  • how come there's no consistency in the monsters size, sometimes it's just a small cloud, and here it's a fucking tornado

  • @MattthePolishActor because its a smoke monster, it does as it bloody well pleases

  • Sawyer's classic line "Open the damn door!!!'

  • he turned off the electro magnetic sonic fence ? right ?

  • What song starts playing at 3:38?

  • @shurtugal81 It's a part of "Dharmacide"

  • I really wish they had kept the sound effects from the smoke monster/guns/shouting at the same the sad music played and Ben said goodbye to his daughter. IMO, it would have been more dramatic/exciting.

  • I LOVE 1:46, "Excuse me, James."

  • As great as this scene is, unfortunately it no longer makes any sense. Now that we know what we know, why would Ben have a room where he could call Smokey? Why did this room exist? Who told him about it? Richard and Dogen both knew Smokey was bad, why didn't they ever bother telling Ben?

  • @MyMojosSoDope It is repeatedly brought up that the smoke monster had been manipulating Ben, this is mentioned all the way up until the penultimate episode. And Ben didn't associate with Dogen - as it is shown in season 5 that the others became divided over whether or not to move into the barracks, and Ben did not become leader until well into the barrack-occupation.

It is a well-established fact in LOST that Ben was always kept out of the loop.

  • @Damon242 Ben knew who Dogen was and he had plenty of interaction with Richard, it seems very odd that neither of them would never at least mention anything about the smoke monster. Ben may have not been able to talk with Jacob, but he wasn't totally out of the loop, he was the leader. Also in the penultimate episode Ben says "This is where they told me I could summon the monster". Who is "they" and who built the room? I feel that another Ben flashback episode would have cleared alot of this up.

  • @MyMojosSoDope You got the dialogue wrong. What he says is "It's where I was told I could summon the monster. That's before I realized that it was the one summoning me" - that pretty much suggests that MIB, who had been manipulating Ben since he was a kid (his dead mother), had told him about it while in some other form.

  • @MyMojosSoDope It was built by the Egyptians - it had hieroglyphics on it, and depictions that match that of the sublevels of the Temple.

Also, in the season 5 episode 'Follow The Leader', Richard and Elloise lead Jack and Sayid through a series of tunnels (also matching the sublevels of the Temple). It is revealed that these tunnels run right under the Dharma Barracks. Richard even goes so far as to smash through one of the tunnel walls to get into the basement of one of the Dharma houses.

  • @Damon242 Oh and you were right about me getting that quote wrong. I still wonder just how the monster was manipulating Ben. I don't remember it ever being confirmed that his mother's ghost was actually the monster. I really would have loved a flashback episode just letting us see what kind of relationship Ben and the Monster had.

  • @MyMojosSoDope It was all but confirmed that Ben's mother was the monster. Considering everything with Ben being shut out of everything Jacob-related, his dead mother showing up outside of the fence and seemingly-luring him out into the jungle (plus coaxing him to shut down the fence, when you technically think about it), the whole cabin-affair and Ilana's line in 'The Incident' about someone else having been occupying it, the reveal of MIB being Christian and everyone else who was dead...

  • @MyMojosSoDope ...A lot of stuff that Ben discusses in the last few seasons suggest that the monster had singled Ben out and fed him false information about Jacob, the cabin, the summoning chamber, the purpose of the monster, etc. Perhaps just for the purpose of killing Jacob (we know from the events in season six that MIB is a veeeeeeeery patient person).

  • @MyMojosSoDope Finally, Richard didn't reveal anything to anyone (this is shown throughout the series), and only ever did so under Jacob's instructions. He was also completely unaware of Ben's relationship with the monster. And as I previously mentioned, Ben was kept out of the loop by Richard.

Now regarding Dogen, we see throughout the first few episodes of season 6 that Dogen never spoke to anyone unless through his "translator" or if they were summoned by him.

  • @MyMojosSoDope Considering that in 'Meet Kevin Johnston' it is suggested that not all of the others are even aware of the temple, that Ben visited the temple as a child but had his memory wiped - subsequently stayed in the Dharma Initiative until he killed his father...

  • @MyMojosSoDope ...only occasionally joining the others while under the leadership of Widmore and Elloise (in 'Dead is Dead'), then remaining in the Dharma Barracks until the main events of the series, it is likely that Ben had little to no interaction with Dogen.

So all that considered, while not impossible, it is highly unlikely that Ben ever spoke directly with Dogen or that he would have learned anything of importance from him.

  • @Damon242 We know the rest of the others at least knew of the monster's existence which leads me to wonder just what the general belief about him was. Juliet knew he didn't like the fences, the other who was protecting Kate in early season 6 knew he was bad, and when Locke(MIB) tells the others that the smoke killed the people in the temple, they seemed perfectly satisfied with that answer and ask nothing else. Finally I wonder why the Egyptians built that room and just what views were on it.

  • @MyMojosSoDope Well, Widmore didn't know - and he was leader before Ben. He states in 'The Package' that all he knows about the monster is "a combination of myth, ghost stories, and jungle noises in the night". Based on that, it seems likely that the question always went unanswered - or at least the ruse was played by Richard that he knew nothing.

  • @MyMojosSoDope There's evidence that Juliet knew about the fences because the Dharma Initiative did, and therefore Ben and those who moved into the barracks. The orientation video in 'The Man Behind The Curtain' states that the fences were built to keep out the island's "more abundant wildlife".

It seems likely at the beginning of season 6 that everyone who traveled to the Temple learned something of the monster (the all immediately knew what to do if Jacob was killed).

  • @MyMojosSoDope Except for his visit in 'Whatever happened, happened' (which he conveniently forgot about anyway), Ben didn't appear to have ever gone to the temple again. Maybe that has to do with Dogen gaining complete authority at the temple, or perhaps only Richard was allowed to take everyone there (evidenced by the same episode as listed above, and the events of season 3 and 4).

  • @MyMojosSoDope I was obsessed with Egyptian mythology for a long time while I was in college. All signs within the show point to the Egyptians having treated the monster like the creature Ammit (specifically that depiction in the sublevels of the temple in 'Dead is Dead').

Jacob's story in 'Ab Aeterno' suggests that the monster manipulated everyone who ever came to the island, posing as all sorts of things -and the Ancient Egyptians were very religious, he would have used that to his advantage.

  • @MyMojosSoDope Finally, let us not forget that Dogen was aware of the candidates and yet Richard wasn't ('LA X', 'The Substitute'), so the fact that he hadn't even revealed that information to Richard only reduces the likelihood that would have revealed anything to Ben.

  • @Damon242 Ben stated that Richard's other job was to be an advisor to the leader. I guess I just have a hard time buying that Ben would have never brought up the monster with Richard, and that he would have at least warned him against it and left it at that. Ben also seemed to see the monster as some kind of judge (Dead is Dead) and told Locke(MIB) that "We don't even have a name for it" as though the rest of the others shared his views on the monster.

  • @MyMojosSoDope It's hard to judge how much Ben knew about the monster. Clearly, Richard knew something of it - and it might be suggested that he didn't mention anything about it given what Jacob said about not telling them everything and allowing them to figure it out on their own ('them' being everyone he brought to the island).

I always think back to 'The Man Behind The Curtain' and Richard's reaction to finding out that Ben had seen his dead-mother on the island.

  • "I have to say goodbye to my daughter, John" is heartbreaking. Michael Emerson is brilliant.

  • why is the smoke monster so big here lol..

  • if only people could actually do that

  • Benjamin is so polite, "Excuse me, James" :)

  • That thing is awesome too bad All of it is Fiction.

  • @tbr281 ...of course it's fiction.

  • Awwwwwwww Yee

  • Man In Black for the win.

  • Fuck.. I cried at the ending .. so sad

  • Hard to believe that that giant smoke monster only injured like one of them...

  • @Desmondbrotha108 obviously it can only be injured when mortal in human form I wish theyd only severly injured it not killed it and left it open for it to and lost to come back in the future

  • @AnimalsTwilight Ben wasn't ready to go into heaven, brotha. And Alex died innocently, so she went straight to heaven

  • 2:13 This was really one of the true "oh, shit!" moments of the show when we realize just what Ben did. And then 3:11 :)

  • this was the first time i actually appreciated that things existence

  • this was the last good smokey scene...

  • @Crazyeraser1 what about the temple?

  • supercoolkid, you have a very excellent point. no wonder he was made at jacob. i was thinking during his scene under the statue "we don't care that you were left alone blah blah blah". but now, i think he had good reason to love the man in black and hate jacob!

  • I feel so bad for Ben :(

  • The rape train of apocolypse is probably the best name for a monster you could ever hear.

  • I think when Ben said " He changed the rules" that he was possibly referring to Jacob and his "rules"....i.e. a candidate can only be killed by another candidate. Alex may have been a candidate since "Rousseau" was written in the lighthouse, therefore Ben was counting on the fact that Keamy couldn't kill Alex. This may also explain Ben's subsequent anger towards Jacob.

  • @SuperCoolKid321 Ben didn't know about the candidates.

@Supermassively MiB didn't summon Ben, Ben (and probably others aswell) summoned MiB but he only turned up when he chose to (Ben didn't mean it literally).

  • @MATTMEZZA666 We don't know for that certain, I think Ben knew a lot more about the island and "the rules" than we thought. Even though he didn't meet Jacob til the end of the fifth season, I'm sure Richard would have filled Ben in on some important things (The Others were a medium between Jacob and the Losties after all).

  • @SuperCoolKid321 Richard probably filled Ben in on some things (like the 'Smokey Summoner') but Richard didn't seem to have knowledge about the candidates, so he couldn't have told Ben about them.

  • Excuse me, James

    "Excuse you"!?

  • so ben is getting the MIB?

  • @ThePunktkommastrich No, the Man In Black summoned Ben. He just made Ben think that he was summoning the black smoke.

  • @Supermassively how is that possible. im weak minded explain that a tad more please

  • @UPOD189 The Man in Black didn't need to be summoned. He knew where he had to be and what he had to do. It was all part of his plan, driving Ben to the Dharma cabin so that he could witness Alex's death and be driven by his grief to murder Jacob.

  • @Supermassively fuck you

  • how did he summon the monster has it been revealed yet?

  • @BENGIFAGOL No, not yet.

  • @BENGIFAGOL Yes it has but it isn't explained how smokey knows when it is being summoned.

  • @BENGIFAGOL In the epsidoe Dead is Dead

  • Ben was the greatest character in LOST, untill 5 season.

  • when ben cals the black smoke-this needs to be explained.

  • 2:51 - 2:55 Best noise in the world. IMO

  • this scene was heartbreaking. ben is my favorite character, he's so interesting, and really, i don't care that alex died, i only care that ben's sad.

  • In the jungle/

    The creepy jungle/

    Homer rides a freak/

    hahaha

  • Is it just me or did this attack seem a bit rubbish, I mean yeah it bought ben and co some time to escape but all it did was fatally injure one mercenary

  • miles' face at 3:18 is so funny!

  • This was an epic scene of LOST. Alex was my favorite character and keamy had to be an asshole. Smoke Monster FTW

  • I have been thinking about this scene a lot and wonder why Ben is able to summon the smoke monster and think now it was a clever ploy by smokey. By helping Ben deal with the guys, he is able to use Ben for a favour of his own....namely killing Jacob 2 seasons later.

  • the look on Miles' face is priceless

  • it ripped the dude's balls off...what is he suppose to be thinking?

  • You could isolate the monsters noise for me and play it for 20 minutes. Its uplifting to hear buildings shake and people scream.

  • I was just thinking about that today i hope smokey kills alot more people

  • "I'm a bit wobbily but i'll live"

"Well I wouldn't be too sure about that"

    lol

  • Yeah this is badass as hell. Summoning Smokey is fucking awesome.

  • *heart breaks* this was so sad! ben can be manipulative some times but he did love his daughter!!! damn you keamy!!!

  • peace bad guys

  • I just wonder how he closes the door from the outside?

  • whatever you do,

don't piss off the smoke monster.

    ha

  • This is my favorite scene so far!

  • c-ya alex

  • Aww it didn't do it's "Awesome Roar" (sounds a bit like HWOOOOOOOOOO)

  • At-least it did its "Awesome Chitter" (sounds a bit like CHICKITYCHICKCHICKITYCHICK).

  • 2nd best scene from Lost ever. Of all the scenes, this one had my jaw dropping like no other when Smokey shows up.

  • i really do hope that Ben turns out to be a good guy in the END :)

Hes a Brilliant acter and character

  • Nope, he just turned out to be a follower.

  • does anyone think claire might have died when the house exploded? im probably wrong...

  • claire is there later than she disappears in the jungle. but she's coming back next year

  • oh my god, i love michael emerson. poor ben. he really loved alex, but was stupid in thinking that he could save her by negotiating. i think he just kind of panicked... really sad scene...

  • He is a fantastic actor. You can really feel the emotion that he is feeling.

  • Absolutely incredible scene. Thanks for the upload

  • whats the song that plays when ben says his goodbyes to alex? and is it on the season 4 soundtrack?

  • Its Ben's theme. Its called "Dharmacide".

  • Locke: What did you do?

Isn't it obvious? He summoned the rape train of the Apocalypse.

  • @Beastialman HAHAHAHAHHAHA. YOU ARE A LEGEND. THAT'S SUCH A BETTER NAME THAN SMOKE MONSTER.

  • Considering Miles can speak with the dead, the look on his face and the reason he is running first should be extra noted!

  • He can't speak with the dead, just can find out what has happened, but nothing there after, not like hurley :P

  • No way, hurly is seeing jacob, Miles has something completely different, remember when they gave us the back story on him. What he does has nothen to do with the island, unlike hurly.

  • hurly didnt see jacob if ur referring to the cabin

  • I think that Miles has powers because he was born on the island, probably.

  • yes she still was

he still raised her after he stole her

    he still loved her

and he saved her and danielle from getting killed

    so she was his daughter

if you say that then anyone who adopted someone is not their daughter still?

even if they still raised them?

  • Oh, I totally agree. Good point.

  • nope, still not the biological father

  • What does genes (something physical) have to do with the relationship (social, personal and intimate phenomenonl)?

  • Comment removed

  • What do you mean by "acted like her father"? What do you mean by "father"? The definition can't be settled by presupposing it is right in the premise.

"Father" is a socially constructed term (ie. biological, adopted) and how we perceive the role or the nature of a "father" depends on the personal, social and cultural meanings we attach to it!

    How can we

  • How the hell Emerson lost out on an emmy for this scene is beyond my comprehension, so well acted.

Plus it was so badass, realsiing that not only does Ben know what the Smoke monster is, he can even control it to an extent.

  • the monster is letting ben control him

  • you that door really is a door to my house!

  • uuhmmm... maybe "he changed the rules" means that at some point they both agreed that in their war (between Charles Widmore and Benjamin Linus) it was forbidden to harm or kill members of their family. Ben knows a lot about Charles, he knows he has a daughter but never attacks her to harm Charles, but when he is out of the island and visits Charles he promises to kill Penelope. It may have nothing to do with Time traveling rules.

  • when ben first stole alex ....charles told him to kill her cuz the island wants to...... but in ben's point its not what the island wanted but what HE(charles) wanted

also shes a part of the others so maybe they have rules not to kill each other 0.0...... i think

  • I think Ben dies in the next ep. But i'm not sure. It just looks like it lol.

  • ben linus is the greatest character in the history of lost

  • @cocaineuk87 correction: the greatest character in tv history

  • Poor Ben. The one thing he cared about....gone.

  • In the next episode Ben goes to the temple so the smoke monster can 'judge him', because apaprently he broke the rules.

I reckon that when he said he broke the rules he was referring to when he summoned the smoke monster in this scene.

  • I don't get it, Ben summoned the Smoke Monster to kill the mercenaries... why didn't he just do this in the first place when they first arrived and prevent his daughter from ever dying?

  • "They changed the rules"

Must have something to do with the timetravel rules. Which would mean that ben knows what's gonna happen in the future, maybe because he's been there, and maybe alex was alive then, and he's chocked that they actually could kill her.

And I always wondered how Ben could be the father to alex, he must have met Rosseau in the past for that to happen, cause she was pregnant with bens child when she came to the island.

Ben must've done alot of time travel

  • Some good news is that we are going to have more from Smokey soon. :)

  • If they are in a time loop than Alex didnt die in a previous one because Ben said "He changed the rules" most likely speaking about Whidmore or to a smaller extent Keamy changed the rules by shooting her. So either Faraday was wrong when he said Whate ver happened happened and you cant change it or a screw up by the writers

  • i almost feel bad for ben here, but then again he did just let alex die so idk....it was rlly sad when she died!

  • Musta thought Keamy was bullshitting..Oops...

  • I would have gone Tony Montana on them. I loved that Ben killed Penny hope he gets Widmore.

  • "I loved that Ben killed Penny"

What kind of sick bastard are you???

What did Penny do to you?

  • One of my favourite lost moments. I think behind the door in bens house there is a path to the Temple where Ben talked to Jacob/The Island about the threat of the mercenaries and Jacob set the smoke monster on them to protect it. The change from day to night in this scene would be explained by the long walk to the Temple.

  • Locke said that it would be dark in "twenty minutes," so, I doubt that he went to the Temple, which is a lot more than twenty minutes from the barracks.

  • Actually its not far from The Barracks, but if you try to get there on foot throught he jungle its over a days walk due to the fact that its surrounded by a mountain range.

However Ben seems to have a tunnel leading directly there so its entirely possible that he could get there and back in 20 minutes. One of the reasons Ben calls the temple the safest place on th eisland is because its so difficult to get there on foot.

  • That isn't what I was referring to: the previous poster said that the change from day to night indicated a long period of time --- which, from what Locke said, would only have been twenty minutes. So, when it is dark, it is at least twenty minutes later. I agree that his "trip" lasted around twenty minutes.

  • so ben actualy loved alex ?

  • Sure looks like it.... Man, if i were those other guys(in the house even), i'd be terrified.... she was his last tie to anything, and with her gone, there's nothing to keep him from doing the unthinkable O.O

  • this is one of the scenes where Ben actually seems human.

  • Yea good job, you sure fucked it.

  • shit there was 108 comments before i post this :O

  • Oh yeah! ULTIMATE REVENGE!!!! I would've done the exact same thing, holy crap!! :D

  • Ben's monster is the best

  • he changed the rules u can't do that

  • WHAT DID YOU DO!?

ben's like "forget you, I don't feel like anserwing you" xD

  • Comment removed

  • You don´t change the fucking rules.

  • Damn straight!

  • Based on other various posts I have read,

I think the smoke could be a cloud of nanonites that one, or more of the various groups on the island developed.

Or , it could be a long lost Egyptian curse, spell, or a result of an incantation by Ben.

    Either way,

    'fall back'

    ha

  • the creators said, that it's not a nanotechnology, so it's gotta be something else.

  • lol he actualy cald the smoke o_0

  • What did you do???

Did you just call that thing???

Got a 40' cloud of pissed off smoke comin at ya.

    Bummer.

  • This gives me chills.

  • great way to open up the second half of the series.

    series 5 can't wait

  • i actually really like it i just dislike it when it fixxates around jack when its not about him its brilliant i mean look...this is a brilliant scene that doesnt include jack

btw like how the monster comes in like a train

  • gotta love Miles facial expression,

    it an 'OH SH*T' moment...

  • Mercenary,

    sorry i spelled it wrong.

  • I wish they had kept Alex, she could have been an interesting character, expanded the plot, background with Ben and so on.

Perhaps, there are too many plot lines already.

This show has not reached 'TWIN PEAKS' level of confusion yet. 'Tho I loved that freaky show to death'

As long as you've seen all of them, its not too hard to follow.

Can not wait for the new season.

    p.s. Evangeline Lilly is hot...

  • Long live the SMOKE MONSTER!

    It kicks mercinary ass,

    hahah...

  • Oh my god, poor Ben. I can't imagine what that would feel like.

  • i don't really get about the rule...

    what rule is that ..??

  • we dont know yet.

  • in the series i had said that the black smoke is a security thing. obviously the people who dont belong to the island gets raped

  • "raped" WTF?

  • 1:38

"Yeah, a bit wobbly, but I'll live,"

"well I wouldn't be too sure about that..."

    so claire is dead... tantan!

  • You forget something. they are surrounded by Keamy's soldiers...

  • yeah, but that guy has some supernatural powers, remember?

  • Ohh. And that clanking I was talking about when the monster grabs, it seems to make a high pitch clanking at the second 3:14 when it grabs, or when its arms ready to come out. go to the second 3:14 to see what I mean.

  • The Monster when it enters appears to have lightning flashing in it.

  • Methinks the monster has thus far been indicated to be far more primordial than the Dharma Initiative. Just look at its source in this scene - Ben's anger - and the fact that he 'calls' it, he does not control it. Also, the door that lead into wherever it was Ben went to call the monster looked ancient and was adorned with ancient tribal markings and stuff. It all points to the monster being an ancient part of the island that DHARMA might have tried to play with, but never could control.

  • It is good to see good old Smokey. I think that DHARMA might have known about the monster, but that they kept it secret to use as a possible fail-safe if the Hostiles ever started taking control of the Barracks. Looks like we will have to wait and see when Season 5 starts.

With Ben saying goodbye to Alex is the most emotional moment with Ben showing his human side. Micheal Emerson is the best actor for any TV series. This is what a #1 moment in TV should be.

  • It seems that the monster makes a clanking noise everytime it grabs something, see what I mean by clicking this second: 3:14 by clicking, this will draw you to the exact second on the video.

  • Nothing humanized Ben more than the scene over Alex's body.

  • you got it in one there. totally agree

  • that monster is huge!!!!

and the hiroglyphs on the door to me look like its an ancient thing

  • someone translated some of those glyphs and it read something like "i summon time protection"

  • Y'know, I think there are 2 Smoke Monsters. One is on the loose, and one is just a good pet. The one Ben unleashes is the pet.

  • Did Ben also summoned the monster in order to kill the pilot of flight 815 and Mr. Eko, or was the monster acting alone by these two? I never understood anyway why the monster (or Ben) wanted Eko dead.

  • I think the monster was acting alone when it came to the pilot and Ecko but you never know.

What I want to know is why the smoke monster listens to Ben.

  • Ben Linus rocks!

  • theory: what if the smoke monster is not some sort of alien but a machine that's from the future? sorta like that show the 4400.

  • that's what i think! alien technology would be too obvious of an answer

  • i want to know what the smoke is and who jacob is lol
