I've never heard anyone describe the RS4 as flat sounding before. Admittedly I've never driven an M3 before, especially not the CSL, but most people generally agree that the RS4 is a better sounding car both inside and out. The M3 sounds strange at idle too. It's one of the few negative things about the M3.

P.S I'm also an RS4 owner, are you a member on RS246 by any chance?

The SMG comes standard on the M3 CSL. Considering the power deficit, I am more inclined to say the M3 did very well. I would be slightly more suspicious of the ability of the RS4 driver but judging by gear shifts, I think he couldn't have done more.
