@StickerMedia Hope you got it :D At the back end of the charging handle slot and back end of the bolt area you should see a small notch in the upper end of the guide slot. The spring should be out first but you pull all the way back, then when you feel it cross the notch you pull up and back. It will take some jiggling but eventually you get it so it pops right off. It wil take a few tries to feel out the notch. If you STILL cant get it off, go to the armorer you bought it from.
Awesome, after reading the old 1950's US army manuals, I managed to stumble my way through it, this makes it just so much easier. Everything you need to know. Thanks mate
the op rod on my M1a will NOT pop out no matter how carefully I align the notch or how hard I Push. It is close to brand new and has about 50 rds thru it.
I apologize for that. When I was editing the video I had the option to lower the background music throughout the whole video. It was either this video or another that the music was lowered only through a small portion of it, and not the rest or vice versa (been a while). When I do more future videos the music will be kept at a bare minimum, as in you can barely hear it, if I choose to have music at all for that matter.
Much obliged for the fine video. Waiting on a Socom 16 and will now know how to break it down when it arrives. Any advice on breaking in/lubricating new usgi mags? Heard some using WD-40 and then blowing out with compressed air, but I'm leery of using a penetrating oil around primers... Anyhow, thanks again.
The primers on modern cartridges are sealed very well, the whole purpose of the modern cartridge was to make it much more resistant to the elements. YOu can leave cartridges in a bucket of water for a day and they'll fire just fine.
Point being, WD40 or CLP or any gun oil on the friction points of the mag (all around the follower but not on it) will be enough lubrication for a long long time. Just don't lube rounds, bad idea.
Sounds about right. Thanks again for the great demonstrations. I watched a 45 minute armorer's video the other day on the m1a and came away with a lot less than what yours imparted in much less time. Guess I'm ADHD:)
thats alot of small parts. to the untrained and/ poorly equipped soldier it would be very hard to strip this weapon especially if you need that tool. why cant they make weapons as simple as the ak?
I have one, and field stripping it isn't that different from the mini 14. The gas system seems to be tight on mine, and I haven't noticed any leakage.
Thank you very much my father in law gave me a springfield armory m1a, I field stripped it and couldn't get the damn bolt back in!!! Thankx to this video I didn't have to embarress myself by asking somebody
Yes I have. Some norcs have serious problems with their metallurgy. They are not forged properly and are either too hard and brittle, or too soft and maleable. There are tests to see how hard a metal is, but I'm unfamiliar with them.

Semi auto only with such a tiny mag (5-rounder I assume)... how's it goin, fellow Canadian lol Your better off getting an M1 Garand, those 8-round en bloc clips are legal here in Canada surprisingly enough. Probably the highest capacity high-powered semi auto rifle you can get in Canada lol
I seen a video of an M1 being disassembled and reassembled, and it is REALLY similar to this M14 from what I remember. But the M14 is basically a mag-fed M1 Garand so it's to be expected, isn't it lol
Why is that? In Canada high powered rifles can only use 5 round magazines, unless it's bolt action or a Garand. Hell, semi auto SMGs can only use 5 round mags, too. At least that's what I used on the H&K USC they had at the range.
The "law" states that it is "what the magazine was originally designed for that determines it's capacity". So if the mag was originally designed for a bolt action gun (which there is no legal limit) or a pistol (pistols, all of them, can hold up to 10) and it just so happens to fit a semi auto rifle, then you have a legal 10 round magazine.
The HK USC has it's own propriatery magazine and there is no other magazine that you can use with it, particularily a 10 round pistol magazine etc.
yo whats up dude dont kno if u remember me but you helped me out with my Norinco 1911 a few months ago anyway dont kno if you kno the answer to this but i just got a M1A Springfield will all the parts disassemble just like your norinco?
cause the dude told me not to take it apart if i dont kno what im doing there tricky he said
It's not that bad, the trickiest part is getting the bolt back into the reciever and all you have to do is find the right angle.
He/She may have been referring to complete disassembly, as in taking apart the bolt, in which yes it is VERY tricky to get it back together without a tool.
Other than that, it 'should' be the same as the M1A but maybe others can comment on that. I think that it's probably going to be 99% identical.
so, my firearms permit is due to come around in a couple weeks... and...
THE QUESTION OF THE YEAR IS:
-WOULD YOU ALL YOUTUBERS RATHER BUY A SPRINGFIELD M1A ( 2.969 Euros for the NM version ) or spend 1/3 of that, and buy a shitload of ammo with the remaining money?
i've even heard SA is actually producing their receivers from "investment casting", rather than forgings.. wich is cheaper,
while Norinco still goes by the ol' good forged steel.
If springfield was still using USGI parts I would say it is DEFENITLY worth the money as USGI parts are expensive but they are the best quality. Now a days though, it seems that there are fewer and fewer USGI parts on the M1A, if any at all. If this is the case, I'd just go with a norc.
If your in canada it's pretty hard to find ammo btw.
Brent i'm an Italian citizen, and we've got some access to imported guns - it's just a lenghty process, so it's only done for the most interesting/commercially valid guns.
If it wasn't such a hassle, i'd just save some bucks for a LRB complete upper, and assemble it here..
Yeah. It's nice to know that I dropped $2300 on a rifle that has to have disassembly kept to a minimum. Sounds like a piss poor design to me. If the gun wasn't so f**king accurate, I would have sold it a long time ago.
According to the Springfield M1A manual, disassembly should actually be kept to a minimum, to prevent excess wear. The only regular disassembly needed for cleaning is the gas system. I found that kind of interesting.
The tolerances for this rifle are not very tight, so in reality you really don't have to clean it very often at all. It will still function reliably even after 1000 rounds. Usually when I'm done shooting I sometimes get bored and decide to clean it anyways, in which I disagree that it would wear the parts out for regular wipe downs of the bolt, op rod etc.
Maybe someone else will chime in and explain exactly what the manual means.
It's not that it doesn't need to be cleaned, it's that taking the gun apart and putting it back together can cause wear to the various parts. According to the manual, this is especially true for versions like "the National Match and Super Match rifles, whose actions are glass bedded in their stocks. Unnecessary removal promotes wear, sloppy fit, inaccuracy, and defeats the purpose of the bedding." That's taken right from the manual, which you can download from the Springfield website.
One more reason to buy a Sage EBR or a J Allen Enterprise stock with a aluminium bedding, or so I hear. I'm still a n00b to the M1A. Just bought a SAI SOCOM 16 so I'll try and make a video if I find anything different.
I have a Springfield M1A/M14 standard. The trugger guard is not fully comeing up cause I "THINK" it is grabing a pin in the trigger group how do I go about getting this out ?
I dont know how good the Norinco M14 is, but I do know that Springfield Armory still produces a semi-auto version of the original M14 called the M1A. I'd get one, but I'm just a poor college student at the moment. Maybe in the future...
Unfortunately, it's about $1700 more than I can afford at the moment. I'm thinking of starting off with either a K98k or an 1895 Nagant (revolver), depending on how things go this summer. Both would make a good first gun. I want the K98 more, but I can afford the Nagant right now.
ok, so I am now trying this field strip but I'm having alot of trouble getting the trigger out. I pop the trigger gaur up and reef on it as much as i dare and it doesn't budge.
Huh.. Well it's really only secured by the trigger guard, so make sure the hammer is cocked and the trigger guard is moved up as far as it can go. If it's still stuck, wiggle the assembly back and forth while pulling, try and shake it loose, it should come out.
5 rounds. The magazine is perfect for hunting in this province as your are only allowed 5 rounds. It's also legal cause the Canadian government only allows 5 rounds at a time for semi auto's. 20 rounders are available but the follower is modified so that it still will only take 5 rounds.
Yea, it's what was shipped with the rifle. If you look close it's got lots of dings dents and scratches, but no cracks. Some people claim that their stocks literally fall apart in their hands, while others such as myself have had no problems. It started a saying "norinco mystery wood"
I'm pretty sure the wood they use for their stocks is chu wood. I just bought mine in january but havn't had a chance to shoot it yet. I have heard these rifles have head spacing issues.
Chu wood huh? Never heard of it, I'll have to do some searching to see what it's all about. I too have also heard of headspacing issues, but it's more of a hit/miss issue. You either have them or you don't and not all the rifles do. This is particularily true for .308 ammunition. Mine seems to be fine, I've shot over 200 rounds, but then again maybe I should get a .308 go/no go and see if mine is ok...
I took it out this weekend and shot 20 rounds of remington .308 core lokt soft point. At 100 yards it wasn't too bad but I need a rest to get decent groups. I doubt this rifle will do 1 MOA out of the box, and I suspect that gas unitization, re-crowning, and gas block shimming is necessary to achieve this.
If anyone knows more with thier own M14s leave a comment.
With our Rifle Drill Squad in JROTC we have to learn to disassemble our M14's, but we don't have the wrench. To open the trigger assembly, we simply stick our middle and ring finger in, put pressure on the trigger with one, and yank up, which seems to pull it loose.
Does anyone know if this is dangerous for the rifle? (Not shooting, the barrel and some of the chamber is filled with lead) Just, can it have an effect on how tight the trigger well sits in the stock? Might the well fail eventually?
I just picked up a SA M1A today at a gun show and I noticed my rifle does not have the same kind of pin that holds the recoil spring guide inplace as the rifle in this video...there is no way to push it over with your thumb as the guy in this vid did I tried pushing it out with some tools but I cant get it you ....any ideas ?
Excellent video! Thanks for making it. Santa brought me one of these rifles early and there was no manual. Saved me a lot of time. These Chinese rifles are pretty damn good and now they can't be imported into the USA. Go figure. I guess the Yanks will be stuck paying premium for Springfield M1A'a that haven't been of any quality for about 10 years now. Oh well, they do it to us Canadians with night vision and other gadgets since that ridiculous Homeland Security Act.
lot of guys at my club bought Norico M1A when they first were available, they regretted it after the 3rd time we shot Hi-power no good groups @200 yds maybe 8" was best Springfield is better holds the chamber and rifling more
some. it wont accept the bolt, but most of the opther parts will. You could get it machined to fit the US bolt. The US barrel will interchange, but not vice versa. Also the US flashider will not as the threads are metric.
Thanks very much, i wanted to check out a video before I began reading the manual so I'd have visual ideas on what I'm reading. Thanks again man, nice video.
Damn... Trying to remember here, its been so long since I've fired/stripped the rifle.. At 1$ per round up here its just not worth it!
I believe the hammer should be cocked. If I remember correctly the trigger guard has tabs on it that interfear with the hammer when it is not cocked... I could be wrong on this, so if I am I'll delete the post and re-write it when I check after work tonight..
I checked it and it doesn't matter, ultimatley the bolt must be cocked for the trigger group to come out. However, if the hammer is down and you pull the trigger guard fully to the front it will in turn cock the hammer.
So that's why the hammer has to be down when you put it back in.
And hey, if the hammer was up, then how could the bolt be uncocked? This is circular reasoning, and I actually understand it! It's like a POSITIVE causality loop!
hey brent nice rifle. i just order myself one from marstar and just wanted to know where you get you 7.62x51mm ammo from. im look for bulk/suplus ammo is that what you shoot in your m14.
So, IF you were willing to only go with finger-tightness and maybe use a bayonet or other item to remove the trigger housing assembly, could it be disassembled with the tool?
Yea you can use anything for leverage, as long as it fits in the hole and can pry out the guard. I find that using just my fingers is pretty damn hard, and not worth the trouble. A round could be used as well, screwdriver etc.
im not sure if i sent this msg but ye ill say any way the bet was me iron maiden and he bet children of bodem so u made me 10 bucks i think cant remember whinny girl avoided me and only gave me 5
I can tell you that you should get all friction points, anywhere metal rubs on metal during the operation of the rifle is important to lube. The tracks, bottom and sides of the bolt (lugs) etc. If you want more info I can see if I can find a good guide for you on what should be lubed and what shouldnt. Rounds for example should never be lubed ever for any gun :D
The mini14 is an M14, except smaller. It uses the same trigger mechanism and rotating locking bolt as the M14, but designed to be smaller and for intermediate cartridges not rifle cartridges.
Yea, my bad. The problem was the multiple track thing, so when I tried adjusting it at the end I was only adjusting it for one song and the rest were way to loud.
Lesson learned, future videos won't have this issue
You can own an M14s, its semi auto only, and they were available before 96 when norinco was banned from the states. I know a few guys on THR that have M305's/M14s's from before the ban, perfectly legal.
However, bringing one in thats new, like mine, would be a huge offence, and if you're caught it would probably be on the same grounds as firearm smuggling. Welcome to club fed.
Make sure that the hammer is cocked and the bolt is in battery, safety on or off shouldn't matter. Pull the trigger guard forward like shown in the video and lift straight out. It should come out fairly easy.
Don't call it a weapon ;) Unless you plan to use it to assault someone then its a weapon, but as it is its a firearm :)
Any semi auto with a barrel length of 18.5" or greater is considered a non-restricted firearm, except those prescribed as restricted. ex, ar15. No matter what length the barrel on an AR it is restricted.
So the M14s is non-restricted as it is not prescribed as restricted and has a 22" barrel.
Your the first complaint, no one else seems to have a problem with it. You can clearly here the instructions as well, its not like the music is overpowering the voice.
truly is, I'm glad I purchased it. Would love to own a fulton armory version one day...
I love the M16, I have an AR15 11.5" right now that I bring to the range with me all the time!
If you mean that the americans were supposed to stop communism in vietnam, then yes they lost. But if we're looking at deaths of vietcong versus american, I'd say that the americans defenitly won that war.
Technically, it is. Changes are mainly that it is now magazine fed and uses a short stroke piston and the newer 7.62NATO caliber instead of 30-06.
There are other things I believe, but I'm not to sure, looking at diagrams from the M1 garand its apparent that the op-rod is defenitly different. The piston looks to be attached to the rod on the M1 where as the M14 they are two different components. If anyone wants to chime in about this, feel free
You're correct... the gas system is different (the Garand's gas port is located about an inch back from the muzzle) and the piston on the Garand is brazed to the end of the operating rod, which is longer and had to be bent by hand to make the curve around the barrel. The bolt on the garand also doesn't have the roller. And obviously all the differences related to switching from en-bloc clips to 20-round mags.
The M14 was improved with a roller mostly due to its full-auto capability (which turned out to be pretty worthless as only a couple of guys could handle it full-auto). The garand bolt lug rides in a recess in the op-rod, and is just lubed with the usual grease. It's very reliable and very durable; the op rod tab (the part that fits into the receiver at the rear) wears out first. The Ruger Mini-14 is a sort of hybrid of the 2; a different gas system and a bolt with no roller. Very reliable also.
great video. ty for taking the time 2 make it.TY > !!

What was i doing wrong?

@StickerMedia Hope you got it :D At the back end of the charging handle slot and back end of the bolt area you should see a small notch in the upper end of the guide slot. The spring should be out first but you pull all the way back, then when you feel it cross the notch you pull up and back. It will take some jiggling but eventually you get it so it pops right off. It wil take a few tries to feel out the notch. If you STILL cant get it off, go to the armorer you bought it from.

According to the Springfield M1A manual, disassembly should actually be kept to a minimum, to prevent excess wear. The only regular disassembly needed for cleaning is the gas system. I found that kind of interesting.
AnimeFanatic5602 2 years ago
My chinese manual said it as well.
Maybe someone else will chime in and explain exactly what the manual means.
brentnowell 2 years ago
It's not that it doesn't need to be cleaned, it's that taking the gun apart and putting it back together can cause wear to the various parts. According to the manual, this is especially true for versions like "the National Match and Super Match rifles, whose actions are glass bedded in their stocks. Unnecessary removal promotes wear, sloppy fit, inaccuracy, and defeats the purpose of the bedding." That's taken right from the manual, which you can download from the Springfield website.
AnimeFanatic5602 2 years ago
One more reason to buy a Sage EBR or a J Allen Enterprise stock with a aluminium bedding, or so I hear. I'm still a n00b to the M1A. Just bought a SAI SOCOM 16 so I'll try and make a video if I find anything different.
But rock on on the strip down video.

AnimeFanatic5602 2 years ago
I wouldn't mind a Mauser myself, they are great guns with a rich history.

ok, so I am now trying this field strip but I'm having alot of trouble getting the trigger out. I pop the trigger gaur up and reef on it as much as i dare and it doesn't budge.
go2dick 2 years ago
Huh.. Well it's really only secured by the trigger guard, so make sure the hammer is cocked and the trigger guard is moved up as far as it can go. If it's still stuck, wiggle the assembly back and forth while pulling, try and shake it loose, it should come out.

why is the mag so tiny ? how many rounds is that ?
machete97 2 years ago
5 rounds. The magazine is perfect for hunting in this province as your are only allowed 5 rounds. It's also legal cause the Canadian government only allows 5 rounds at a time for semi auto's. 20 rounders are available but the follower is modified so that it still will only take 5 rounds.

Nice looking stock. Is that the original?
steelhorses2004 2 years ago
Yea, it's what was shipped with the rifle. If you look close it's got lots of dings dents and scratches, but no cracks. Some people claim that their stocks literally fall apart in their hands, while others such as myself have had no problems. It started a saying "norinco mystery wood"
brentnowell 2 years ago
I'm pretty sure the wood they use for their stocks is chu wood. I just bought mine in january but havn't had a chance to shoot it yet. I have heard these rifles have head spacing issues.
go2dick 2 years ago
Chu wood huh? Never heard of it, I'll have to do some searching to see what it's all about. I too have also heard of headspacing issues, but it's more of a hit/miss issue. You either have them or you don't and not all the rifles do. This is particularily true for .308 ammunition. Mine seems to be fine, I've shot over 200 rounds, but then again maybe I should get a .308 go/no go and see if mine is ok...

Nice backgroundmusic, These colours dont run by iron maiden, right?
The rifle also looks good. How does it shoot?
Mustang1204 3 years ago

IntroSpectre6x3 3 years ago
the wrench is just to make it easier for those with weak hands

Oh well, they do it to us Canadians with night vision and other gadgets since that ridiculous Homeland Security Act.

the american made m14 is 4x the price as the chineese counterpart and both are nearly identical!
madpelletgunner 3 years ago
For how cheap the Norinco is, it's an amazing rifle. Oddly enough, it's very accurate and a pretty good rifle.
elasticbandman 3 years ago
lot of guys at my club bought Norico M1A when they first were available, they regretted it after the 3rd time we shot Hi-power no good groups @200 yds maybe 8" was best Springfield is better holds the chamber and rifling more

I guess ive been lucky then. Ive had mine for about a year now and it still shoots fine. I got two deer with it this season too.

does the Norinco M14 accept USGI parts?
bong9130 3 years ago
some. it wont accept the bolt, but most of the opther parts will. You could get it machined to fit the US bolt. The US barrel will interchange, but not vice versa. Also the US flashider will not as the threads are metric.

Crap, this is the most important thing I needed to ask; does the hammer need to be up (fired), or down (unfired) before I take the group out?
T850CSM101a1676 3 years ago
Damn... Trying to remember here, its been so long since I've fired/stripped the rifle.. At 1$ per round up here its just not worth it!
I believe the hammer should be cocked. If I remember correctly the trigger guard has tabs on it that interfear with the hammer when it is not cocked... I could be wrong on this, so if I am I'll delete the post and re-write it when I check after work tonight..
brentnowell 3 years ago
Thanks.
T850CSM101a1676 3 years ago
I checked it and it doesn't matter, ultimatley the bolt must be cocked for the trigger group to come out. However, if the hammer is down and you pull the trigger guard fully to the front it will in turn cock the hammer.
brentnowell 3 years ago
So that's why the hammer has to be down when you put it back in.
And hey, if the hammer was up, then how could the bolt be uncocked? This is circular reasoning, and I actually understand it! It's like a POSITIVE causality loop!
Gunzen ftw!

hey brent nice rifle. i just order myself one from marstar and just wanted to know where you get you 7.62x51mm ammo from. im look for bulk/suplus ammo is that what you shoot in your m14.
deadlydelta 3 years ago
So, IF you were willing to only go with finger-tightness and maybe use a bayonet or other item to remove the trigger housing assembly, could it be disassembled with the tool?
JustOneGunner 3 years ago
Yea you can use anything for leverage, as long as it fits in the hole and can pry out the guard. I find that using just my fingers is pretty damn hard, and not worth the trouble. A round could be used as well, screwdriver etc.

can you show how to oil the rifle?
rickbar123 3 years ago
I can tell you that you should get all friction points, anywhere metal rubs on metal during the operation of the rifle is important to lube. The tracks, bottom and sides of the bolt (lugs) etc. If you want more info I can see if I can find a good guide for you on what should be lubed and what shouldnt. Rounds for example should never be lubed ever for any gun :D

thank you brentnowell. the rifle was passed on to me and i have little info on how to care for if.

friscol415 3 years ago
The mini14 is an M14, except smaller. It uses the same trigger mechanism and rotating locking bolt as the M14, but designed to be smaller and for intermediate cartridges not rifle cartridges.
brentnowell 3 years ago
Great vid man, just turn down the music a bit, cannot hear half you say :)

'cept those are banned in the states.
If we're caught with one, oooh boy!
T850CSM101a1676 3 years ago
There's other kinds though.
Good vid.
T850CSM101a1676 3 years ago
Thanks.

It should come out fairly easy.

hey nice video. i have been looking at getting an m14 for a while now. just wanted to know if it is either a restricted or a non-restricted weapon.
IonPrime 3 years ago
Don't call it a weapon ;) Unless you plan to use it to assault someone then its a weapon, but as it is its a firearm :)
Any semi auto with a barrel length of 18.5" or greater is considered a non-restricted firearm, except those prescribed as restricted. ex, ar15. No matter what length the barrel on an AR it is restricted.
So the M14s is non-restricted as it is not prescribed as restricted and has a 22" barrel.

Nice post! I have a Polytech M14S...I'm told they were better quality than the Norinco's? Have you heard this???
rugersix 3 years ago
There's some info about polytech on the net that I was skimming, but I am unsure of how well they are built...
I know that the older norinco's had a much better finish than the present day ones, so you could be right.

At least you're still allowed to own an M1A in Canada. Here in NYC they are strictly verboten.

truly is, I'm glad I purchased it. Would love to own a fulton armory version one day...
I love the M16, I have an AR15 11.5" right now that I bring to the range with me all the time!
If you mean that the americans were supposed to stop communism in vietnam, then yes they lost. But if we're looking at deaths of vietcong versus american, I'd say that the americans defenitly won that war.

look like m1 garande
dultra 4 years ago
Technically, it is. Changes are mainly that it is now magazine fed and uses a short stroke piston and the newer 7.62NATO caliber instead of 30-06.
There are other things I believe, but I'm not to sure, looking at diagrams from the M1 garand its apparent that the op-rod is defenitly different. The piston looks to be attached to the rod on the M1 where as the M14 they are two different components. If anyone wants to chime in about this, feel free
brentnowell 4 years ago
You're correct... the gas system is different (the Garand's gas port is located about an inch back from the muzzle) and the piston on the Garand is brazed to the end of the operating rod, which is longer and had to be bent by hand to make the curve around the barrel. The bolt on the garand also doesn't have the roller. And obviously all the differences related to switching from en-bloc clips to 20-round mags.
1kperday 3 years ago
Without the bearing (roller) for the bolt how does the garand compare with wear?
Does it ever hang up more without the bearing?
Personally I think that if you were to remove the bearing it would lead to quite a bit of unreliability.
Just curious
brentnowell 3 years ago
The M14 was improved with a roller mostly due to its full-auto capability (which turned out to be pretty worthless as only a couple of guys could handle it full-auto). The garand bolt lug rides in a recess in the op-rod, and is just lubed with the usual grease. It's very reliable and very durable; the op rod tab (the part that fits into the receiver at the rear) wears out first. The Ruger Mini-14 is a sort of hybrid of the 2; a different gas system and a bolt with no roller. Very reliable also.
