@hobo1975 originaly was written in Ddur, but Maestro Schipa sings in Db dur. Check it on the piano. But this does not change my love and respect for him.
@MrSkylark1 Well said. They're so caught up with the sound of their voice, & they dissect the art into what they can comprehend. They would all sing beautifully and effortlessly if they just adjusted how they perceive singing. For it is simply based on the spoken word. Schipa's simplicity with the use of the spoken word and how he truly expressed it was what made him the great magical singer who enchanted audiences who listened. The art though is not gone completely we just need a champion.
I did hear him in the early 60's it was around 1962 in Los Angeles a farewell recital he still sang well was quite old and gave a good performance. His brother invited me to his home. Carlo Schipa told me something interesting over coffee he said if my brother had Gigli's voice with his brain (Tito's) he would be the greatest of them all! I still remember that comment and yes Schipa was a fine artist, perhaps Gigli could sing more roles, he did Spinto roles but Tito did sing with intelligence
I, too, heard Schipa in that recital! In all these years, you, pearlmuth3, are the only person I have ever encountered (in person or on line) who was there. Just to think that he was 74! Do you recall what he sang? Sadly, I lost the program years ago!
Schipa was a very fine singer, light lyric not the extreme high notes of Kraus but as fine a singer, always perfect. He also lasted a long time vocally. Intelligent singer with no bad habits.
I just can't stop listening to this piece by the immortal Schipa....WHAT AN UNBELIEVABLE TALENT....I wish I had been around to hear the great artist live...thank GOD for the recordings....there is absolutely no one today who can even come close to this....
Because of his light voice he was able to handle this neck breaking piece written on the passagio with such ease and grace,,,,probably the best version of this piece ever...I have not heard better andthis includes the Grand Maestro Pavarotti
Never, Never underestimate the power to style. If Schipa's voice was not typical of the breath of 'the tenor,' his style of singing was always true to the heart of the composition. Schipa you can trust with any aria/song.
Schipa was a "tenore di grazia",a near lost tradition, and his "limitations" were a result of his style, made of elegance and "sottilezza".He was not supposed to sing Siegfried or Otello, but no one sung like him L'Elisire d'Amore,Werther, etc Give us more Schipa, there is much to learn from his supreme elegant "fraseato".The comments in the section "about this video" sound defensive,as if Schipa needed protection from comparisons with "great" voices. He was great in his own and insurpassable way.
No, this is to sing with the vocal cords and absolutely perfect "in maschera" like no tenor of today can do it ;-) But, You´re right, also with heart...

No tenor on the operatic stage today can come up to Schipa's level because they
nor their teachers comprehend what the ART of Singing is all about

Nothing that he does not do well. His brother said it all.If he had Gigli's voice he'd have been the best of them all.

I think Di Stefano owns this one. Altough Schipa puts a real gentle side into it.

Pavarotti once refered to his superb voice, though he admitted, it was not a BIG voice, we can agree, it was superb.
