, and the one who rescues the boy...
@mackx1066 You know the best part? The fact that a lot of their tunes are based around traditional tunes from the Faroe Islands. Imagine that, rocking, raping pillaging vikings sailing straight for you. Not a happy sight, oh dear :)
